Chapter 12 - The Envelope.

My father had been dead for four months, but the envelope made it feel as though he had reached into the present and placed one last decision in my hands.
I wanted to open it immediately.
I also wanted to throw it into the reservoir behind Luca's house.
Both impulses frightened me.
Daniel arranged for the sealed package to be brought to the house after Keene completed the evidence documentation.
It arrived just after sunset.
Nobody touched it for an hour.
It sat on Luca's dining table beneath a pendant light, plain and white and somehow more threatening than every dramatic thing that had happened since the hospital.
Alessandro remained in the living room.
Luca had not asked him to leave.
He had not forgiven him either.
Their silence seemed to occupy physical space.
Sloane arrived with Keene at eight o'clock.
She had a small bandage above her eyebrow and no trace of the polished woman who had walked beside Evan through the hospital corridor.
Before she sat down, Keene placed a clear evidence bag on the table.
Inside was Sloane's old Halcyon access badge and a thumb drive.
"What is on that?" Daniel asked.
"Copies of Evan's calendar exports, messages with Vaughn, and two audio notes I made after meetings," Sloane said.
"Why did you keep them?"
"Because Gabriel told me memory becomes negotiable when people are scared."
That sounded painfully like Dad.
Sloane looked at me.
"One calendar entry matters more than the others."
Keene slid a printed page toward me.
The entry was dated the morning of my third embryo transfer.
9:00 A.M. -- HALCYON LAB.
9:40 A.M. -- M-17 RELEASE CONFIRMATION.
10:15 A.M. -- MARA TRANSFER.
My name looked obscene beside the code.
"What was Evan doing there?"
"He arrived before you," Sloane said.
"He watched Vaughn approve the substitute specimen paperwork."
"Was he in the room when they used it?"
"No."
"But he knew before I got there."
"Yes."
I remembered Evan meeting me in reception with coffee and a smile.
He had kissed my forehead and told me everything was finally going to work.
The memory no longer belonged to the man I thought I married.
It belonged to evidence.
She stopped three feet from me.
"I'm sorry."
I looked at her.
"For sleeping with him?"
"Yes."
"For lying to me?"
"Yes."
"For letting me think you came to watch him abandon us?"
Her eyes filled.
"Yes."
I did not forgive her.
Not yet.
But I believed she understood what she had done.
That was enough for the moment.
"Sit."
She did.
Daniel showed her the envelope.
Her face changed.
"I've seen that."
"When?"
"Gabriel had it the night he died."
My heart jumped.
"Where?"
"At Halcyon."
Luca leaned forward.
"You were there that night?"
"Yes."
The photograph we had seen showed only four men leaving the building.
Sloane explained that she had remained inside.
My father had met with Evan, Vaughn, Luca, and Victor in separate conversations over several hours.
Luca had left before Victor arrived.
That mattered.
"What was Dad trying to do?"
"Force them to preserve the M-series evidence."
"Why bring Evan?"
"Because Gabriel already suspected Evan had ordered your substitution."
My throat tightened.
"Did he confront him?"
"Yes."
"What did Evan say?"
Sloane looked down.
"He said your father should be grateful."
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
"Grateful for what?"
"For making sure you became pregnant."
I felt nausea rise.
"He said Gabriel cared more about a Hale grandchild than about how it happened."
"He said Dad that to his face?"
"Yes."
"What did my father do?"
"He hit him."
I blinked.
Dad had never hit anyone in front of me.
Sloane almost smiled.
"Hard."
For one terrible second, I wished I had seen it.
Then the humor disappeared.
"Gabriel told Evan he was going to the police."
"What stopped him?"
"Victor."
Alessandro stood slowly.
"What did Victor do?"
Sloane looked at him with open dislike.
"He told Gabriel that exposing M-17 would also expose every Moretti investment and every patient file attached to the program."
"He threatened the families?"
"He threatened to leak their identities first and blame Gabriel for the breach."
Daniel swore.
It was clever in a cruel way.
My father wanted to protect victims.
Victor had turned that decency into leverage.
"What was in the envelope?" I asked.
Sloane shook her head.
"I never knew."
"Then why did Dad order it?"
"He told me it would prove the motive."
The phrase sat in the room.
Prove the motive.
Not just paternity.
Not just M-17.
Something about why Evan had done it.
My phone rang.
Evan.
Every person at the table looked at the screen.
I answered on speaker.
"Mara."
His voice sounded ragged.
For the first time, he sounded like a man who understood he was losing.
"Where are you?"
"That is not your concern."
"Is Moretti there?"
"Yes."
"Of course."
I ignored the bitterness.
"Why are you calling?"
He was silent for a moment.
Then he said, "Do not open the envelope."
Everyone in the room became still.
I looked at the white package on the table.
"How do you know about it?"
"Because Gabriel showed it to me."
"When?"
"The night he died."
"What is inside?"
"You do not want to know."
I almost laughed.
"You lost the right to decide what I want to know."
"Mara, listen to me."
"No."
"Please."
The word stopped me.
Evan did not say please when he was afraid.
He negotiated.
He blamed.
He reframed.
He did not beg.
Now he was begging.
"If you open that report, it will destroy more than me."
"Who else?"
Silence.
"Luca?"
No answer.
"Your family?"
Still nothing.
"Lily?"
His breath changed.
My hand tightened around the phone.
"What about Lily?"
"She is healthy."
"That was not my question."
"Mara, Gabriel was trying to scare me."
"Then why are you scared?"
He exhaled sharply.
"Because he did not understand what the test would do to you."
I felt anger rise.
"Do not use my father as your excuse."
"He knew something about you that you don't."
The room seemed to tilt.
Daniel's face changed.
"What does that mean?"
Evan said nothing.
"Evan."
"I loved you."
I almost dropped the phone.
"Do not."
"I did."
"You approved a stolen specimen."
"I was desperate."
"You forged my consent."
"I thought once you had the baby, none of it would matter."
"You thought a child would erase the crime."
"I thought she would make us a family."
"We were already supposed to be one."
His breathing broke.
I heard traffic in the background.
He was in a car.
"Where are you?"
"Doesn't matter."
"It matters to the police."
"Mara, I did not kill your father."
Nobody had accused him in that moment.
The denial came too fast.
"Then what did you pay for?"
Silence.
"The two hundred fifty thousand dollars."
He cursed softly.
"Who showed you that?"
"The ledger."
His breath stopped.
"You found it."
"Yes."
"Then it is over."
"For you?"
"For everyone."
I looked at Sloane.
She shook her head.
"Tell me what you paid Victor to do."
"I paid him to recover the copies."
"From Dad?"
"Yes."
"Did you tell him to hurt him?"
"No."
"Did you know Victor followed Dad?"
A long silence.
"Yes."
Alessandro sat down as if his legs had failed.
"Did you know Dad was driving Ridgeway that night?"
"Yes."
"Did you warn him?"
"No."
The answer was almost inaudible.
My eyes burned.
"You let a man you knew was being followed drive alone into the rain."
"I was scared."
"So was he."
"I know."
"No, you don't."
I ended the call.
My hands shook so badly I had to place the phone flat on the table.
Nobody spoke.
Then the security panel chimed.
Rosa looked at the screen.
Her face went pale.
"There is a car at the gate."
Luca stood.
"Who?"
Rosa enlarged the camera image.
Evan stood outside the iron gate in the rain.
No lawyer.
No Sloane.
No confident gray suit.
His shirt was open at the collar, and water ran through his hair.
He held both hands where the camera could see them.
Then he looked directly into the lens.
"Please let me talk to Mara."
I walked to the monitor.
He looked smaller than I had ever seen him.
"Why?" I asked through the intercom.
May you like
His face crumpled for one second before he recovered.
"Because if you open that envelope, you are going to learn why Gabriel chose Luca long before your fertility treatment ever started."
