CHAPTER 1 — THE MORNING THE EMPIRE COLLAPSED

The first thing Andrew noticed the next morning was the silence.
Not the peaceful kind.
The kind that felt like a warning.
He walked through the mansion expecting the usual routine.
Servants preparing breakfast.
Assistants waiting for instructions.
Executives calling with updates.
Everything should have been exactly the same.
After all, Mariana was gone.
The woman he had spent years underestimating had finally walked away.
And in Andrew’s mind, that meant he had won.
He adjusted his cufflinks and smiled at his reflection.
"She’ll come back," he told himself.
"They always do."
Brenda entered the room wearing a silk robe, carrying a cup of coffee.
For the first time, she walked through the mansion like she already owned it.
"Good morning," she said softly.
Andrew looked at her and smiled.
"Good morning."
She glanced around the room, admiring the expensive furniture, the paintings, the luxury surrounding them.
"I still can’t believe this will finally be our life."
Andrew wrapped an arm around her.
"It already is."
Neither of them noticed Margaret standing near the staircase.
Her expression was calm.
But something about her face looked uneasy.
"Andrew," she said.
He turned.
"What?"
"The bank called."
He frowned.
"What about?"
Margaret hesitated.
"They said there was an issue with several accounts."
Andrew laughed.
"An issue?"
"Probably some paperwork mistake."
He picked up his phone and called his financial manager.
The call connected immediately.
But the voice on the other end was different.
"Mr. Whitmore."
Andrew froze.
"Why does your tone sound like that?"
There was a pause.
"Sir, we need you to come to the office immediately."
"Why?"
Another silence.
"Because your access has been restricted."
Andrew stopped smiling.
"What did you say?"
"Your accounts have been temporarily frozen."
The room became completely silent.
Brenda looked confused.
Margaret stepped closer.
"Frozen?"
Andrew tightened his grip on the phone.
"Who authorized this?"
The answer came slowly.
"The Escalante legal team."
The color drained from his face.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then he laughed.
A nervous, disbelieving laugh.
"That’s impossible."
The financial manager remained silent.
"Andrew..."
"No."
His voice became sharper.
"That’s impossible."
He ended the call and immediately dialed another number.
His company president.
No answer.
His chief financial officer.
No answer.
His attorney.
No answer.
Every call ended the same way.
Unavailable.
Restricted.
Pending review.
Brenda stepped closer.
"What’s happening?"
Andrew looked at her.
For the first time, she saw fear in his eyes.
"I don’t know."
But deep down...
He knew.
Because there was only one person who had the authority to do this.
The woman he had slapped.
The woman he had ordered to kneel.
The woman he believed had nothing.
Margaret slowly sat down.
Her confidence was gone.
"Andrew..."
He looked at her.
"What?"
Her voice was quieter.
"What if she was telling the truth?"
Andrew stared at her.
"No."
But the memory returned.
Mariana standing in that doorway.
Calm.
Unshaken.
Almost pitying him.
"This mansion..."
"The cars."
"The company."
"The investments."
"They all exist because of me."
At the time, he thought she was desperate.
Now...
He wondered if she had been warning him.
A notification appeared on his phone.
An official announcement.
The Escalante International Group had issued a statement.
Andrew opened it.
His hands began to shake.
The headline was simple.
But it destroyed everything he believed.
"Mariana Escalante Assumes Full Control of All Family-Owned Assets Effective Immediately."
Below it was a photograph.
Mariana.
Standing beside her father.
Confident.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
The woman they had humiliated the night before...
Was not a powerless wife.
She was the owner of the empire they had spent years pretending belonged to them.
Andrew slowly lowered the phone.
Brenda whispered:
"Who... is she?"
And for the first time in four years...
Andrew finally understood.
May you like
He had not thrown away a woman who needed him.
He had betrayed the woman who never needed him at all.
