CHAPTER 5 — THE FALL OF WHITMORE ENTERPRISES

The next few days changed everything.

The Whitmore name, once associated with luxury and influence, became a symbol of scandal.

Every newspaper.

Every business channel.

Every financial report.

They were all talking about the same thing.

Andrew Whitmore’s empire was built on hidden support from the Escalante family.

The truth that Andrew had spent years hiding was now public.

And the world wanted answers.

Inside Whitmore Enterprises, the atmosphere was completely different.

Employees who once rushed to please Andrew now avoided eye contact.

Executives who once praised every decision he made were suddenly questioning his leadership.

The boardroom that had once belonged to him no longer felt like his.

Andrew sat at the head of the table, looking at the people around him.

"I want to know exactly what is happening."

No one spoke.

Finally, his longtime financial director, Thomas, cleared his throat.

"Mr. Whitmore..."

Andrew looked at him.

"Say it."

Thomas sighed.

"The board has requested your resignation."

The words landed heavily.

Andrew stared.

"My resignation?"

Thomas nodded.

"They believe new leadership is necessary during this transition."

Andrew laughed quietly.

"Transition?"

He looked around the room.

"You mean after everything I built?"

No one answered.

Because everyone knew the truth.

The company had survived because of Mariana.

Not because of Andrew.

A younger executive finally spoke.

"Sir, the investors lost confidence after the ownership situation became public."

Andrew turned toward him.

"Investors trusted me."

The executive hesitated.

"They trusted the company."

A painful silence filled the room.

Because that was the difference.

For years, Andrew believed people followed him.

But they had followed the success Mariana created.

Not the man who took credit for it.

Meanwhile, Brenda was discovering another harsh reality.

The luxury apartment Andrew had promised her was no longer available.

The private shopping accounts were suspended.

The credit cards stopped working.

The lifestyle she had dreamed of disappeared overnight.

She sat in front of her vanity, staring at expensive jewelry scattered across the table.

A week ago, these things represented victory.

Now they felt like reminders.

She had not won.

She had attached herself to a man who never truly owned anything.

Margaret entered the room.

"We need to talk."

Brenda looked up.

"About what?"

Margaret’s expression was cold.

"About leaving."

Brenda stood.

"What?"

"You heard me."

"You blame me?"

Margaret laughed bitterly.

"Do you think Mariana did this because of you?"

Brenda said nothing.

"She did this because we all showed her who we were."

The words bothered Brenda.

Because deep down...

She knew Margaret was right.

Across town, Mariana continued rebuilding her life.

But unlike Andrew, she wasn’t celebrating his downfall.

She was working.

She attended meetings.

Reviewed investments.

Met with executives.

Made decisions.

The same work she had done quietly for years.

Only now...

People finally listened.

At lunch, her assistant, Clara, placed a file on the table.

"These are the final reports from Whitmore Enterprises."

Mariana opened it.

"How bad?"

Clara hesitated.

"Worse than expected."

Mariana read through the numbers.

Years of poor decisions.

Unnecessary spending.

Failed investments.

Hidden debts.

Andrew had not only been arrogant.

He had been careless.

"He was trying to maintain an image," Clara said.

Mariana closed the file.

"I know."

"He cared more about appearing successful than actually being responsible."

That evening, Mariana received an unexpected visitor.

Andrew.

Her security team informed her immediately.

"Do you want me to send him away?"

Mariana looked toward the window.

After a moment, she shook her head.

"No."

Andrew entered the office.

But this time, he was different.

No expensive confidence.

No arrogant smile.

Just a tired man.

"I need to talk."

Mariana gestured toward the chair.

"Sit."

He did.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Finally, Andrew said:

"I lost everything."

Mariana remained silent.

"I lost my company."

"My reputation."

"My position."

He looked at her.

"But that’s not what hurts the most."

She waited.

"I lost the one person who was actually on my side."

Mariana looked away.

Because a part of her still remembered the man she married.

Not the man who betrayed her.

The man from before.

"I should have protected you."

Andrew’s voice cracked.

"I should have believed you."

"You should have respected me."

Her answer was quiet.

He nodded.

"I know."

A long silence followed.

Then Andrew asked:

"Is there any way to fix this?"

Mariana looked at him.

"Fix what?"

"Our marriage."

The question hung in the air.

Once, that question would have broken her.

Now...

It only reminded her how much had changed.

"You are asking because you lost everything."

"No."

His answer came quickly.

"I’m asking because I finally understand what I had."

Mariana studied him.

For the first time, she saw regret.

Real regret.

But regret did not erase pain.

"I need time."

Andrew nodded slowly.

"I understand."

He stood.

Before leaving, he turned back.

"Mariana."

She looked at him.

"I hope one day you believe that I’m sorry."

Then he walked away.

Mariana watched the door close.

She wanted to hate him.

It would have been easier.

But healing was not about hatred.

It was about accepting the truth.

Andrew had lost his empire.

But she had lost something too.

The future she once imagined.

And some things...

Even money could never buy back.
