Chapter 12 — The Price of the Truth

Chapter 12 — The Price of the Truth

The next morning, the entire business world woke up to another storm.

The headlines were everywhere.

"Mariana Escalante Accused of Secretly Controlling Whitmore Empire."

"Was Andrew Whitmore Just a Puppet?"

"The Woman Behind the Fortune Faces New Allegations."

The same media outlets that praised Mariana days earlier were now questioning her.

And Richard Hale was watching every second.

Because this was his strategy.

Not to defeat Mariana with facts.

But to make people doubt her.

Inside Escalante Global, the atmosphere was tense.

Executives moved quickly.

Lawyers reviewed documents.

Communication teams prepared responses.

But Mariana remained calm.

Daniel noticed.

"You are not worried."

She looked up from her desk.

"I am."

He seemed surprised.

"You don't look like it."

Mariana closed the file in front of her.

"Fear and panic are different things."

A pause.

"Fear helps you think."

"Panic makes you careless."

Daniel nodded.

That was always what separated Mariana from everyone else.

She didn't react.

She calculated.

Andrew arrived at the headquarters shortly after.

Several employees looked surprised to see him.

Months ago, he would have walked in expecting everyone to move aside.

Today, he waited at the front desk.

"I need to see Mariana."

The receptionist looked at him.

"Do you have an appointment?"

Andrew almost smiled.

A few months earlier, he would have been offended.

Now he simply answered:

"No."

"But I understand if she is busy."

The receptionist noticed the difference.

This wasn't the same Andrew Whitmore.

When Mariana saw him, she immediately knew something was wrong.

"What happened?"

Andrew placed his phone on the desk.

"The news."

She nodded.

"I saw it."

"They're trying to make you look like the villain."

Mariana looked at him.

"And?"

Andrew frowned.

"And we need to fight back."

She studied him.

"We?"

He paused.

Then nodded.

"Yes."

For the first time in years...

He wasn't saying "my company."

"My reputation."

"My problem."

He was saying "we."

Daniel entered with new evidence.

"We found the source."

Mariana turned.

"Richard?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"Someone working inside Escalante Global."

Everyone became silent.

Andrew looked concerned.

"Someone close to you?"

Daniel nodded.

"Very close."

He placed a file on the table.

Mariana opened it.

Her expression changed.

Because the name inside surprised her.

Elena Vargas.

Mariana's longtime financial advisor.

Someone who had worked with the Escalante family for over ten years.

Someone she trusted.

Andrew looked at her.

"Do you believe it?"

Mariana stared at the document.

"No."

Daniel looked surprised.

"No?"

"Not without proof."

Andrew noticed.

Even now...

She refused to accuse someone without evidence.

That was the difference between her and Richard.

They investigated Elena's records.

At first, nothing appeared unusual.

Her work history was perfect.

Her reputation was flawless.

But Daniel discovered something hidden.

A series of encrypted payments.

Small amounts.

Sent over several years.

Andrew looked at the records.

"Richard?"

Daniel nodded.

"Most likely."

Mariana leaned back.

"He's been building this network for a long time."

Meanwhile, Richard met Elena in a private location.

She looked nervous.

"I don't like where this is going."

Richard smiled.

"You are nervous because you are finally close to success."

Elena shook her head.

"I helped you because you promised protection."

"And you will have it."

"What happens when Mariana finds out?"

Richard laughed.

"She won't."

Elena looked uncertain.

"She's smarter than you think."

Richard's expression darkened.

"I know exactly how smart she is."

A pause.

"That's why she had to lose everything."

That evening, Andrew and Mariana reviewed old company records together.

For hours, they worked side by side.

Something strange happened.

It felt familiar.

Like the early days.

Before the betrayal.

Before the anger.

Before they became enemies.

At one point, Andrew noticed Mariana rubbing her eyes.

"You haven't slept."

She looked up.

"I have work."

"That's not an answer."

A small smile appeared on her face.

"Since when did you start caring about my health?"

Andrew looked down.

"Since I realized I should have cared all along."

The smile disappeared.

But she didn't look away.

Late that night, they discovered something important.

A missing transaction.

One that connected Richard directly to the false accusations.

Daniel looked at the evidence.

"This is enough to expose him."

Andrew nodded.

"Then release it."

Mariana remained silent.

Andrew noticed.

"What?"

She looked at the document.

"Something feels wrong."

"What do you mean?"

"Richard is too careful."

Daniel agreed.

"He wouldn't leave evidence this obvious."

Andrew looked confused.

"Then why would he?"

Mariana stared at the screen.

"Because this is not the real attack."

A cold silence filled the room.

Minutes later, another alert appeared.

This time, it wasn't about Mariana.

It was about Andrew.

A new document had been leaked.

A document that appeared to show Andrew approving illegal financial decisions.

Andrew's face went pale.

"No."

Daniel immediately checked the source.

"This is fabricated."

"But it looks real."

Mariana studied the document carefully.

Then she noticed something.

A signature.

A digital authorization.

Andrew's signature.

But not his handwriting.

"Someone copied it."

Andrew looked at her.

"Can they do that?"

"Yes."

She pointed to the file.

"If they had access to your old documents."

Andrew froze.

"Richard."

The situation became clear.

Richard wasn't trying to destroy Mariana.

He wasn't trying to destroy Andrew.

He was trying to destroy both of them at the same time.

Create chaos.

Make them fight each other.

Then take advantage of the confusion.

That night, Andrew stayed at the office.

Mariana noticed.

"You should go home."

He shook his head.

"I don't want to."

"Why?"

He looked at her.

"Because every time I left before..."

"I trusted the wrong people."

Silence.

Mariana looked away.

Andrew continued:

"This time, I want to be someone people can trust."

For the first time in months...

Mariana saw something different in him.

Not the arrogant businessman.

Not the man who hurt her.

A man trying to repair what he broke.

But before either of them could say anything...

Daniel received an urgent call.

His expression changed.

"What happened?"

He ended the call.

Then looked at them.

"We have a problem."

Mariana stood.

"What kind of problem?"

Daniel answered:

"Richard is leaving the country."

Andrew's expression changed.

"Already?"

Daniel nodded.

"But that's not the worst part."

A pause.

"He took something with him."

Mariana's face became serious.

"What?"

Daniel looked at the documents.

"The original Whitmore family trust agreement."

Everything stopped.

Because without that document...

Richard could claim control over the hidden inheritance.

The one thing he had wanted from the beginning.

Andrew looked at Mariana.

"What do we do?"

She picked up her coat.

For the first time...

There was anger in her eyes.

Not revenge.

Determination.

"We stop him."

Richard Hale thought he had won.

He believed he had outsmarted everyone.

But he made one mistake.

He underestimated the one thing he could never control.

The people he betrayed had finally stopped fighting each other.

May you like

And now...

They were fighting him.
