Chapter 4 — Learning Who She Was

Chapter 4 — Learning Who She Was

Months passed.

The divorce moved steadily through the court.

Emma rented a small apartment overlooking a neighborhood park.

There was no grand staircase.

No marble floors.

No formal dining room.

She loved every inch of it.

For the first time in years, she bought furniture without asking whether someone else would approve.

She painted one wall deep green simply because she liked it.

She laughed when the color turned out darker than expected.

No one criticized her.

No one told her she was being dramatic.

Her therapist asked one afternoon,

"What do you enjoy?"

Emma opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

She realized she had spent so many years becoming the version of herself that pleased other people...

...she had forgotten who she was before that.

So she started over.

She joined a book club.

She took weekend photography classes.

She planted herbs on the balcony.

Small things.

Ordinary things.

Each one reminded her that happiness didn't have to be earned.

Sometimes it simply had to be allowed.
