Chapter 18 — The Father’s Final Secret

Chapter 18 — The Father’s Final Secret

The room became completely silent.

Andrew stared at the document in his hands.

The name written on the page felt impossible.

His father.

The man he had admired.

The man who had taught him everything about business.

The man whose memory had guided every decision Andrew made.

Connected to the greatest secret his family had ever hidden.

"No."

Andrew shook his head slowly.

"This can't be true."

Alexander watched him carefully.

"I knew you would say that."

Andrew looked at him.

"Because you don't understand."

His voice became emotional.

"My father was the most honest man I knew."

Alexander didn't argue.

Instead, he walked toward the old archive shelf.

"That is why this will be difficult for you."

He pulled out another folder.

"Because the truth is rarely simple."

Mariana stood beside Andrew.

Not as his wife.

Not as someone trying to fix him.

But as someone who understood what it felt like to discover the people you trusted were not who you believed.

"Andrew."

He looked at her.

"Everyone I trusted lied to me."

Her expression softened.

"Not everyone."

A pause.

"Some people made mistakes."

Andrew looked down.

"How do you know the difference?"

Mariana answered quietly:

"Because mistakes come from fear."

"But betrayal comes from selfishness."

Alexander opened the folder.

Inside were letters written by Andrew's father.

The first one was dated twenty-five years earlier.

Andrew recognized the handwriting immediately.

His hands trembled as he picked it up.

"Alexander,

I know you believe I betrayed the family.

But you don't understand what I discovered."

Andrew continued reading.

"The original agreement was never only about wealth."

"There was another condition hidden by previous generations."

"A condition that could destroy everything if the wrong person found it."

Andrew looked up.

"What condition?"

Alexander remained silent.

Daniel stepped closer.

Andrew continued.

"The fortune cannot belong to someone who seeks power over people."

"If such a person gains control, the entire legacy must be dissolved."

Mariana understood first.

"This wasn't about inheritance."

Alexander nodded.

"Correct."

"It was protection."

Andrew looked confused.

"But why hide this?"

Alexander answered:

"Because your father discovered someone was trying to manipulate the legacy."

"Who?"

Alexander looked at him.

"Someone inside the family."

A cold feeling entered the room.

Andrew looked at the documents again.

His father hadn't been hiding the truth to steal power.

He had been hiding it to protect everyone.

"Then why did you let everyone believe he was the problem?" Andrew asked Alexander.

For the first time...

Alexander looked ashamed.

"Because I was angry."

The answer surprised everyone.

"I spent years believing your father chose control over family."

A pause.

"But I was wrong."

He looked at the old letters.

"Your father was trying to prevent the same mistake I made."

The truth became clearer.

Alexander wasn't the hero.

Andrew's father wasn't the villain.

They were all people who made decisions based on fear.

And those decisions created generations of confusion.

But one question remained.

"Who was trying to manipulate the legacy?" Mariana asked.

Alexander looked toward the final document.

"The answer is here."

He opened the last page.

A list of names.

People who had accessed the hidden information.

Andrew scanned the list.

Then stopped.

Because one name appeared again and again.

A name he knew.

A name he never expected.

Margaret Whitmore.

Andrew froze.

"My mother?"

Alexander nodded.

"She knew."

Mariana looked shocked.

"How?"

"Your father told her."

Andrew stepped back.

"No."

His voice became quiet.

"She knew about all of this?"

Alexander nodded.

"She knew about the agreement."

"The hidden trust."

"The family connection."

"Everything."

Andrew felt betrayed all over again.

His mother.

The woman who constantly criticized Mariana.

The woman who believed family status mattered above everything.

She knew the truth...

And still chose pride.

That night, Andrew confronted Margaret.

She was sitting quietly when he entered.

One look at his face told her.

She knew.

"You found out."

Andrew stopped.

"You knew."

Margaret looked away.

"Yes."

The simple answer hurt more than any excuse.

"Why?"

She remained silent.

"Why did you let me believe I built everything alone?"

Margaret's eyes filled with regret.

"Because I wanted you to be strong."

Andrew laughed bitterly.

"No."

"You wanted me to be powerful."

A pause.

"And you confused the two."

Margaret finally broke.

"I was wrong."

Andrew looked at her.

"I spent my whole life believing our family name was everything."

Her voice shook.

"I was afraid of losing it."

Andrew answered:

"So you sacrificed the people who actually protected it."

She closed her eyes.

Because she knew he was right.

But then Margaret revealed something even more shocking.

"There is something else you need to know."

Andrew looked at her.

"What?"

She hesitated.

"Your father didn't die naturally."

The room went still.

Andrew's face changed.

"What?"

Margaret looked terrified.

"Before he died, he discovered who was trying to take control."

"Someone found out."

"And they made sure he couldn't reveal the truth."

Andrew felt cold.

"Who?"

Margaret looked toward the window.

"I don't know."

"But your father left one final message."

"Where?"

Margaret whispered:

"With the person he trusted most."

Andrew immediately understood.

"Who?"

Margaret looked at him.

"Mariana's father."

The revelation changed everything.

Because the truth about Andrew's father was not finished.

And somewhere hidden inside the Escalante family...

Was the final piece of the mystery.

The next morning, Mariana received an unexpected call.

The voice on the other end was old.

Tired.

But familiar.

Her father.

"Mariana."

She stood immediately.

"Dad?"

His voice became serious.

"You finally found the truth."

She froze.

"What truth?"

A pause.

"The truth your family and Andrew's family have been protecting for decades."

Mariana's heart raced.

"What are you talking about?"

Her father's final words shocked her.

"Your mother didn't die in an accident."

Silence.

"She was investigating the same person who destroyed Andrew's father."

Mariana dropped the phone.

Because the mystery was no longer about money.

Or companies.

Or inheritance.

It was about a hidden enemy who had been waiting for decades.

May you like

And now...

That enemy knew they were getting close.
