Chapter 9 - The Mistress's Bargain.

I read my father's handwriting until the words stopped looking like language.

Sloane is not Evan's mistress.

She is my witness.

The sentence should have relieved me.

Instead, it made the betrayal feel even more elaborate.

If Sloane had been working with my father, why had she walked out of the hospital with my husband?

Why had I seen messages between them for months?

Why had Evan called her sweetheart in a hotel receipt I found two weeks before Lily was born?

Luca turned the photograph over again.

"There is a date."

Daniel leaned closer.

"Three months before Gabriel died."

I took the photograph from them.

Sloane stood beside my father outside a coffee shop.

She looked different.

No polished makeup.

No expensive coat.

Her hair was tied back, and she was looking over her shoulder as if someone had followed her.

"What if Dad was wrong?"

Daniel frowned.

"About what?"

"What if she was both?"

Luca looked at me.

"Witness and mistress."

"Yes."

Nobody liked that possibility.

It was also the first one that explained everything.

Sloane had access to Evan because he trusted her.

She had access to Halcyon because she worked there.

She had access to my father because she was feeding him information.

And if she had been sleeping with Evan while doing it, then she had been standing inside three different betrayals at once.

The disposable phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The screen showed no caller ID.

Luca reached for it.

I took it first.

"Mara," he said.

"My phone."

"It was sent to you."

"Exactly."

I answered.

"Sloane?"

Silence.

Then a breath.

"Yes."

Her voice sounded exhausted.

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"You walked out of the hospital with my husband."

"I know."

"My father called you his witness."

A long pause.

"You found the locket."

"Someone delivered it to Luca's house."

"That wasn't me."

Luca's eyes sharpened.

"Who knew about it?" I asked.

"Your father, me, and Evan."

"Then Evan sent it?"

"No."

"How do you know?"

"Because he is looking for it."

I felt my stomach turn.

"Where is he?"

"At Halcyon's old records facility."

Daniel mouthed, Address.

"Give me the address."

Sloane laughed once, nervously.

"You really are Gabriel's daughter."

"Address."

She gave it to me.

Daniel wrote it down.

Luca was already texting someone.

"Sloane, did you have an affair with Evan?"

Nobody moved.

Her silence answered before her words did.

"Yes."

Pain should have followed.

Instead, I felt an almost ridiculous sense of confirmation.

At least one thing was simple.

"For how long?"

"Eleven months."

The number forced me to rebuild the final year of my marriage in reverse.

Eleven months meant Sloane had been there when Evan and I began our second fertility cycle.

She had been there when he started taking calls on the balcony.

She had been there when he suddenly knew more about Halcyon billing than our own patient coordinator.

She had been there when he encouraged me to stop asking my father for advice because Dad was "making the process stressful."

I remembered one evening when Evan came home smelling faintly of a perfume I did not own.

He told me a client had hugged him after a successful presentation.

I apologized for asking.

The memory made me close my eyes.

Sloane's voice came quietly through the phone.

"I know what you are remembering."

"You don't."

"He lied to you about the Harbor Hotel in March."

My eyes opened.

The Harbor Hotel charge had been the first receipt I ever confronted him about.

He told me his firm booked a conference room there.

I had believed him because the amount was too large for a normal hotel room.

"What happened there?"

"We met in a suite."

I gripped the phone tighter.

"Why tell me that now?"

"Because if I clean up the truth to make myself easier to forgive, I'm doing the same thing he did."

That answer stopped me.

Sloane continued.

"I copied his laptop that night while he was in the shower."

"That was when I found the first M-series invoice."

"So you were spying on him while sleeping with him."

"Yes."

"You understand how little that improves things."

"Yes."

"Did you ever plan to tell me?"

"Every week."

"But you didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because every week I convinced myself one more document would make the risk worth it."

Her voice shook.

"That was cowardice dressed up as strategy."

I leaned back in the chair.

At least she had learned to name it.

"Why?"

"That question has more than one answer."

"Give me the ugliest one first."

"I wanted access."

"To what?"

"His phone, his accounts, his meetings with Vaughn."

"And the other answer?"

Her voice became quieter.

"I liked him before I understood what he was."

The honesty hurt more than a neat excuse would have.

"Did my father ask you to sleep with him?"

"No."

"Good."

"Gabriel hated that I was involved with Evan."

"I imagine he did."

"He told me to get out."

"But you stayed."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Evan started talking about your pregnancy."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"What did he say?"

"He said the third cycle had finally worked because they had stopped leaving things to chance."

A coldness spread through me.

"What does that mean?"

"At first, I thought he meant a different treatment protocol."

"Then?"

"I saw a transfer order on his laptop."

"M-17."

"Yes."

Luca looked away.

His face had gone hard.

"Who signed it?"

"Evan and Vaughn."

"Do you have a copy?"

"Yes."

Daniel leaned closer to the phone.

"Where?"

Sloane heard him.

"Daniel Kessler?"

"Yes."

"Gabriel said you would sound disappointed even during a fire."

Daniel almost smiled.

"Where is the copy?"

"In the blue ledger archive."

"What does the key open?"

"A safe-deposit drawer inside the old records facility."

Luca stopped texting.

"That facility is likely compromised."

Sloane's breath caught.

"Luca is there?"

"Yes."

"Do not let him use Moretti security."

His eyes narrowed.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because someone inside his father's organization is still connected to Vaughn."

Luca stepped closer.

"Name them."

Sloane hesitated.

"I only know the code name."

"What code name?"

"Gatekeeper."

Luca went still.

I saw recognition.

"You know it."

He did not answer.

"Luca."

"My father used that name for one person."

"Who?"

His jaw tightened.

"Victor Dane."

Sloane whispered, "Victor is dead."

"That does not mean someone stopped using his credentials."

The line crackled.

Then Sloane spoke quickly.

"Mara, listen to me."

"I'm listening."

"The blue ledger is not just about Lily."

"What is it about?"

"Seventeen pregnancies."

Claire had said seventeen M-series files.

My chest tightened.

"Were all of them unauthorized?"

"I think so."

"Were all the children born?"

"I don't know."

The answer hurt in a way I had not expected.

This was bigger than my marriage.

Bigger than Lily.

Seventeen families might have been living inside lies they never chose.

"Why did Dad hide the ledger instead of going public?"

"Because he did not know who to trust."

"Did he trust you?"

"Not completely."

That sounded like my father too.

"He gave me one job."

"What?"

"If he died before you gave birth, I was supposed to keep Evan close until Lily's paternity could be independently established."

My throat tightened.

"So walking out with him today was part of that?"

"Yes."

"Did he tell you to humiliate me?"

"No."

Her voice broke slightly.

"That part is mine."

I said nothing.

"I am sorry."

I was not ready to accept it.

"I watched you touch his back while he left his daughter."

"I know."

"You could have told me."

"If I told you before we had proof, Evan would know the investigation survived Gabriel."

"He knows now."

"Yes."

A metallic sound came through the phone.

Sloane stopped breathing for a second.

"What was that?" I asked.

Nothing.

Then footsteps.

"Sloane?"

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"He found me."

My heart jumped.

"Who?"

The line went quiet.

"Sloane."

Luca held out his hand for the phone.

I put it on speaker instead.

We heard a door open.

A man's voice spoke in the distance.

"Sloane."

I knew the voice.

Evan.

May you like

Then he said something that made every person in Luca's kitchen freeze.

"Give me Gabriel's copy before Mara learns why her father really died."
