Chapter 2: Fifteen Minutes

Nathan let out another laugh, but this one lacked confidence.

"Claire," he said, shaking his head. "You're still trying to scare me with fairy tales?"

Ava folded her arms across her stomach.

"I think she's in shock."

Neither of them noticed the subtle change sweeping through the NICU.

The charge nurse had just received a call.

Her expression shifted instantly.

She glanced toward Claire.

Then toward the entrance.

Within seconds, every nurse at the station quietly straightened their posture.

One by one, department supervisors began arriving outside the unit.

No one spoke.

They simply waited.

Nathan frowned.

"What is this?"

A young administrator hurried past carrying a tablet.

She almost collided with him but didn't apologize.

Instead, she whispered into her headset.

"They've arrived."

Claire remained seated beside her daughters.

Her hand rested gently against the glass of the nearest incubator.

She refused to look away from the tiny face inside.

The baby wrapped her impossibly small fingers around the edge of a blanket.

Claire smiled through exhausted tears.

"You keep fighting, sweetheart."

The automatic elevators opened.

The hallway outside suddenly fell silent.

Even the conversations at the nurses' station stopped.

A procession of black-suited security personnel stepped out first.

They moved with practiced precision, scanning every corner before stepping aside.

Behind them walked an elderly man with silver hair and a polished walnut cane.

Despite being well into his eighties, he carried himself with quiet authority.

His eyes searched the room only once.

The moment they found Claire, every trace of sternness disappeared.

"My little girl."

Arthur Bennett crossed the room faster than anyone expected.

Claire struggled to stand.

He gently stopped her.

"No."

His voice softened.

"You've already suffered enough."

He wrapped one arm around her shoulders with extraordinary care.

For the first time since the emergency delivery...

Claire allowed herself to cry.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough to release forty-eight hours of fear.

Arthur held her until she caught her breath.

Then he turned.

His gentle expression disappeared.

Nathan suddenly felt the room become much colder.

"Which one is Nathan Cross?"

No one answered.

Arthur already knew.

Nathan stepped forward anyway.

"I'm Nathan."

He extended his hand.

"It seems there's been some misunderstanding."

Arthur didn't even glance at it.

Instead, he looked toward another man entering the NICU.

Harold Mason.

Chief Executive Officer of Meridian Health Alliance.

Behind him came the hospital's regional director...

the medical center president...

the chief of neonatal medicine...

the legal counsel...

and nearly a dozen senior executives.

Every one of them stopped beside Arthur Bennett.

Harold spoke first.

"Mr. Bennett."

Arthur nodded once.

"Explain."

Harold swallowed.

"We received Miss Bennett's call approximately twelve minutes ago."

Nathan blinked.

Miss Bennett?

Harold continued.

"The board has already been notified."

Claire quietly corrected him.

"I never changed my legal family designation."

Nathan slowly turned toward her.

"What?"

Claire looked up.

"My married name was used socially."

She paused.

"But legally..."

"My family advised me to keep Bennett."

Nathan stared.

The divorce papers in his briefcase suddenly felt much heavier.

Arthur rested one hand on Claire's shoulder.

"I insisted."

Nathan forced a smile.

"I'm afraid I don't understand."

Arthur finally looked directly at him.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"You never bothered to."

Harold handed Arthur a tablet.

Arthur glanced at the screen before returning it.

"Mr. Cross."

Nathan straightened.

"You've spent years telling people you built Cross Medical Logistics from nothing."

Nathan nodded cautiously.

"I did."

Arthur's eyes never left him.

"Who financed your first warehouse?"

Nathan hesitated.

"A private investor."

Arthur continued.

"Who guaranteed your first commercial loan after three banks rejected you?"

Nathan said nothing.

Arthur answered for him.

"Bennett Capital."

Ava's face lost its color.

Nathan frowned.

"That was years ago."

Arthur nodded.

"Indeed."

"And every expansion afterward was backed through subsidiaries connected to our family office."

Nathan looked confused.

"Impossible."

Harold stepped forward.

"It isn't."

He opened another file.

"The ownership structures were intentionally layered."

"You never knew who your silent partner was."

Nathan's heartbeat quickened.

Claire watched silently.

Harold looked directly at Nathan.

"You own thirty-four percent of your company."

Nathan answered automatically.

"Correct."

Harold shook his head.

"You own voting rights for thirty-four percent."

"The Bennett Family Trust owns fifty-one."

Silence exploded across the room.

Nathan actually laughed.

"No."

Harold slid several certified documents across a nearby counter.

"Yes."

Nathan grabbed them.

His eyes moved rapidly across page after page.

Corporate registrations.

Trust agreements.

Board resolutions.

Signatures.

Official seals.

Everything was authentic.

His hands began to tremble.

"This..."

He looked up.

"...this can't be real."

Arthur's expression never changed.

"You spent years believing you were the most powerful person in every room."

He slowly pointed toward the incubators.

"But today..."

He looked at Claire.

"...you abandoned the only people who truly mattered."

Nathan turned desperately toward Claire.

"You knew?"

Claire nodded once.

"My grandmother wanted me to marry someone who loved me."

"So she hid our family."

Nathan's breathing became uneven.

"You tested me?"

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"You revealed yourself."

Ava suddenly grabbed Nathan's arm.

"Say something."

Nathan couldn't.

Because outside...

More black vehicles continued arriving.

This time, they weren't carrying executives.

They carried attorneys.

Corporate auditors.

Members of Meridian Health Alliance's board.

And two federal healthcare compliance officers who had been quietly investigating procurement contracts linked to Cross Medical Logistics for nearly six months.

Harold's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen before looking back at Arthur.

"They're ready."

Arthur nodded once.

"Good."

Then he looked at Nathan.

May you like

"This conversation..."

"...is only the beginning."
