CHAPTER 11 — THE ENEMY BEHIND THE SHADOWS

The investigation continued for days.

But the deeper Mariana’s team looked, the more complicated the truth became.

At first, everyone believed Brenda was the mastermind.

She had manipulated Andrew.

She had entered the marriage.

She had collected information.

She had planned her rise.

But the evidence showed something else.

Brenda was not the person controlling the game.

She was a piece on the board.

Not the player.

Mariana sat in the private conference room at Escalante headquarters, surrounded by lawyers and investigators.

A large screen displayed financial records, company structures, and hidden transactions.

Clara stood beside her.

"We traced the overseas company."

Mariana looked at the screen.

"And?"

"It leads to a private investment group."

"Name?"

Clara hesitated.

"Blackwell Capital."

The room became quiet.

Mariana recognized the name.

Everyone in the business world knew it.

A powerful investment firm known for aggressive acquisitions.

They specialized in buying struggling companies, restructuring them, and controlling the market.

"They were behind Whitmore?"

The lead investigator nodded.

"Most likely."

Mariana leaned back.

"But why?"

The investigator changed the screen.

A timeline appeared.

"Because Whitmore Enterprises owned something they wanted."

Mariana studied the information.

A property.

A technology division.

And a series of patents.

Things Andrew never even knew were valuable.

"He wasn’t being targeted because of his company."

Clara realized.

"He was being targeted because of what was hidden inside it."

Mariana nodded.

"And Brenda was sent to create the perfect collapse."

The pieces finally connected.

Brenda gained Andrew’s trust.

She encouraged him to distance himself from Mariana.

She convinced him that his wife was a burden.

Then, when the company became unstable...

Blackwell Capital would step in and buy everything for a fraction of its value.

A perfect plan.

Except they made one mistake.

They underestimated Mariana.

Meanwhile, Andrew was struggling with a different battle.

His reputation had fallen.

His friends had disappeared.

People who once surrounded him were suddenly nowhere to be found.

But he accepted it.

Because he finally understood something important.

A person’s true character was revealed when everything was taken away.

And for years...

He had been the wrong kind of man.

One evening, Andrew received a message.

Not from Mariana.

Not from Thomas.

From Brenda.

We need to talk. It’s urgent.

He almost ignored it.

But something told him he needed to know what she was planning.

They met at a quiet restaurant.

Brenda arrived nervous.

That alone surprised him.

She was usually confident.

Controlled.

Now she looked afraid.

"You know, don’t you?"

Andrew looked at her.

"Know what?"

Her eyes moved around the room.

"That I wasn’t alone."

Andrew remained silent.

"Someone hired me."

The words confirmed what he already suspected.

"Who?"

Brenda hesitated.

"I don’t know everything."

"Who?"

Her voice became quieter.

"Blackwell Capital."

Andrew’s expression changed.

"Why are you telling me?"

She looked down.

"Because they’re going to destroy Mariana."

Andrew studied her.

"Why do you care?"

For the first time, Brenda looked ashamed.

"I don’t."

A pause.

"Not enough."

Andrew said nothing.

"I wanted her life."

Brenda admitted.

"I wanted everything she had."

"But I never expected..."

She stopped.

"Expected what?"

"That she would be the only person who actually deserved it."

Andrew looked away.

It was the first honest thing Brenda had ever said.

"Do you have proof?"

She nodded.

"I have copies of the instructions they gave me."

Andrew stood.

"Give them to Mariana."

Brenda looked surprised.

"You trust her?"

"No."

He looked at her.

"I trust the truth."

The next morning, Brenda walked into Escalante Tower.

Every security guard recognized her.

Every employee knew her history.

But Mariana allowed her inside.

When Brenda entered the office, neither woman spoke for several seconds.

Finally, Brenda said:

"I owe you an apology."

Mariana remained silent.

"I know those words don’t fix anything."

"No."

"They don’t."

Brenda nodded.

"I was jealous of you."

Mariana looked at her.

"I hated that people respected you without you trying."

"I hated that Andrew loved you."

A pause.

"But the truth is..."

"I wanted something that was never mine."

She placed a folder on the desk.

"This is everything."

Mariana opened it.

Inside were emails.

Contracts.

Messages.

Proof of Blackwell Capital’s plan.

She looked up.

"Why?"

Brenda swallowed.

"Because I finally realized something."

"What?"

"I spent months trying to become you."

Her voice cracked.

"But I never understood that being you meant having the courage to walk away."

For the first time, Mariana saw regret.

Real regret.

She closed the folder.

"This doesn’t erase what you did."

"I know."

"But it may stop something worse."

Brenda nodded.

As she left, Mariana looked at the evidence.

The battle had changed.

Andrew’s betrayal had hurt her.

Brenda’s manipulation had damaged her life.

But Blackwell Capital had tried to destroy everything her family built.

And that was something Mariana could not ignore.

She picked up her phone.

Called her legal team.

"Prepare everything."

A pause.

"Tomorrow morning, we make our move."

Because this time...

She wasn’t fighting for a marriage.

May you like

She wasn’t fighting for revenge.

She was fighting for the truth.
