CHAPTER 2 – The Doctor's Report
The next morning, Olivia arrived at St. Matthew Medical Center alone.
Her appointment had been scheduled weeks earlier.
Jason never came.
He had claimed he was "too busy."
Now she knew why.
Dr. Helen Morris entered the examination room carrying two folders instead of one.
"Mrs. Bennett..."
Olivia immediately sensed something was wrong.
"Is my baby okay?"
"The baby is healthy."
She paused.
"But there was something unusual in your bloodwork."
Olivia felt her heart race.
"What is it?"
The doctor opened the file.
"We performed additional genetic screening."
Olivia looked confused.
"I already agreed to the DNA test."
"This isn't about paternity."
The doctor slid another report across the desk.
"The fetus has a rare genetic marker."
Olivia's eyes widened.
Dr. Morris continued.
"It can only come from one side of the family."
Olivia frowned.
"Jason's?"
The doctor slowly nodded.
"But that's not the surprising part."
She opened another folder.
"Two weeks ago another pregnant patient came here."
Olivia's breathing stopped.
"Vanessa Cole."
The doctor looked uncomfortable.
"She has the exact same genetic marker."
Silence.
Then...
"The probability of two unrelated fathers carrying this mutation is less than one in fifty million."
Olivia stared at her.
"What are you saying?"
The doctor answered carefully.
"I'm saying both babies almost certainly share the same biological father."
Olivia closed her eyes.
The affair was no longer suspicion.
