Chapter 9: The Face No One Expected

The conference room fell completely silent.

No one looked away from the screen.

The security footage continued playing without sound.

The timestamp read:

October 14.

11:47 p.m.

The executive office was empty.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the door slowly opened.

A man stepped inside.

He moved confidently.

Like someone who had been there many times before.

Margaret paused the video.

The image froze.

Every eye in the room focused on the man's face.

Detective Laura Bennett spoke first.

"Does anyone know him?"

No one answered.

Until Elena did.

"I do."

The room turned toward her.

She looked stunned.

"His name is Thomas Reed."

Edward frowned.

"The former external auditor?"

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Margaret immediately searched the company archives.

A personnel file appeared.

Thomas Reed.

Senior Partner.

Reed & Halston Financial Consulting.

Independent Compliance Auditor.

Contracted for seven consecutive years.

Laura crossed her arms.

"An outside auditor."

"That explains why nobody questioned his access."

Julian stared at the frozen image.

"I remember him."

"He audited our books every year."

"He always said everything looked perfect."

Margaret looked at Julian.

"Apparently..."

"It looked perfect because he made sure it did."

The video resumed.

Thomas walked directly toward Julian's desk.

He didn't hesitate.

He entered a password.

A hidden drawer slid open.

Inside were encrypted backup drives.

Thomas calmly removed one.

Then replaced it with another drive that looked identical.

He closed the drawer.

Locked it.

Straightened a picture frame.

And quietly walked away.

The entire process lasted less than three minutes.

Samuel broke the silence.

"He knew exactly where everything was."

Laura nodded.

"He'd done it before."

Margaret zoomed in on the timestamp.

"This happened the night before the quarterly audit."

Edward slowly exhaled.

"So the evidence disappeared..."

"...before anyone knew it existed."

Julian looked physically ill.

"I never noticed."

Elena answered quietly.

"Because you trusted him."

Julian looked at her.

"I trusted everyone."

She didn't respond.

Not everyone.

Just the people who told him what he wanted to hear.

Laura continued reviewing the video.

"There has to be more."

Margaret searched the drive.

Another recording appeared.

Then another.

And another.

Dozens of hidden surveillance files.

Each one labeled only by date.

The second video began.

Thomas entered the accounting department after midnight.

No security escort.

No questions.

He plugged a laptop into the company's central financial server.

The progress bar slowly filled across the screen.

Upload Complete.

Download Complete.

Then he smiled.

A smile that lasted less than a second.

But it was enough.

Laura pointed toward the monitor.

"Freeze that frame."

The technician enlarged the image reflected in Thomas's laptop screen.

Rows of account numbers became visible.

One account appeared repeatedly.

Blue Crest Consulting.

Elena looked toward Margaret.

"The same company."

Margaret nodded.

"Exactly."

Julian rubbed his forehead.

"So Daniel Mercer wasn't running the operation."

"No."

Laura answered.

"He may have built the system."

"But someone else was using it."

Edward walked slowly around the conference table.

"Where is Thomas Reed now?"

Margaret searched another database.

Her expression changed.

"He retired."

"When?"

"Three years ago."

"Current address?"

She frowned.

"There isn't one."

Laura leaned over the keyboard.

"Social Security?"

"No recent activity."

"Passport?"

"No international travel."

"Driver's license?"

"Expired."

Samuel looked toward Edward.

"It's like he disappeared."

Edward answered quietly.

"People like Thomas don't disappear."

"They prepare."

Meanwhile...

Hundreds of miles away...

A black pickup truck traveled along a deserted mountain highway.

The driver wore sunglasses despite the cloudy weather.

A disposable phone rested in the passenger seat.

It vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

One message.

THEY FOUND THE VIDEO.

The man tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

Without hesitation, he threw the phone out the window.

It shattered against the rocks below.

Back in New York...

Laura replayed the footage again.

Something caught her attention.

"Wait."

She paused the video.

Thomas wasn't alone.

A reflection appeared in the glass wall behind him.

Someone stood outside the office.

Watching.

Only part of the person's face was visible.

Margaret enlarged the image.

The quality was poor.

But one detail stood out.

A distinctive silver ring.

Edward immediately recognized it.

"I've seen that ring before."

Elena looked at her father.

"Where?"

Edward searched his memory.

Then his eyes widened.

"The charity gala."

"Eight years ago."

"He wore it during dinner."

Julian frowned.

"Who?"

Edward answered slowly.

"Our outside legal advisor."

Margaret immediately searched the guest list.

One name appeared.

Charles Holloway.

Senior Corporate Counsel.

External Legal Consultant.

Laura's expression hardened.

"This wasn't one corrupt employee."

"No."

Edward replied.

"This was a network."

Julian slowly sat back down.

Everything he believed he understood about his company was collapsing.

He had blamed himself.

He had blamed Vanessa.

He had blamed Daniel.

Now the list kept growing.

Elena quietly watched him.

She could see the guilt in his eyes.

But she also saw confusion.

Real confusion.

Maybe...

Just maybe...

He hadn't known as much as everyone assumed.

Laura closed the laptop.

"I need arrest warrants."

Margaret nodded.

"I'll have them drafted immediately."

Edward looked toward Samuel.

"Double security."

Samuel didn't ask why.

He simply nodded.

Late that evening...

The Montgomery Estate settled into unusual silence.

Most lights had been turned off.

Only the library remained illuminated.

Elena sat alone with a cup of tea.

Her mother's letter rested beside her.

She reread one sentence.

Never confuse loyalty with silence.

She whispered the words to herself.

Then looked toward the window.

Rain had begun to fall again.

Just like the night everything changed.

A sudden knock echoed through the front door.

Three quick knocks.

Then silence.

Samuel immediately signaled two security officers.

He opened the door cautiously.

No one was there.

Only a sealed envelope lying on the front steps.

Samuel picked it up.

He carefully inspected it.

"No explosives."

"No tracking device."

He carried it inside.

The envelope was addressed to Elena.

She slowly opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Nothing else.

No letter.

No explanation.

The photograph showed Thomas Reed shaking hands with another man outside a private airport hangar.

The picture had clearly been taken with a long-range camera.

Laura looked closely.

"I know Thomas."

She pointed toward the second man.

"But who is he?"

The room remained silent.

Then Julian suddenly stood up.

His face turned white.

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I know him."

Every eye turned toward Julian.

Elena's heart began to race.

Julian swallowed hard before speaking.

May you like

"That's the man..."

"...who introduced me to Vanessa."
