CHAPTER 4 — THE PRICE OF ARROGANCE

Andrew left Escalante Tower without saying another word.

For the first time in years, he didn’t have a clever response.

No excuse.

No explanation.

No way to twist the situation in his favor.

The elevator doors closed in front of him, and his reflection appeared on the polished metal.

He barely recognized himself.

A man who had spent years believing he was powerful.

A man who had confused wealth with worth.

A man who had destroyed the only person who had ever truly stood beside him.

Outside the building, reporters gathered near the entrance.

The moment they saw him, cameras turned.

"Mr. Whitmore!"

"Is it true that Escalante International now controls Whitmore Enterprises?"

"Did Mariana Escalante secretly fund your company?"

"Are you stepping down as CEO?"

The questions came one after another.

Andrew lowered his head and pushed through the crowd.

For years, he had loved attention.

He loved seeing his name on magazine covers.

He loved walking into rooms and watching people recognize him.

But today...

His name felt like a burden.

When he arrived back at the mansion, Brenda was waiting.

She immediately stood up.

"Well?"

Andrew walked past her.

"She owns everything."

Brenda froze.

"What?"

"The company."

"The investments."

"The properties."

"Everything."

Her face changed.

"No."

Andrew looked at her.

"Yes."

She shook her head.

"But you built that company."

The words hit him harder than she expected.

Because he used to believe them too.

"I thought I did."

Brenda stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

Andrew didn’t answer.

Because the truth was painful.

He hadn’t built anything alone.

Mariana had been the foundation.

And he had spent years standing on top of it while pretending he was the one holding everything together.

Margaret entered the room.

She looked nervous.

"Andrew."

He turned.

"What now?"

She held a letter.

"This came for me."

He took it.

The envelope carried the Escalante logo.

Inside was a simple message.

Mrs. Margaret Whitmore,

Your access to all family-funded accounts and properties has been suspended pending review.

Andrew looked at her.

"You too?"

Margaret’s face turned pale.

"She’s punishing us."

"No."

Andrew folded the letter.

"She’s showing us reality."

Margaret stared at him.

The arrogance she once carried was gone.

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

"I never thought..."

She stopped.

Andrew looked at her.

"You never thought what?"

Margaret lowered her eyes.

"That she was someone important."

A bitter smile appeared on Andrew’s face.

"Neither did I."

Across the city, Mariana sat in her father’s office.

Alejandro watched her quietly.

"You’re handling this differently than I expected."

She looked up.

"How?"

"I expected anger."

Mariana looked at the city outside.

"I was angry."

"Four years ago, I was."

"Four years ago, I wanted them to feel the pain they caused me."

She paused.

"But anger disappears."

"What remains?"

Mariana looked at the documents on the desk.

"The truth."

Alejandro nodded.

"You know you could destroy him completely."

She was silent.

"Yes."

"But I won’t."

Her father studied her.

"Why?"

"Because Andrew’s biggest punishment is not losing money."

She looked down.

"It’s knowing that the woman he considered worthless was the person who gave him everything."

That evening, Andrew received another message.

This time from Mariana directly.

Meet me tomorrow at the charity foundation office. Alone.

He stared at the message.

Part of him wanted to refuse.

His pride told him not to go.

But another part of him knew he needed answers.

The next morning, he arrived at the foundation building.

A place he remembered.

A place where Mariana had spent countless hours organizing events.

At the time, he barely noticed.

Now he saw her name everywhere.

The foundation wasn’t built by his family.

It wasn’t built by his company.

It was created by Mariana.

He entered the conference room.

She was already there.

No lawyers.

No executives.

Just her.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Andrew finally said:

"Why did you invite me?"

Mariana looked at him.

"Because there is something you need to know."

He sat down.

"What?"

She placed an old photograph on the table.

It was from their wedding day.

Andrew looked at it.

Both of them were smiling.

Happy.

In love.

"I remember that day," he whispered.

Mariana nodded.

"I do too."

Silence followed.

Then she said:

"I didn't leave because you hurt my pride."

Andrew looked at her.

"I left because you destroyed my trust."

Those words affected him more than any accusation.

Because he knew they were true.

"I loved you, Andrew."

Her voice remained calm.

"But you loved what I provided."

He looked away.

"No..."

"Yes."

She continued.

"You loved the lifestyle."

"The status."

"The respect."

"But you never cared to know the woman who made it possible."

Andrew had no answer.

For the first time...

He wanted to apologize.

Not because he was losing everything.

Not because he was afraid.

But because he finally understood what he had lost.

"I’m sorry."

The words came quietly.

Mariana looked at him.

A long silence passed.

Then she said:

"I believe you are."

Andrew looked surprised.

"But forgiveness..."

She stood.

"...is something you earn."

He lowered his eyes.

"How?"

Mariana walked toward the door.

"By becoming the person you should have been four years ago."

She stopped.

"And by accepting that I may never come back."

The door closed behind her.

Andrew remained alone.

May you like

Holding the photograph of the woman he once had...

And the realization that he had lost her long before she ever walked away.
