That afternoon, Jason found Vanessa crying inside the apartment he had secretly rented.
"They know."
She looked terrified.
"Your wife knows everything."
Jason rubbed his forehead.
"I can fix it."
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You said that six months ago."
"I just need time."
She handed him her phone.
"Then explain this."
A news article filled the screen.
BENNETT HOLDINGS ANNOUNCES EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING.
Jason froze.
His father had moved faster than expected.
Then Vanessa spoke the words that changed everything.
"I lied to you."
Jason looked up.
"What?"
"I'm not after your money."
"What do you mean?"
She reached into a drawer and placed a business card on the table.

Jason's face turned white.
"My brother works there."
His knees weakened.
"He asked me to keep talking."
"You set me up?"
"No."
