Chapter 3: Locked Out of His Own Kingdom

Chapter 3: Locked Out of His Own Kingdom
Julian grabbed his phone with shaking hands.
"This has to be a system error."
He refreshed the screen.
Nothing changed.

Another notification appeared.
Executive banking access has been suspended.
His smile vanished.
Vanessa frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means the servers are acting up."
He forced a laugh.
"I'll have IT fix it in five minutes."
She didn't look convinced.
Julian dialed the company's Chief Information Officer.
The call went straight to voicemail.
He immediately called the Chief Financial Officer.
No answer.
Then the Head of Security.
The phone rang twice before someone picked up.
"Mr. Carter."
Julian exhaled.
"Finally."
"I need you to restore my executive access immediately."
There was a pause.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"I no longer have the authority."
Julian frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"All security commands now require approval from Acting Executive Chair Elena Hart."
Julian's jaw tightened.
"There has been a mistake."
"No, sir."
"The order came directly from the Ownership Board."
The line went dead.
Julian stared at the phone.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"What happened?"
He ignored the question.
Instead, he stormed toward the elevator.
"I'm going downstairs."
"The staff knows me."
"They'll fix this."
The elevator doors opened into the grand lobby.
Employees immediately noticed him.
Conversations stopped.
Several staff members lowered their eyes.
No one approached.
Julian walked straight to the front desk.
"I'm locked out of my executive account."
The young receptionist swallowed nervously.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Carter."
"I've received new instructions."
"Only Acting Chair Hart can authorize executive credentials."
Julian laughed.
"Acting Chair?"
"Elena?"
The receptionist nodded quietly.
"Effective immediately."
Julian leaned across the marble counter.
"I own this company."
Before she could answer, the resort's General Manager appeared.
Michael Dawson.
A man who had worked beside Julian for nearly seven years.
Julian smiled with relief.
"Michael."
"Tell her to stop wasting everyone's time."
Michael remained perfectly composed.
"I'm afraid I can't do that."
Julian frowned.
"What?"
"I've received legal instructions from the Ownership Board."
"They are now my highest authority."
Julian's voice became sharp.
"I hired you."
Michael looked him directly in the eye.
"No, sir."
"You interviewed me."
"But I was appointed by Hart Legacy Holdings."
Julian froze.
For years he believed every executive answered to him.
Now he realized they had all answered to someone else.
Someone he had never bothered to identify.
Vanessa tugged at his sleeve.
"Julian..."
"I don't like this."
He forced another confident smile.
"Relax."
"This will be over in an hour."
Just then, four uniformed security officers entered the lobby.
Julian recognized every one of them.
They had protected him for years.
The team leader stepped forward.
"Mr. Carter."
Julian smiled.
"Good."
"Escort these people out of my lobby."
The officers didn't move.
Instead, the captain handed Julian a sealed envelope.
"What is this?"
"Our new instructions."
Julian ripped it open.
Inside was a single page.
Executive Directive 01-A
Effective immediately, all security personnel shall report exclusively to Hart Legacy Holdings.
Former CEO Julian Carter no longer possesses authority over corporate security operations.
Julian looked up.
"This is ridiculous."
The captain spoke respectfully.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"We have to collect your executive identification."
Julian laughed.
"You can't be serious."
The captain extended his hand.
"Your badge, please."
Several guests had gathered nearby.
Whispers spread across the lobby.
"Isn't that Julian Carter?"
"I thought he owned this place."
"What's happening?"
Vanessa's face turned pale.
She hated being embarrassed.
Julian lowered his voice.
"We'll discuss this privately."
"I'm afraid we can't."
The captain remained calm.
"Your access expires in twelve minutes."
Julian's patience snapped.
"You work for me!"
The captain didn't flinch.
"I worked for the company."
"And the company has new leadership."
Julian ripped the executive badge from his jacket.
He threw it onto the marble floor.
"There."
"Happy?"
The captain picked it up carefully.
"Thank you, sir."
Another officer stepped forward.
"We'll also need your master keycard."
Julian hesitated.
That keycard opened every suite.
Every executive office.
Every restricted area.
He had carried it for nearly a decade.
Slowly, he handed it over.
The officer placed it inside a secure evidence pouch.
At that exact moment, every executive door inside the resort automatically relocked.
Julian's access disappeared forever.
Across town, Elena watched the live security feed from Hart Manor.
She hadn't asked for it.
The legal team insisted she observe every transition.
Margaret stood beside her.
"No resistance so far."
Elena nodded.
"I never wanted to humiliate him."
Margaret looked at the screen.
"He humiliated himself."
Victor entered the room carrying another folder.
"There is one final issue."
"What is it?"
"The penthouse."
Elena frowned.
"What about it?"
Victor opened the file.
"The presidential penthouse has always belonged to your family's private trust."
"It has never been company property."
Elena blinked.
"I forgot."
"So did Mr. Carter."
Victor smiled slightly.
"The trust has requested possession."
"When?"
He checked his watch.
"Six o'clock sharp."
Back at the resort, Julian and Vanessa returned to the penthouse.
Vanessa tried using the private wine cabinet.
Locked.
She attempted to access the luxury spa.
Access denied.
The private elevator.
Disabled.
She looked at Julian nervously.
"Why is everything shutting down?"
Before he could answer...
Someone knocked on the suite door.
Three precise knocks.
Julian opened it.
Standing outside were the resort's General Manager...
The Chief of Security...
And a woman in an elegant gray suit carrying a leather portfolio.
She introduced herself without emotion.
"Good morning, Mr. Carter."
"My name is Rebecca Sloan."
"I'm here representing Hart Legacy Holdings."
Julian crossed his arms.
"What do you want?"
She handed him a formal document.
"You and your guest are required to vacate this residence within thirty minutes."
Julian laughed in disbelief.
"This is my penthouse."
Rebecca calmly corrected him.
"No, Mr. Carter."
She pointed toward the gold plaque mounted beside the entrance.
For the first time, Julian actually read the inscription beneath the suite number.
Property Owner: Hart Legacy Residential Trust.
His heartbeat stopped.
May you like
Because in nine years...
He had never once looked at the name engraved on the door he called his own.
