Chapter 2 — The Morning After

Chapter 2 — The Morning After

The Carter house felt strangely unfamiliar the next morning.

Not because anything had changed overnight.

Because, for the first time in years, Emma saw it without convincing herself everything was fine.

Sunlight spilled across the kitchen floor.

The coffee maker hummed.

The grandfather clock ticked in the hallway.

Everything looked exactly as it had the day before.

Everything except her.

She no longer felt responsible for protecting everyone else's comfort.

Jonathan Reed arrived shortly after nine.

He placed another folder on the island.

"The petition has been filed."

Emma nodded.

She expected relief.

Instead, she felt exhaustion.

Jonathan seemed to understand.

"Freedom rarely feels exciting on the first day."

She smiled faintly.

"It feels expensive."

"In many ways," he replied, "it is."

Across town, Daniel sat alone in his corner office.

His phone had barely stopped vibrating.

Several board members wanted explanations.

His assistant canceled three meetings after clients unexpectedly postponed them.

No one mentioned the dinner directly.

They didn't have to.

People had seen enough.

Reputation wasn't destroyed by a single accusation.

It eroded when too many small memories suddenly made sense.

Daniel stared through the office windows.

He remembered every time Emma had quietly apologized after arguments.

He had accepted those apologies as proof that he was right.

Now he wondered if they had been signs that something inside her was slowly disappearing.

For the first time in years...

He wasn't certain he had been the victim of an unreasonable wife.
