Chapter 13 - What DNA Remembered.

I did not let Evan through the gate immediately.

He stood in the rain while Keene searched his car, checked him for weapons, and confirmed that no one had followed him up the reservoir road.

Only then did I agree to let him enter the detached security office near the gate.

Not the house.

Not near Lily.

Not inside the rooms where I had finally managed to breathe.

Luca walked beside me but stayed half a step behind.

The choice felt deliberate.

He was there if I needed him.

He was not trying to stand in front of me.

Daniel joined us with the sealed DNA envelope inside a clear evidence sleeve.

Sloane remained at the house with Rosa and Lily.

Alessandro stayed too.

He had offered to leave.

Luca told him to stay and listen to whatever came next.

The security office was small, plain, and brutally bright.

Evan sat at a metal table with a towel around his shoulders.

He looked at me when I entered.

For a second, I saw the husband I had known.

Then I remembered that familiarity was not innocence.

"You look exhausted," he said.

I almost smiled.

"Do not start with concern now."

His eyes dropped.

Daniel placed the envelope on the table.

Evan visibly flinched.

"Tell me what is inside."

He looked at Daniel.

"I want to talk to Mara alone."

"No."

"Mara, please."

"No."

The refusal came easier every time.

"You spent three years making private conversations into places where you could rewrite what happened."

I sat across from him.

"You do not get privacy for this."

His face tightened.

"Fine."

"Start with what you said at the gate."

"Gabriel chose Moretti before the fertility treatment."

"For what?"

"To replace me."

Luca's expression did not change.

I heard the trap in Evan's wording.

"Replace you as what?"

"My role in the Hale trust."

Daniel leaned forward.

"That is false."

Evan glared at him.

"You drafted the amendment."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"I drafted a contingency trustee clause."

I looked at Daniel.

"When?"

"Seven months before Gabriel died."

"Why was I not told?"

"It did not affect your control unless both you and your spouse were unavailable or disqualified."

"Who was the contingency trustee?"

Daniel looked at Luca.

"Luca Moretti."

My breath caught.

Luca looked genuinely surprised.

"You did not know?"

"No."

Evan laughed bitterly.

"Of course he says that."

Daniel ignored him.

"Gabriel asked me to name Luca without notifying him until activation."

"Why Luca?"

"That explanation was in a separate sealed instruction."

Evan leaned toward me.

"Because your father wanted me out of your life."

"No," Daniel said.

"He wanted a fallback fiduciary who had already demonstrated he would expose misconduct even when it harmed his own family."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

Daniel continued.

"Eight years ago, Veridian suffered a storage-temperature failure at one of its medical banks."

Alessandro's history.

Luca's family company.

Daniel looked at Luca.

"You reported it to regulators."

Luca said nothing.

I remembered Alessandro calling his son disloyal earlier without using the word.

Daniel went on.

"The disclosure cost Veridian tens of millions of dollars and forced a patient-notification program."

"Gabriel followed the case."

"He told me that if a man could expose his own family's failure when silence would have made him richer, that man understood the difference between loyalty and complicity."

I looked at Luca.

He seemed almost uncomfortable with the praise.

"That is why Dad chose you."

Daniel opened another file from my father's trust archive.

It was an audio memo recorded seven months before Lily was born.

Gabriel's voice filled the room.

"If Evan and Mara are ever both unable to act, Moretti is the fallback, but do not tell him unless the clause activates."

There was a pause in the recording.

Then my father sighed.

"He will hate being volunteered."

Daniel's younger voice answered, "That is usually a sign someone is safe to volunteer."

My father laughed.

I had forgotten the exact sound of that laugh.

For a moment, grief pressed so hard against my ribs that I had to look away.

The recording continued.

"Do not misunderstand me, Daniel."

"I do not want Luca in Mara's life."

"I want Mara to choose her own life."

"I want a backup plan that cannot be purchased by whoever controls a marriage certificate."

Evan's expression changed at that sentence.

He had probably never heard my father describe his concern so plainly.

Neither had I.

Daniel stopped the recording.

"That was before Gabriel knew M-17 was Luca's specimen."

I looked at Evan.

"So no, Dad did not pick Luca to replace you as my husband."

My voice stayed calm.

"He picked someone he believed you could not buy."

"Apparently."

"Not because of M-17."

"No."

"Before he knew your sample had been used."

"Yes."

Evan's face had gone hard.

"He still wanted me gone."

I turned back to him.

"Maybe he saw you more clearly than I did."

That hurt him.

I could tell.

A part of me hated that I could still tell.

"Now the envelope."

Evan looked at it.

His hands began to shake.

"It is not about Lily."

I had expected that by then.

"Who is it about?"

"Me."

"And?"

He closed his eyes.

"Victor."

Luca leaned forward slightly.

"What about Victor?"

Evan looked at me.

"He was my father."

The sentence was so simple that for a second I did not understand why he was afraid of it.

Daniel did.

"Biological father?"

Evan nodded.

My mind moved through old photographs.

Victor beside Evan at the charity dinner.

Victor introducing him to Halcyon.

Victor receiving money coded V-GATE.

Victor following my father.

"You told me your father died when you were nine."

"The man who raised me did."

"Did you know about Victor when we met?"

"No."

"When did you find out?"

"Two years after we married."

"How?"

"Victor told me."

"Why?"

"Because he wanted me working with Halcyon."

The truth was beginning to connect in an ugly straight line.

"Did he recruit you because you were his son?"

"Yes."

"Did he tell you about M-series?"

"Eventually."

"Did you tell me?"

"No."

"Did you tell Dad?"

"No."

"Why was Dad testing your DNA?"

Evan looked at the envelope.

"Because he found a photograph of Victor holding me as a baby."

Daniel frowned.

"A photograph is not proof."

"Gabriel collected a drinking glass after a dinner at our house."

I stared at Evan.

Dad had come to dinner three months before he died.

Evan complained afterward that Dad had treated him like a suspect.

Apparently he had been one.

"And Victor's sample?"

"Gabriel got it through Sloane."

That explained why Sloane recognized the envelope.

"What does proving Victor was your father change?"

Evan's voice dropped.

"Everything about how this looks."

I almost laughed.

"How this looks?"

"It makes it look like I married you as part of Victor's plan."

"Did you?"

"No."

He answered too fast, then forced himself to slow down.

"No."

"I met you before I knew he was my father."

"I loved you before I knew anything about Halcyon."

That could be true.

The worst people rarely lied about everything.

Sometimes the true pieces were what kept the larger deception alive.

"Then why not tell me when you found out?"

"Because Victor said your father already hated me."

"Dad did not hate you."

"He did by then."

"Maybe because you were lying."

Evan's eyes filled with anger.

"I thought I could fix it."

"How?"

"By giving you what you wanted."

I went still.

"A baby."

"Yes."

The word almost made me physically ill.

"You thought Lily was something you could give me."

"We had tried for so long."

"That did not give you the right to choose someone else's DNA."

"I know that now."

"You knew it then."

He looked away.

Luca spoke for the first time in several minutes.

"Why my specimen?"

Evan did not look at him.

"Victor chose it."

"Why?"

"He said your profile was clean and your family would never admit a specimen-control failure."

Luca's expression hardened.

"He believed Alessandro would bury it."

"Yes."

From the house, Alessandro was listening through the secure feed.

His silence had a weight of its own.

"Victor was right," Luca said.

The admission was not aimed at Evan.

It was aimed at his father.

Evan wiped rainwater from his face though there was none left.

"I did not know Victor was going to hurt Gabriel."

"Did you know he was following him?"

"Yes."

"Did you give Victor money that night?"

"I gave Vaughn money for Victor."

"For what?"

"To recover the ledger and the DNA report."

"Why the DNA report?"

"Because if Gabriel proved Victor was my father, he could show that I had a hidden relationship with the man running Halcyon security."

"And that would prove your conflict of interest."

"Yes."

"Maybe more than that."

Evan's eyes met mine.

"Yes."

Daniel folded his hands.

"What happened after you paid Vaughn?"

"Victor called me."

"What did he say?"

"That Gabriel had left with copies."

"Then?"

"He said he would handle it."

I felt my heartbeat in my throat.

"What did you say?"

"I told him to get the files."

"Only the files?"

"Yes."

"Did he threaten Dad?"

"He said Gabriel needed to understand consequences."

"And you let him go."

Evan's face broke.

"Yes."

"Did you call Dad?"

"No."

"Did you call police?"

"No."

"Did you call me?"

"No."

Each answer landed like a stone.

He had not needed to order my father's death to betray him.

He had only needed to know danger was coming and choose himself.

Daniel looked at me.

"Do you want to open the report?"

Evan leaned forward.

"Mara, please."

I looked at him.

"What exactly are you asking me to protect?"

He could not answer.

"Your reputation?"

Silence.

"Your claim that Victor was just a business contact?"

Silence.

"Your chance to say Dad imagined the connection?"

His eyes closed.

"Yes."

There it was.

He was not begging me to protect Lily.

He was begging me to preserve ambiguity.

Ambiguity had been his favorite hiding place for years.

Daniel slid the envelope toward me.

I broke the seal.

Inside were two reports.

The first was a kinship analysis.

VICTOR DANE -- PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY TO EVAN CROSS: 99.98%.

Evan lowered his head.

The second report surprised everyone.

It was not another DNA test.

It was a toxicology-associated genetic screen ordered on tissue retained from my father's autopsy.

Daniel read the cover sheet twice.

"What is it?" I asked.

He looked at me.

"Gabriel requested that if he died unexpectedly, a specific metabolic marker be tested."

"For what?"

Daniel turned the page.

The marker showed exposure to a sedative compound that could impair reaction time without causing immediate unconsciousness.

My hands went cold.

"Dad had something in his system."

"Yes."

"Was it prescribed?"

"No."

Evan looked up sharply.

"I did not know about that."

I believed him.

That was the terrible part.

The report did not prove who gave my father the drug.

But attached to it was a handwritten note from Gabriel.

IF VICTOR IS EVAN'S FATHER AND THIS MARKER IS PRESENT, CHECK THE COFFEE SERVICE AT HALCYON.

Sloane's voice came through the secure speaker from the house.

"Oh, God."

I turned toward it.

"What?"

Her voice shook.

"I brought Gabriel coffee that night."

"Did you make it?"

"No."

"Who did?"

May you like

A long pause.

"Dr. Vaughn."
