Chapter 10: The Return of a Ghost

Chapter 10: The Return of a Ghost

The room remained silent after Daniel read the itinerary.

Marcus Ellis.

Arrival: 8:00 A.M.

Destination: New York City.

He wasn't hiding.

He was coming back.

Elena stared at the screen.

"Why?"

Victor Lang slowly removed his glasses.

"Because he believes he still has something to win."

Margaret crossed her arms.

"Or someone to confront."

Daniel enlarged the reservation details.

"It gets stranger."

Everyone looked toward the monitor.

"He didn't book a return flight."

Her father frowned.

"So he intends to stay."

Elena felt a knot tighten in her stomach.

Marcus had emptied accounts worth nearly two hundred million dollars.

Any rational person would disappear forever.

Instead...

He was voluntarily returning to the country where every law enforcement agency would be looking for him.

That made no sense.

Unless...

He believed he had protection.

Or leverage.

Daniel opened another encrypted file.

The title read:

Emergency Contingency.

Inside was a single scanned letter.

Marcus had written it himself.

"If I am forced to return..."

"...Phase Four must begin immediately."

No further explanation.

No details.

Just those two sentences.

Victor frowned.

"What exactly is Phase Four?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Across town, Julian sat alone in his hotel room.

The letter from Elena still rested in his hands.

He read it again.

Then again.

Every sentence reminded him of the man he used to be.

The man before magazine covers.

Before billion-dollar headlines.

Before believing every compliment spoken about him.

His phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

He almost ignored it.

Instead, he answered.

"This is Julian."

A familiar voice spoke calmly.

"Good morning."

Julian froze.

"Marcus."

There was a short laugh.

"You sound surprised."

"Where are you?"

"Closer than you think."

Julian stood immediately.

"What have you done?"

Marcus ignored the question.

"I watched the news."

"You've had a difficult couple of days."

Julian clenched his jaw.

"You used me."

Marcus chuckled.

"I gave you exactly what you wanted."

"What does that mean?"

"You wanted to be famous."

"You wanted to be admired."

"You wanted everyone to believe you built an empire."

"I simply made sure they believed it."

Julian gripped the phone tighter.

"You stole everything."

"No."

Marcus replied.

"I reclaimed opportunity."

Julian's voice hardened.

"What are you talking about?"

Marcus became unusually quiet.

"For seventy years..."

"...your wife lived inside a fairy tale."

"My family didn't."

Julian frowned.

"What family?"

Marcus laughed softly.

"You still don't understand."

"Ask Elena about Evelyn Hart."

The line went dead.

Julian immediately tried calling back.

The number no longer existed.

He whispered the unfamiliar name.

"Evelyn Hart..."

At Hart Legacy Headquarters, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered quickly.

"Daniel Reeves."

The caller spoke rapidly.

Daniel's expression changed.

"I'll inform her immediately."

He ended the call.

"What happened?"

Elena asked.

"The airport authority."

"They've confirmed Marcus's plane landed thirty minutes early."

Victor looked toward the clock.

"Where is he now?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No one knows."

Margaret frowned.

"That's impossible."

"The airport has surveillance."

"They do."

Daniel answered.

"But Marcus never exited through the main terminal."

Everyone exchanged uneasy glances.

"He disappeared."

Two hours later...

A black luxury sedan stopped outside Hart Legacy Headquarters.

Security cameras followed its movement.

The driver stepped out.

He opened the rear door.

Everyone inside the security office expected Marcus.

Instead...

An elderly woman emerged.

She appeared to be in her late seventies.

Her silver hair was neatly tied back.

She carried only a leather handbag and a polished wooden cane.

She smiled warmly at the security guard.

"I have an appointment."

The guard checked the visitor list.

"Your name, ma'am?"

She handed him an elegant business card.

He read it once.

Then again.

His face immediately lost color.

Without another word...

He called upstairs.

Daniel entered Elena's office carrying the card.

"I think you should see this."

Elena accepted it.

The name printed in gold lettering made her heart skip.

Evelyn Hart Whitmore

Chairwoman

Whitmore International Trust

Her father stood up so quickly his chair nearly tipped over.

"No..."

Elena looked at him.

"You know her?"

His expression became distant.

"I haven't seen Evelyn in forty-three years."

Victor looked stunned.

"I thought she was dead."

"So did everyone else."

Minutes later...

The boardroom doors opened.

The elderly woman entered without hesitation.

Every person in the room instinctively stood.

Not because they recognized her.

Because of the quiet authority she carried.

She looked directly at Elena.

For several long seconds...

Neither woman spoke.

Finally...

The elderly woman smiled.

"You have your grandmother's eyes."

Elena swallowed.

"Who are you?"

The woman took a slow breath.

"My name is Evelyn."

"I am your grandfather's older sister."

Silence crashed over the room.

Daniel almost dropped his notebook.

Margaret blinked repeatedly.

Victor whispered under his breath.

"Impossible..."

Evelyn looked toward Elena's father.

"You've aged."

He nodded once.

"So have you."

Elena's heart raced.

"My grandfather told us he was an only child."

Evelyn smiled sadly.

"No."

"He was told that."

She slowly sat down.

"Our family buried my name."

"Long before either of you were born."

Elena stared at her.

"Why?"

Evelyn looked out the window.

"Because my father believed daughters shouldn't inherit."

"My brother received everything."

"I received nothing."

The room remained completely silent.

She turned back toward Elena.

"I spent decades building my own fortune."

"I never wanted revenge."

"I simply wanted acknowledgment."

Her eyes became heavy.

"But Marcus..."

She closed them briefly.

"He chose another path."

Elena leaned forward.

"You know Marcus?"

Evelyn nodded.

"He is my grandson."

Every person in the room froze.

The missing branch on the family tree.

The hidden bloodline.

The obsession with ownership.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.

"I came today because I can no longer defend what he has become."

She slowly reached into her handbag.

She removed a sealed envelope.

Then another.

Then a small brass key.

She placed all three items on the conference table.

Elena looked down.

"What are these?"

Evelyn answered quietly.

"The evidence Marcus never wanted anyone to find."

Daniel carefully picked up the first envelope.

His face changed instantly.

"These are original trust documents."

Margaret reached for the second.

She gasped.

"They've been missing for almost fifty years."

Then Elena picked up the small brass key.

A tiny engraved tag hung from it.

Private Vault 317

Hart Union Bank

Evelyn looked directly into Elena's eyes.

Her voice trembled.

"If what's inside that vault still exists..."

"...it will prove who truly betrayed this family."

Before anyone could ask another question...

The conference room television suddenly switched on by itself.

The screen flickered once.

Then twice.

A live video feed appeared.

Marcus Ellis looked directly into the camera.

He smiled.

"Hello, Elena."

"I see my grandmother arrived safely."

He paused.

Then his smile widened.

May you like

"But if you're watching this..."

"...you're already too late."
