Chapter 3 — Voices That Stayed Silent

Chapter 3 — Voices That Stayed Silent

A week later, Emma met several guests from the dinner for coffee.

She hadn't invited them.

They had asked to see her.

The first to arrive was Richard.

He folded his hands around his cup.

"I owe you an apology."

Emma looked surprised.

"You didn't hurt me."

"I watched it happen."

His voice cracked.

"And I told myself it wasn't my place."

One by one, others admitted the same thing.

They remembered the jokes.

The interruptions.

The subtle corrections.

The way Daniel answered questions directed at Emma.

The way she always smiled afterward.

They had mistaken survival for patience.

Margaret never came.

Vanessa didn't either.

But two days later, Emma received an unexpected letter.

It contained only three handwritten sentences.

I believed confidence always looked like strength.

I didn't realize it could also look like control.

I'm sorry I never questioned what I was seeing.

There was no signature.

There didn't need to be.

Emma quietly folded the letter and placed it inside a drawer.

Forgiveness, she realized, wasn't something she owed anyone.

But understanding had its own kind of peace.
