Chapter 3 — The Truth Behind the Empire

Chapter 3 — The Truth Behind the Empire

The headline appeared at exactly 7:00 a.m.

And within minutes, it was everywhere.

"The Hidden Investor Behind Whitmore International Revealed: Mariana Escalante's Secret Role in Building the Empire."

Andrew Whitmore stared at the television screen in disbelief.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't even breathe.

The woman standing on the screen was not the woman he remembered from the night before.

She wasn't the wife he slapped.

She wasn't the woman he ordered to kneel.

She wasn't the person he accused of stealing.

She was someone else.

Someone powerful.

Someone the entire business world respected.

The news anchor continued.

"Mariana Escalante, daughter of the renowned Escalante family, has been revealed as the primary financial architect behind several major expansions of Whitmore International over the past four years."

Andrew's fingers tightened around the remote.

"No..."

The word escaped his lips.

"No, this can't be right."

Across the room, Brenda watched the report with a pale expression.

The confidence she had carried for months was gone.

"Andrew..."

He ignored her.

The screen showed documents.

Investment agreements.

Partnership contracts.

Financial records.

Every piece of evidence proving the same thing.

Mariana had not entered his life looking for wealth.

She had entered his life already owning it.

Margaret walked into the room moments later.

She stopped when she saw the television.

Her face changed instantly.

"You need to turn that off."

Andrew slowly looked at her.

"You knew."

Margaret remained silent.

"You knew all along."

Her jaw tightened.

"Andrew..."

"No."

His voice was cold.

"You knew exactly who she was."

Margaret looked away.

"I knew she came from a powerful family."

Andrew laughed bitterly.

"A powerful family?"

He pointed at the screen.

"She was the reason I had a company!"

Margaret's expression hardened.

"And?"

Andrew stared at her.

The answer shocked him.

Because she still didn't understand.

She still believed Mariana was beneath them.

"How can you say that?"

Margaret crossed her arms.

"Because money doesn't change where someone comes from."

Andrew looked at his mother as if he had never truly seen her before.

Four years.

Four years of listening to her insult Mariana.

Four years of allowing her to make his wife feel unwanted.

And all that time...

His mother knew Mariana was the person keeping them alive.

At Escalante Global headquarters, Mariana watched the news without emotion.

The executives around her were celebrating.

The stock analysts were praising her strategy.

The business world was finally recognizing what had been hidden.

But Mariana wasn't celebrating.

She was remembering.

She remembered the first time she met Andrew.

He wasn't rich.

He wasn't powerful.

He was ambitious.

Driven.

Kind.

At least, she thought he was.

He had sat across from her in a small coffee shop and told her:

"I don't want someone to save me."

"I want someone to believe in me."

Those words had touched her.

Because Mariana never wanted to control him.

She wanted to build something with him.

So she helped him.

Quietly.

Behind the scenes.

She introduced him to investors.

She negotiated contracts.

She solved problems he didn't even know existed.

And she never asked for recognition.

Because she loved him.

Until he forgot the difference between support and ownership.

Daniel entered the office.

"Mrs. Escalante."

Mariana looked up.

"Yes?"

"We have received several requests from the media."

She shook her head.

"No interviews."

Daniel nodded.

"And the Whitmore board?"

"Proceed with the restructuring."

He paused.

"Even if Andrew loses control completely?"

Mariana looked at him.

"Andrew had four years to value what he had."

A moment of silence.

"He chose not to."

Meanwhile, Andrew arrived at Whitmore International headquarters.

But this time...

Something was different.

The employees were no longer afraid.

They were watching him.

He entered the executive floor and immediately noticed several board members waiting.

"Andrew."

He looked at them.

"What is this?"

One of the board members placed a folder on the table.

"We need to discuss your position."

Andrew's expression changed.

"My position?"

The man nodded.

"Due to the recent discoveries regarding company ownership and financial structure, the board has voted to temporarily suspend your executive authority."

Andrew stared at them.

"You can't do this."

The board member remained calm.

"Actually, we can."

Andrew looked around the room.

These were the same people who once followed him.

The same people who praised him.

The same people who called him a genius.

Now they wouldn't even meet his eyes.

"Who made this decision?"

Nobody answered.

But Andrew already knew.

Mariana.

That afternoon, Brenda tried to contact Mariana.

The call was rejected.

She tried again.

Rejected.

Again.

Rejected.

Finally, she sent a message.

We need to talk.

A few minutes later, Mariana replied.

Only one sentence.

There is nothing left to discuss.

Brenda stared at the message.

For the first time, she felt what Mariana had felt for years.

Being ignored.

Being dismissed.

Being powerless.

But unlike Mariana...

Brenda had never learned how to survive without power.

That evening, Andrew returned home.

The mansion was quiet.

Too quiet.

He walked through the halls.

The same halls where he had embarrassed Mariana.

The same room where he had ordered her to kneel.

He stopped beside the broken coffee table.

The glass had been cleaned.

But he remembered.

He remembered her face.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

That was what haunted him.

She wasn't shocked because he hurt her.

She was shocked because she finally realized the man she loved was gone.

Andrew sat down.

For the first time in years...

He questioned everything.

Had he built anything?

Or had Mariana built everything while he took the credit?

Late that night, Andrew received an unexpected call.

He almost didn't answer.

But he did.

"Hello?"

A familiar voice spoke.

"Andrew."

He froze.

"Mariana."

Silence filled the line.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Andrew whispered:

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Mariana's voice was calm.

"Tell you what?"

"That you had this power."

A pause.

Then she answered:

"Because I never wanted power over you."

Those words hurt more than anger.

Andrew closed his eyes.

"Mariana..."

"I wanted a husband."

Her voice became softer.

"Not someone who needed me only when things were falling apart."

Andrew couldn't respond.

Because for the first time...

He knew she was right.

Before ending the call, Mariana said one final thing.

"Tomorrow, Andrew..."

"The final documents will be released."

His heart sank.

"What documents?"

"The ones showing exactly what happened four years ago."

A cold feeling moved through him.

"What do you mean?"

Mariana paused.

"The truth about how your company was really saved."

Then the call ended.

Andrew sat in silence.

Because suddenly he realized...

The collapse of his empire wasn't the worst thing waiting for him.

May you like

The worst thing...

Was everyone discovering how he got that empire in the first place.
