Chapter 3 - The Missing Record.

I did not remember standing up.
One moment I was sitting with Lily in my arms.
The next I was on my feet staring at Luca's storage card while pain pulled across my abdomen and Claire begged me to sit down again.
"You're M-17."
Luca did not deny it.
"Yes."
The word hit me harder than Evan leaving.
At least betrayal by my husband had a shape I understood.
Affairs happened.
People lied.
Marriages ended.
But a stranger's biological storage code appearing in my dead father's warning about my pregnancy belonged to a world I had never imagined entering.
I looked down at Lily.
"No."
My voice shook.
"No, you don't get to stand there and say yes like this is normal."
"It isn't."
"Were you a donor?"
"No."
"Did you know my clinic?"
"Not until your father called me."
"Did you know me?"
"I knew your name."
"Before today?"
"Yes."
The room seemed to contract around us.
I wanted him to become obviously dangerous so I could hate him cleanly.
Instead, he looked almost angry with himself for every answer he gave.
"When was your sample stored?"
"Seven years ago."
"Why?"
"That is personal."
I laughed without humor.
"My daughter's chart has your name on it."
He held my gaze.
"I had lymphoma at twenty-seven."
The answer disarmed me.
He continued before I could react.
"I stored reproductive material before treatment because there was a chance the chemotherapy would leave me infertile."
"Did it?"
"No."
"And you never authorized anyone to use it?"
"Never."
Dr. Vaughn stepped toward the door.
"This conversation is based on assumptions and illegally obtained information."
Luca turned his head.
"Stay."
Vaughn stopped.
It was not the word itself.
It was the way Luca said it.
Claire closed the door.
I saw Vaughn register that he no longer controlled the room.
That frightened him.
Good.
"Why would my father have your sample code?"
Luca slipped the storage card back into his jacket.
"Gabriel sat on the advisory board of Halcyon Reproductive Health."
I knew the name.
Halcyon was the private fertility center Evan and I had used after eighteen months of trying to conceive.
My father had recommended it.
He had even offered to pay for treatment.
I had refused his money because Evan had been sensitive about accepting help from him.
"Dad was on their board?"
"Until six months before he died."
"He never told me."
"He resigned quietly."
"Why?"
"Because he found irregularities."
Vaughn interrupted.
"That allegation has never been substantiated."
Luca looked at him.
"I wasn't speaking to you."
Vaughn's mouth flattened.
I stared between them.
"You know each other."
Luca answered first.
"Yes."
Vaughn said nothing.
"How?"
"St. Catherine acquired Halcyon's laboratory network last year."
Luca's eyes remained on Vaughn.
"Dr. Vaughn signed the integration agreement."
My head began to ache.
"Why would a hospital COO care about one stored sample?"
"Because it wasn't one."
Claire's voice came from behind me.
We all turned.
She looked terrified, but she continued.
"I worked at Halcyon before I came here."
Vaughn took one step toward her.
"Be very careful."
Claire's eyes flashed.
"I was careful for three years."
She looked at me.
"M-17 wasn't a patient identifier."
"What was it?"
"A restricted specimen classification."
Luca's expression sharpened.
"How many?"
Claire swallowed.
"I don't know."
"How many did you see?"
"Seventeen M-series files."
The room became painfully quiet.
My mind caught on the number.
"Seventeen families?"
"I never saw names."
"What did the M stand for?"
Claire looked at Luca.
"Material exception."
"What does that mean?"
"It meant the stored genetic material did not match the consent pathway attached to the treatment cycle."
I stared at her.
"Say that like I am not a lawyer or a doctor."
Her voice softened.
"It means somebody used material that the paperwork did not properly authorize."
A cold pressure built behind my ribs.
I had undergone two unsuccessful cycles at Halcyon before becoming pregnant on the third.
Evan had held my hand during injections.
He had complained about the cost.
He had sat beside me when the physician told us the embryo transfer had gone well.
"How could that happen?"
Claire shook her head.
"It should not happen."
"Could a sample be switched by accident?"
"Yes, but modern labs use multiple safeguards."
"And seventeen accidents?"
"No."
Luca looked at Vaughn.
Vaughn had gone gray around the mouth.
That was the first answer I trusted.
I reached for my phone on the table.
"I'm calling the police."
Vaughn spoke immediately.
"You should consult counsel before making accusations that could expose your child's private medical history."
I froze with the phone in my hand.
The wording was careful.
Too careful.
"You're threatening me with my daughter's privacy?"
"I am advising caution."
Luca stepped beside me.
"He is advising silence."
Vaughn glared at him.
"And you are exploiting a vulnerable woman hours after delivery."
That sentence landed because part of me had already feared it.
I looked at Luca.
His face did not change.
"Maybe he's right."
Claire started to speak, but Luca lifted one hand.
"No."
He looked at me.
"You should question me."
I had not expected that.
"You should question why I am here, what I want, why your father trusted me, and whether I benefit if M-17 becomes public."
"Do you?"
"Yes."
Vaughn smiled for the first time.
Luca ignored him.
"If M-17 proves my stored material was used without consent, I have a claim against Halcyon and St. Catherine."
"How much?"
"Potentially a lot."
"So you do benefit."
"Yes."
The bluntness steadied me more than reassurance would have.
"What else?"
"My family foundation invested in Halcyon before I knew about the specimen program."
I stared at him.
"So your family could be implicated too."
"Yes."
"Then why expose it?"
His expression hardened.
"Because money is replaceable."
His gaze dropped to Lily.
"Consent isn't."
For the first time, I believed that sentence completely.
A knock struck the door.
One of the security officers leaned in.
"Ms. Hale, there is an attorney here asking to speak with you."
I looked at Evan through the glass.
He stood beside a woman in a navy pantsuit carrying a leather briefcase.
His lawyer.
Of course he had found one in less than twenty minutes.
"What does he want?"
The officer hesitated.
"He says he has an emergency petition regarding the child."
My blood went cold.
I opened the door before anyone could stop me.
Evan stepped forward.
"Mara, listen to me."
"Did you know about M-17?"
His lawyer touched his arm.
"Do not answer that."
I laughed.
"Great start."
Evan looked at Lily.
It was the first time he had really looked at her all day.
Not with love.
With calculation.
"I'm asking the hospital not to release her until paternity is clarified."
My entire body tightened.
"You walked out on her."
"I was upset."
"You left with your mistress."
"Mara."
"You don't get to say my name like I embarrassed you."
His lawyer stepped forward.
"Mrs. Cross, my client is still your legal spouse, and there are serious concerns about an unknown man attempting to sign paternal documents for your newborn."
Luca emerged behind me.
The attorney looked at him and visibly recalculated.
"I'm not unknown."
She straightened.
"To my client, you are."
Luca smiled without warmth.
"That is not true either."
Evan's face twitched.
I saw it.
So did the attorney.
I turned to Evan.
"You know him."
"No."
Luca reached into his jacket.
Evan stepped back as if expecting a weapon.
Instead, Luca produced a photograph.
He handed it to me.
The picture showed four men leaving a glass office building at night.
One was Luca.
One was Dr. Vaughn.
One was my father.
The fourth was Evan.
The timestamp in the corner was eleven days before my father died.
I looked at my husband.
He had told me he was in Chicago that night.
He had sent me a picture from an airport lounge.
I remembered because I had been angry that he missed my father's birthday dinner.
"Where was this taken?"
Luca answered.
"Halcyon's private laboratory annex."
The attorney closed her eyes for half a second.
Evan said nothing.
I looked back at the photograph.
My father was holding a red folder against his chest.
On the folder, written in thick black marker, was the code M-17.
Then Claire's workstation alarm sounded from inside the consultation room.
She rushed back to the computer.
"What now?" I asked.
Her fingers flew across the keyboard.
"The audit log is changing."
"What do you mean?"
"Someone is deleting the access history in real time."
Luca moved beside her.
"Can you stop it?"
"No."
She stared at the screen.
"Whoever is doing this has executive root credentials."
Vaughn turned toward the hall.
Luca blocked him.
Claire suddenly went still.
"There."
She pointed at one surviving line.
May you like
The account name attached to the deletion request was not Dr. Vaughn's.
It was EVAN.CROSS.
