Chapter 8: The Birth Certificate

Chapter 8: The Birth Certificate

Richard Bennett locked his office door.

His pulse thundered in his ears.

For the first time in years, he wasn't thinking about money.

He was thinking about survival.

He crossed the room and stopped before an oil painting of the Bennett family's original farmhouse.

Anyone else would have admired the artwork.

Richard reached beneath the frame instead.

A hidden latch clicked.

The painting swung outward.

Behind it sat a biometric safe.

His fingerprint.

A six-digit code.

A retinal scan.

The heavy steel door unlocked with a deep metallic thud.

Inside were stacks of legal files, encrypted hard drives, passports...

And one faded manila envelope.

Across the front, written in Eleanor Bennett's unmistakable handwriting, were five words.

Open Only If Absolutely Necessary.

Richard stared at it.

"It wasn't supposed to come to this."

He carefully removed the envelope.

Before he could open it, his phone vibrated.

His assistant sounded breathless.

"Sir... they're here."

"Who?"

"The Bennett investigators."

Richard glanced toward the office window.

Three black SUVs had stopped outside the foundation headquarters.

Arthur had wasted no time.

Richard slipped the envelope into his briefcase.

"They're too late."

He picked up his coat and walked toward a private elevator hidden behind another wall.

At Meridian Medical Center...

Claire sat in a rocking chair between Emma and Sophia's incubators.

The girls had just finished another feeding.

Both were sleeping peacefully.

The chief neonatologist approached with encouraging news.

"Sophia is breathing on her own for longer periods."

Claire smiled.

"And Emma?"

"She's becoming remarkably stable."

The doctor looked genuinely impressed.

"They're exceeding every expectation."

Claire leaned over each incubator.

"I knew you could do it."

Arthur watched quietly from the doorway.

He wished every day could remain like this.

Unfortunately...

Reality refused to wait.

Harold entered carrying a sealed folder.

Arthur immediately understood.

"They found something."

Harold nodded once.

"But Richard is gone."

Arthur frowned.

"Gone?"

"He emptied his office before investigators arrived."

"What about the records?"

"Most were destroyed."

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Most?"

Harold handed him a flash drive.

"One employee secretly copied several files months ago."

Arthur looked surprised.

"Why?"

"He suspected financial misconduct."

Arthur slipped the drive into his pocket.

"Good man."

Harold lowered his voice.

"There's another issue."

Arthur looked up.

"We can't locate the original birth records."

Arthur froze.

"What did you say?"

"The archives are incomplete."

"The files involving Claire's birth are missing."

Arthur felt an unfamiliar knot form in his stomach.

He had personally stored those records decades earlier.

No one should have been able to access them.

No one except...

"Eleanor."

Or Richard.

Later that afternoon...

Arthur sat alone inside the hospital's secure legal office.

He inserted the flash drive into an encrypted computer.

Thousands of financial documents appeared.

Invoices.

Wire transfers.

Emails.

Corporate minutes.

Everything looked routine.

Until one folder caught his attention.

PRIVATE – R.B.

Arthur opened it.

Only three files remained.

The first detailed offshore accounts.

The second listed hidden real estate purchases.

The third contained only a single scanned image.

Arthur enlarged it.

His breathing stopped.

It wasn't a financial document.

It was a birth certificate.

Claire's birth certificate.

But not the version he remembered.

He read the first line.

Mother: Olivia Bennett.

Correct.

Then the second.

Father:

Arthur frowned.

The space had been left blank.

Except someone had later typed another name over the original record.

The alteration was obvious.

The ink didn't match.

The formatting was wrong.

Someone had deliberately changed the document.

Arthur whispered,

"My God..."

The office door opened.

Harold stepped inside.

"What happened?"

Arthur slowly turned the monitor toward him.

Harold studied the document.

Then looked up.

"This is forged."

Arthur nodded.

"Yes."

"But why?"

Harold thought for a moment.

"Someone wanted to hide Claire's real father."

Arthur leaned back in his chair.

"Or convince everyone she had a different one."

The realization struck both men at the same time.

Richard hadn't just stolen money.

He had rewritten family history.

Across the city...

Richard drove toward a private airfield.

His briefcase rested on the passenger seat.

Inside it...

The sealed envelope seemed to weigh more than steel.

His phone rang again.

This time he answered.

"What?"

A nervous voice replied.

"The investigators recovered digital copies."

Richard's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"How many?"

"We don't know."

Richard ended the call without another word.

He accelerated.

If Arthur uncovered the truth before he escaped...

Everything would be over.

Back at the hospital...

Claire had no idea any of this was happening.

She was busy celebrating a small miracle.

A nurse smiled as she adjusted Emma's blanket.

"Would you like to try feeding her yourself tomorrow?"

Claire's eyes widened.

"Am I allowed?"

"I think she's ready."

Claire looked down at her daughter.

"I've been waiting to hear that."

The nurse laughed.

"I know."

Sophia suddenly let out a surprisingly loud cry.

Claire chuckled.

"And someone doesn't like being ignored."

The nurse gently lifted Sophia for another brief skin-to-skin session.

Claire kissed the top of her tiny head.

"You've already learned how to demand attention."

Arthur stood outside the room watching through the glass.

His smile faded.

He still held the forged birth certificate in his hand.

For twenty-nine years...

He had believed he knew every truth about his family.

Now he wasn't sure of anything.

Harold walked beside him.

"What do we tell Claire?"

Arthur looked through the window at his granddaughter holding Sophia while Emma slept peacefully nearby.

"Nothing."

"Not until we know the whole truth."

Harold nodded.

"And Richard?"

Arthur's eyes hardened.

"Find him."

"I don't care where he runs."

"I don't care who protects him."

"He stole from children."

"He betrayed this family."

"And now..."

Arthur folded the forged birth certificate carefully.

"...he has lied about the identity of Claire's father."

Outside, hundreds of miles away, Richard's private jet began taxiing toward the runway.

He believed he was escaping.

He didn't realize another aircraft had just taken off from the Bennett family airfield.

It wasn't carrying lawyers.

Or accountants.

It carried two retired federal investigators who had worked with Arthur Bennett for decades.

Their instructions were simple.

Bring Richard Bennett home.

May you like

Alive.

And before he had the chance to destroy the one piece of evidence that could reveal why Claire's birth certificate had been altered all those years ago.
