Chapter 6: The Man Outside the Glass

Chapter 6: The Man Outside the Glass

Nathan Cross stood motionless outside the secured executive floor.

In his right hand was a small gray stuffed elephant.

Its oversized ears were stitched with tiny blue stars.

He had spent nearly twenty minutes choosing it from the hospital gift shop.

The cashier had smiled.

"Is it for your baby?"

Nathan had answered quietly.

"My daughters."

The words still felt unfamiliar.

Now the toy hung uselessly at his side.

A security officer approached him.

"Good morning, sir."

Nathan nodded.

"I'd like to see my daughters."

The officer checked a tablet.

"I'm sorry."

"Only individuals approved by Ms. Bennett may enter this floor."

Nathan frowned.

"I'm their father."

The officer's expression remained professional.

"I understand."

"But I still need authorization."

Nathan looked through the reinforced glass doors.

Beyond them, nurses moved calmly between private suites.

Somewhere inside...

Emma and Sophia were sleeping.

Less than fifty feet away.

Yet they had never felt farther.

"Please."

The word came naturally this time.

The officer pressed an intercom.

"I'll ask."

A minute later, the chief nursing supervisor appeared.

She recognized Nathan immediately.

"I'll speak with Ms. Bennett."

Nathan waited.

Every second felt like an hour.

Finally...

The supervisor returned.

Her voice was kind.

"I'm sorry."

"Ms. Bennett isn't ready to see you."

Nathan lowered his head.

"I understand."

She hesitated.

"She did ask me to tell you something."

Nathan looked up.

"What did she say?"

The nurse repeated Claire's exact words.

"If he truly wants to become their father, he can start by becoming a better man."

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Nathan closed his eyes.

"I deserved that."

The nurse nodded gently.

"I think you know you did."

She disappeared behind the secured doors.

Nathan remained standing there long after she had gone.

Inside the executive suite...

Claire had watched the entire exchange on the hallway security monitor.

She hadn't expected him to come.

Arthur stepped beside her.

"You could have let him in."

Claire nodded.

"I know."

"Why didn't you?"

Claire looked toward Emma and Sophia.

"Because today isn't about him."

"It's about them."

Arthur smiled faintly.

"You sound like your grandmother."

Claire laughed softly.

"I've been told that's dangerous."

Arthur chuckled.

"For anyone standing on the wrong side of you."

Across town...

The emergency board meeting at Cross Medical Logistics was entering its fourth hour.

The atmosphere inside the executive conference room was icy.

Nathan's former chief operating officer stood before the board.

"We've completed the overnight review."

A director asked the obvious question.

"How much damage?"

The answer stunned everyone.

"Twelve major hospital systems have suspended purchasing agreements."

Another executive added,

"Three international partners terminated negotiations."

"And our primary lender has frozen the company's revolving credit facility."

Silence spread around the room.

One board member finally asked,

"What caused this?"

No one answered immediately.

Everyone already knew.

Trust.

The company hadn't merely lost money.

It had lost credibility.

The acting chair looked toward Harold Mason, who was attending remotely.

"Mr. Mason."

"Will Meridian continue doing business with us?"

Harold answered calmly.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"The outcome of the compliance investigation."

The room fell silent again.

One elderly board member removed his glasses.

"I warned Nathan years ago."

Another looked surprised.

"You did?"

"He became arrogant."

"He stopped listening."

"He believed success made him untouchable."

No one argued.

Because everyone had seen it happen.

Back at the hospital...

Claire was finally discharged from inpatient care.

A nurse handed her a folder.

"These are your recovery instructions."

Claire smiled.

"Thank you."

Another nurse approached carrying a wheelchair.

Claire laughed.

"I can walk."

Hospital policy required the chair anyway.

Arthur pushed her himself.

As they entered the private elevator, Claire suddenly asked,

"Grandpa..."

"Can I ask you something?"

"Always."

"Why didn't you tell Nathan who we were?"

Arthur smiled knowingly.

"You think I didn't want to?"

Claire nodded.

He leaned lightly on his cane.

"The day you introduced him to me..."

"He looked me in the eye and said he would build a life worthy of you."

Claire remembered.

Arthur continued.

"I believed him."

"So did Grandma."

"We agreed that if his love depended on our name..."

"It wasn't love."

Claire looked down.

"I thought he loved me."

Arthur answered gently.

"I believe he did."

Claire looked surprised.

Arthur continued.

"But somewhere along the way..."

"He started loving success more."

The elevator doors opened.

A spacious family lounge overlooked the city skyline.

Claire wheeled herself to the window.

Rain clouds had finally cleared.

Sunlight reflected across dozens of glass buildings.

"It feels like my whole life ended yesterday."

Arthur stood beside her.

"No."

He smiled.

"Yesterday ended one chapter."

"Today begins another."

That afternoon...

Nathan drove home alone.

The penthouse felt painfully quiet.

Claire's favorite books were gone.

Her piano stood untouched in the corner.

The nursery they had prepared months earlier remained exactly as she had left it.

Two white cribs.

A rocking chair.

A mobile with tiny stars hanging above it.

Nathan slowly walked inside.

He picked up a framed ultrasound photo from the dresser.

He remembered the day it had been taken.

Claire had cried with happiness.

He had answered a business call before the appointment even ended.

She never complained.

Now he wondered how many moments like that he had stolen from her.

His phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

There was no greeting.

Only a single photograph.

It showed Claire holding Emma against her chest earlier that morning.

Both mother and daughter were asleep.

Beneath the picture were just seven words.

This is what you chose to lose.

Nathan stared at the screen for a very long time.

Then...

For the first time since he was a little boy...

He cried.

Not because he had lost his company.

Not because his reputation was collapsing.

But because he finally understood something no amount of money could ever repair.

Some opportunities in life...

Arrive only once.

And he had walked away from his while carrying divorce papers into the neonatal intensive care unit.

Miles away, inside the peaceful executive suite, Claire sat between Emma and Sophia as the evening sun filled the room with warm golden light.

She smiled as both girls slept soundly.

She had no idea that another storm was already approaching.

Because hidden deep inside the compliance files seized from Cross Medical Logistics...

Investigators had just uncovered a series of transactions connected to a name that shocked Arthur Bennett.

Not Nathan Cross.

Not Ava.

May you like

But someone Arthur had trusted for over twenty-five years.

Someone inside the Bennett family itself.
