Chapter 9: The Chase

Chapter 9: The Chase

The twin-engine Gulfstream climbed steadily into the morning sky.

Inside the cabin, Richard Bennett loosened his tie for the first time that day.

He glanced through the oval window as the city disappeared beneath a blanket of clouds.

He told himself he was finally safe.

His assistant sat across from him, nervously clutching a tablet.

"Sir..."

Richard didn't look up.

"What now?"

"The news about Cross Medical Logistics is getting worse."

Richard waved a dismissive hand.

"I don't care about Nathan Cross."

"Not anymore."

The assistant hesitated.

"There's something else."

Richard finally looked up.

"The Bennett Family Foundation has announced an emergency forensic audit."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Arthur moved faster than I expected."

"He always does."

The assistant swallowed.

"They're also asking anyone with historical records to come forward."

Richard stared out the window again.

"Let them look."

"They'll never find what matters."

He rested one hand on the leather briefcase beside him.

Everything he needed was inside.

Or so he believed.

Back at Meridian Medical Center...

Claire had just finished another skin-to-skin session with Emma.

The tiny infant slept peacefully against her mother's chest.

Her breathing was calm.

Her heartbeat steady.

The chief neonatologist smiled.

"She's responding beautifully."

Claire kissed the top of Emma's head.

"She's stronger than all of us."

The doctor laughed softly.

"I think you may be right."

A nurse carefully returned Emma to her incubator.

Sophia immediately began squirming as if demanding equal attention.

Claire laughed.

"Don't worry."

"I know."

"It's your turn."

Arthur watched the scene from the doorway.

Every smile on Claire's face reminded him why he had to uncover the truth.

No matter how painful it became.

Meanwhile...

Two hundred miles away...

A second aircraft leveled off behind Richard's jet.

Inside sat retired FBI Special Agent Daniel Mercer.

Beside him was former U.S. Marshal Elena Brooks.

Both had spent decades tracking financial fugitives.

Arthur Bennett trusted them with one instruction.

Find Richard.

Before he disappeared forever.

Daniel reviewed the flight information.

"He filed a destination."

Elena looked over.

"Where?"

"The Cayman Islands."

She smiled faintly.

"Classic."

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't think that's where he's actually going."

"You think it's a diversion?"

"I know Richard Bennett's type."

"He'll change planes."

"Change passports."

"Disappear before customs even realizes he landed."

Elena looked out the window.

"Not this time."

At the hospital...

Harold Mason entered Arthur's private office.

"We recovered additional emails."

Arthur looked up.

"Anything useful?"

Harold handed him several printed pages.

"They were deleted years ago."

"Our digital recovery team reconstructed them."

Arthur adjusted his glasses.

The emails were between Richard...

And someone identified only by the initials J.M.

One message stood out.

The original certificate must never surface.
Eleanor can never know.

Arthur read the sentence twice.

His face turned pale.

"Eleanor."

Harold nodded.

"If this email is authentic..."

Arthur finished the thought.

"...then my wife never knew."

For years Arthur had quietly wondered whether Eleanor had hidden something from him.

Now the possibility was reversed.

Someone had hidden something from both of them.

Claire entered the office carrying a cup of tea.

She smiled.

"You two look serious."

Arthur quickly closed the folder.

"Just foundation business."

Claire frowned.

"You've been saying that a lot lately."

Arthur forced a smile.

"Occupational hazard."

Claire studied him carefully.

She had learned long ago that Arthur only smiled like that when he was protecting someone.

Usually her.

She decided not to press him.

Instead she changed the subject.

"The girls gained more weight."

Arthur's genuine smile returned.

"That's the best news I've heard all day."

Hundreds of miles away...

Richard's aircraft landed briefly at a private airport.

The engines remained running.

A black SUV was already waiting.

Richard hurried down the steps carrying only his briefcase.

The driver opened the rear door.

"No delays?"

Richard asked.

"None."

"Good."

The SUV sped toward a private marina.

Ten minutes later...

Richard boarded a sleek white yacht.

Its name read:

Sea Promise.

He looked back only once.

No one appeared to be following him.

He smiled.

"Arthur..."

"You've finally lost."

But at that exact moment...

High above the harbor...

A small surveillance aircraft circled silently.

Daniel Mercer lowered a high-powered camera.

"I've got him."

Elena looked at the live images.

"Don't move yet."

"Why?"

"He's leading us somewhere."

Daniel nodded.

"To whoever's waiting."

Back at Meridian Medical Center...

That evening...

Nathan returned once again.

This time he carried nothing.

No flowers.

No gifts.

No expectations.

He simply sat in the hospital chapel.

An elderly volunteer noticed him.

"You look troubled."

Nathan laughed bitterly.

"I've made the biggest mistake of my life."

The woman sat beside him.

"Can you fix it?"

Nathan looked toward the stained-glass window.

"I don't know."

She smiled gently.

"Then don't start by asking for forgiveness."

Nathan looked confused.

"Start by becoming someone worthy of it."

The words stayed with him long after she walked away.

Later that night...

Arthur finally inserted the recovered flash drive into another secure computer.

A hidden folder appeared automatically.

Unlike the others...

This one required a password.

Harold frowned.

"Any ideas?"

Arthur thought for a long moment.

Then slowly typed one name.

Eleanor.

Access denied.

He tried another.

Claire.

Denied again.

Harold crossed his arms.

"What now?"

Arthur closed his eyes.

Then he remembered something Eleanor used to say every time they visited the orphanage at Willow House.

She always smiled and whispered,

"Every child deserves a tomorrow."

Arthur typed a single word.

Tomorrow.

The folder opened.

Both men stared at the screen.

Inside were dozens of scanned letters.

Medical records.

Photographs.

And a video file dated nearly thirty years earlier.

Its title consisted of only six words.

For Claire—When She Is Ready.

Arthur's hands trembled.

Harold looked at him.

"Do we watch it?"

Arthur stared through the office window toward the executive nursery, where Claire sat reading softly to Emma and Sophia.

He slowly shook his head.

"Not tonight."

"Because once we press play..."

"...Claire's life will never be the same again."

And far out on the dark ocean...

Richard Bennett stood alone on the deck of the yacht, convinced he had escaped.

He never noticed the small tracking device that Daniel Mercer had quietly attached to the hull during the brief stop at the marina.

The chase was no longer about stolen millions.

May you like

It was about a truth that had been buried for nearly three decades.

A truth that was now only one video away from changing everything.
