Chapter 9 — The Enemy Behind the Curtain

Chapter 9 — The Enemy Behind the Curtain
Andrew arrived at Escalante Global headquarters exactly on time.
That alone surprised Mariana.
For years, Andrew had made people wait for him.
Meetings started when he entered.
Schedules changed around him.
People adjusted their lives to fit his.

But today, he arrived early.
No assistants.
No demands.
No arrogance.
Just Andrew.
Mariana noticed.
But she said nothing.
"Thank you for coming."
Andrew nodded.
"Thank you for asking me."
The simple exchange felt strange.
Because they were no longer speaking as husband and wife.
They were two people connected by a complicated history.
Mariana led him into a private conference room.
Daniel was already there.
Several documents covered the table.
Andrew looked at them.
"What is this?"
Mariana sat down.
"Something I discovered while reviewing the original Whitmore files."
Andrew frowned.
"I thought everything had already been investigated."
"It was."
She looked at Daniel.
"But someone made sure certain information was overlooked."
Daniel opened a folder.
Inside were old financial reports.
Andrew scanned the pages.
Then stopped.
"What am I looking at?"
Daniel answered:
"The first major investment into Whitmore International."
Andrew shook his head.
"That was from Escalante Group."
"No."
Daniel pushed another document forward.
"That is what everyone believed."
Andrew looked confused.
"Then who was it?"
Mariana's expression became serious.
"The money came through a third-party company."
Andrew looked at the name.
His face changed.
Because he recognized it.
"Blackridge Holdings."
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly."
Andrew leaned back.
"That company disappeared years ago."
"Officially."
Mariana looked at him.
"But not really."
Daniel explained.
"Blackridge Holdings was created as a private investment vehicle."
"Someone used it to move money into Whitmore International."
Andrew stared at the documents.
"Why?"
Mariana answered:
"To control the company without appearing to own it."
A cold feeling moved through him.
"Who?"
Nobody spoke for a moment.
Then Daniel placed one final document on the table.
A signature.
Andrew recognized it immediately.
His eyes widened.
"No."
Mariana watched him carefully.
"Andrew."
He looked up.
"That can't be possible."
The signature belonged to someone close.
Someone who had been around since the beginning.
Someone who had always acted like a supporter.
Someone who had always claimed to protect the Whitmore family.
Richard Hale.
Andrew's former business partner.
His friend.
The man who stood beside him during every major company announcement.
The man who disappeared the moment Andrew lost power.
"Richard?"
Andrew couldn't believe it.
Daniel nodded.
"The evidence suggests Richard created Blackridge Holdings to secretly influence Whitmore International."
"But why?"
Mariana answered:
"Because he never wanted you to succeed."
Andrew looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
She opened another file.
Inside were reports of internal conflicts.
Investment disputes.
Hidden transactions.
Emails.
"Richard wasn't helping you build an empire."
"He was slowly positioning himself to take it."
Andrew felt sick.
Every memory changed again.
Every conversation.
Every handshake.
Every moment Richard told him:
"We're brothers."
It had all been an act.
"Why didn't we find this before?"
Andrew asked.
Daniel sighed.
"Because Richard was careful."
"He created layers of protection."
"He made sure the money trail always ended before reaching him."
Mariana added:
"And because everyone was looking at the wrong person."
Andrew looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
"You."
The answer was direct.
Andrew understood.
Richard had benefited from Andrew's arrogance.
His obsession with being admired.
His belief that he was the smartest person in the room.
While Andrew was busy protecting his image...
Someone else was planning to take everything.
That evening, Andrew confronted Richard.
Not with anger.
Not with accusations.
With evidence.
They met at a private club where they used to celebrate business victories.
The same place where Richard once raised a glass and said:
"To the greatest company in the country."
Now they sat across from each other in silence.
Richard smiled.
"Andrew."
Andrew placed the documents on the table.
Richard's expression changed slightly.
Only slightly.
But Andrew noticed.
"You know what these are."
Richard leaned back.
"Old paperwork."
"No."
Andrew looked directly at him.
"The truth."
Richard sighed.
"I was wondering when you would figure it out."
The calm response shocked Andrew.
"You don't even deny it?"
Richard smiled.
"Why would I?"
A pause.
"You already lost everything."
Andrew stared at him.
"Was that the plan?"
Richard shrugged.
"The plan was always simple."
"Build your company."
"Let everyone believe you were the genius."
"Then take control when the timing was right."
Andrew felt anger rising.
"Why?"
Richard laughed quietly.
"Because people like you always make the same mistake."
"What mistake?"
"You think people admire you."
Richard leaned forward.
"They admire what you have."
The words sounded familiar.
Because Brenda had proven the same thing.
But hearing it from Richard was different.
This was betrayal from someone he trusted.
"You used me."
Richard smiled.
"No."
"I studied you."
Andrew's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
"You were perfect."
"You wanted attention."
"You wanted everyone to believe you were self-made."
"You never checked the details because you loved the story too much."
Richard stood.
"And Mariana?"
Andrew's expression changed.
Richard laughed.
"She was the only person who saw everything."
A pause.
"That was your biggest mistake."
"You should have listened to her."
Richard walked away.
But Andrew didn't move.
Because the truth was painful.
Richard had betrayed him.
But Richard had also revealed something Andrew needed to hear.
The person who always protected him...
Was the person he pushed away.
That night, Andrew met Mariana again.
She was standing outside her office when he arrived.
"He admitted it."
Mariana nodded.
"I expected he would."
Andrew looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"Would you have believed me?"
The question stopped him.
Because he knew the answer.
No.
Four years ago, he would have defended Richard.
He would have accused Mariana of jealousy.
He would have chosen his pride.
Andrew looked down.
"No."
Mariana's expression softened slightly.
"That's why I waited."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Andrew said:
"I'm sorry."
Mariana looked at him.
"Not for the company."
"Not for the money."
He took a breath.
"For not believing you."
That was the apology she had been waiting for.
Not because it fixed anything.
But because it finally showed understanding.
Before Andrew left, Mariana stopped him.
"Andrew."
He turned.
"Richard is not finished."
Andrew frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel stepped forward.
"We found evidence that he moved more than money."
"He moved information."
Andrew's face became serious.
"What information?"
Mariana looked at him.
"Information that could damage both of our families."
A silence followed.
Because Andrew realized something.
The battle was never just about his empire.
It was about uncovering the person who had been manipulating everything from the shadows.

And now...
The real enemy had finally revealed himself.
