CHAPTER 4 — FALL OF THE KING

CHAPTER 4 — FALL OF THE KING

Two days later, Lucas appeared outside my building.

No security clearance.

No private jet arrival.

No empire behind him.

Just a man in a wrinkled suit holding nothing but desperation.

He looked up as I stepped outside.

For the first time, he didn’t look powerful.

He looked small.

“I lost everything,” he said.

I studied him quietly.

“You lost it the moment you mistook control for love.”

His jaw tightened.

“That family destroyed me too.”

I almost laughed.

“No, Lucas.”

“You helped them.”

A long silence.

Then he whispered:

“Do you hate me that much?”

That question lingered in the air.

I thought about it.

Three years of humiliation.

Three years of silence.

Three years of being reduced to something disposable.

Then I answered honestly.

“No.”

May you like

“That would still mean you matter.”

And I walked past him.
