Chapter 2: The Meeting That Erased a King

Chapter 2: The Meeting That Erased a King

Julian barely glanced at the notification again.

He was too busy enjoying the applause from investors gathered in the presidential penthouse.

Crystal glasses clinked.

Champagne flowed freely.

A jazz quartet played softly near the panoramic windows.

His mistress, Vanessa, slipped her arm around his waist.

"You seem distracted."

Julian smirked.

"It's nothing."

"Probably another routine board meeting."

Vanessa smiled.

"They can't make a decision without you."

Julian kissed her forehead.

"Exactly."

Across the city, Elena entered the private boardroom inside Hart Manor.

The atmosphere couldn't have been more different.

No music.

No laughter.

No unnecessary conversation.

Only quiet determination.

A massive screen covered one wall.

Small windows appeared one after another.

London.

Singapore.

Dubai.

Zurich.

New York.

Tokyo.

Sydney.

Executive directors from around the world logged into the encrypted meeting.

Every face carried the same serious expression.

Margaret Collins checked her watch.

"All directors are present."

Daniel Reeves closed the boardroom doors.

"They're waiting for your instruction."

Elena remained standing.

She wasn't interested in making a dramatic entrance.

She simply wanted the truth to be recognized.

Her father took a seat near the back of the room.

He deliberately avoided the head chair.

Tonight belonged to Elena.

Margaret spoke first.

"This emergency session has been called under Article Seven of the Hart Legacy Governance Charter."

Every participant nodded.

"The purpose is to review executive misconduct, fiduciary violations, misuse of corporate assets, and potential reputational damage."

No one interrupted.

Margaret clicked a remote.

The first photograph appeared on the screen.

Vanessa walking through the resort lobby wearing Elena's cashmere coat.

The timestamp was from that evening.

The next image appeared.

Vanessa entering the presidential penthouse.

Then another.

The emerald pendant around her neck.

Daniel opened another file.

"The pendant belongs to the Hart Family Historical Collection."

"It has never been transferred."

"It was reported missing six months ago."

Victor Lang folded his hands.

"So Mr. Carter knowingly removed protected family property."

Daniel nodded.

"Correct."

The room remained silent.

Another document appeared.

Corporate credit card statements.

Private jet manifests.

Luxury shopping receipts.

Jewelry purchases.

Vacation expenses.

Every transaction authorized by Julian.

Every purchase benefiting Vanessa.

Margaret looked around the room.

"Total unauthorized expenditures exceed fourteen million dollars."

One director removed his glasses.

"I assume these weren't approved by ownership."

"They were not."

Another director frowned.

"What explanation did Mr. Carter provide?"

Daniel answered calmly.

"He classified them as executive hospitality expenses."

A few executives exchanged disappointed looks.

Elena never spoke.

She simply watched.

She had spent years defending Julian.

Explaining away rumors.

Ignoring warning signs.

Believing promises.

Now she saw everything laid out without emotion.

Facts were harder to argue with than feelings.

Margaret displayed another document.

"This afternoon, Mr. Carter publicly ordered Mrs. Elena Hart Carter removed from company property."

A surveillance video began playing.

Julian's voice echoed through the room.

"This is my resort."

"You don't belong here anymore."

The video ended.

Silence followed.

One elderly director leaned closer to his microphone.

"He said that... to the majority shareholder?"

Margaret answered softly.

"He believed she had no ownership."

Several people shook their heads.

Another executive sighed.

"Unbelievable."

Victor finally spoke.

"There is one more matter."

He placed an old leather folder on the conference table.

"This document has remained sealed for nearly ten years."

He opened it carefully.

Inside rested a handwritten letter.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Elena's grandfather.

Victor read aloud.

"If my granddaughter ever appears before this board because her husband has abused the trust placed in him..."

"...I instruct every director to protect her first..."

"...the family second..."

"...and the business third."

The room became completely still.

Even Elena felt tears threatening her eyes.

She hadn't known the letter existed.

Her grandfather had anticipated this possibility long before his death.

He had hoped he would be wrong.

He wasn't.

Margaret cleared her throat.

"We will now proceed to executive review."

She pressed another button.

Julian's secure video connection appeared.

His face filled the screen.

He looked irritated.

Behind him, the penthouse lights still glowed.

"Can we make this quick?"

"I have guests."

Margaret remained professional.

"Thank you for joining, Mr. Carter."

Julian leaned back confidently.

"What emergency couldn't wait until morning?"

His eyes wandered across the virtual meeting.

Then he noticed unfamiliar faces.

He frowned.

"Who are these people?"

Victor answered.

"The ownership board."

Julian laughed.

"I know every board member."

"No."

Victor replied.

"You know the management board."

A brief silence followed.

Julian's smile faded slightly.

"What does that mean?"

Margaret spoke without hesitation.

"It means you've spent nine years reporting to people you never realized existed."

Julian looked confused.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

Daniel uploaded another document into the meeting.

A detailed ownership chart appeared on everyone's screen.

Layer after layer unfolded.

Holding companies.

Private trusts.

Investment partnerships.

Real estate entities.

International subsidiaries.

Every branch ultimately led to one name.

Hart Legacy Holdings.

Julian stared at the chart.

His confident smile disappeared.

"There must be some mistake."

"There isn't."

"I own Carter Horizon."

Victor answered calmly.

"No."

"You manage Carter Horizon."

Julian laughed nervously.

"Very funny."

Margaret didn't smile.

"According to every legal record in six countries..."

"...you have never owned controlling interest in any company under this organization."

Julian blinked several times.

"Impossible."

Daniel displayed another file.

Julian's employment contract.

Signed nine years earlier.

There it was.

Chief Executive Officer.

Performance-based compensation.

Executive authority.

Zero ownership.

Julian's breathing changed.

"No..."

He leaned closer to the screen.

"No..."

His eyes moved frantically through each page.

"This can't be real."

Across the table, Elena finally spoke.

Her voice remained steady.

"You never read what you signed."

Julian looked directly at her.

For the first time that night...

His confidence cracked.

"What did you do?"

Elena met his eyes without anger.

"I didn't do anything."

"You simply never cared enough to learn whose empire you were standing in."

Julian slammed his hand against the desk.

"This is fraud!"

Victor calmly adjusted his glasses.

"No, Mr. Carter."

"This..."

"...is paperwork."

Before Julian could answer, another notification appeared on his screen.

Executive access suspended pending board review.

Then another.

Corporate banking credentials disabled.

Then another.

Security authorization revoked.

Julian's face turned pale.

He reached for a second phone.

Nothing worked.

A third notification appeared.

Penthouse access expires at 6:00 A.M.

Vanessa looked over his shoulder.

"Julian..."

May you like

Her voice trembled.

"Why are all your cards being declined?"
