Chapter 7: The Secret Account

Elena barely slept.

The anonymous message lingered in her mind.

You still don't know the whole truth about Julian.

She had spent years uncovering lies.

What else could there possibly be?

Just after sunrise, her phone rang.

The caller ID displayed only one word.

Private.

She answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

A man's voice came through the line.

Calm.

Older.

Careful.

"I have information that belongs to you."

Elena remained silent.

"Who is this?"

"My name isn't important."

"What I know is."

She walked toward the window.

"What do you want?"

"I want the truth to survive."

"What truth?"

The man hesitated.

"Julian's affair wasn't his biggest betrayal."

Elena's heartbeat quickened.

"What are you talking about?"

"There are accounts."

"Hidden accounts."

"They were never reported to the Board."

"They were never reported to your family."

She frowned.

"What kind of accounts?"

"Offshore."

The room suddenly felt colder.

Before she could ask another question, the man spoke again.

"Don't trust email."

"Don't trust text messages."

"I've already mailed the evidence."

"It should arrive today."

The line went dead.

Elena stared at the silent phone.

She didn't know whether to believe him.

But something deep inside told her the call was real.

Downstairs, Edward was already reading the morning financial reports.

He looked up as Elena entered.

"You look worried."

She sat across from him.

"I received another call."

Edward quietly folded the newspaper.

"Tell me everything."

She repeated every word.

Edward listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he leaned back in his chair.

"If it's true..."

He didn't finish the sentence.

"It changes everything."

Margaret Sullivan entered moments later.

She noticed the serious expressions immediately.

"What's happened?"

Edward summarized the call.

Margaret's face hardened.

"I'll notify our forensic accounting team."

Edward nodded.

"And increase security."

"You think this is connected?"

"I never ignore anonymous warnings."

Across town...

Julian sat inside his nearly empty apartment.

Coffee had gone cold on the table.

His phone buzzed every few minutes.

Most calls came from reporters.

Others came from attorneys.

Some came from creditors.

He answered none of them.

Someone knocked on the door.

Three slow knocks.

Julian opened it.

Richard stood outside.

The former CFO looked exhausted.

"You look terrible."

Julian stepped aside.

"So do you."

Richard entered.

Neither man smiled.

"I brought something."

Richard placed a flash drive on the kitchen table.

Julian looked at it.

"What's this?"

"Our backup files."

Julian frowned.

"I thought the investigators took everything."

"They took the official records."

Richard lowered his voice.

"These aren't official."

Julian stared at him.

"What are you saying?"

"There were transactions."

"I followed your instructions."

"I moved money."

Julian's expression changed.

"You destroyed the records."

"I thought I had."

Richard looked away.

"I missed one archive."

Silence filled the apartment.

Julian slowly picked up the flash drive.

"How much?"

Richard answered quietly.

"Approximately seventy-two million dollars."

Julian froze.

"I never took seventy-two million."

Richard finally looked him in the eye.

"No."

"You authorized it."

"You didn't ask where all of it went."

Julian's breathing slowed.

"What do you mean?"

Richard hesitated.

"There were other people involved."

At the Montgomery Estate...

A black courier vehicle arrived through the front gate.

Samuel Hayes inspected the package himself.

No return address.

Only Elena's name.

He carried it directly inside.

Elena carefully opened the thick envelope.

Inside were copies of bank statements.

Wire transfers.

Corporate authorizations.

Shell company registrations.

Most names meant nothing.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Blue Crest Consulting.

She looked at Margaret.

"I've never heard of this company."

Margaret scanned the documents.

"Neither have I."

Edward leaned closer.

"Find out who owns it."

Within minutes, the investigation began.

Montgomery analysts searched international corporate databases.

Nothing.

Blue Crest Consulting didn't officially exist.

Margaret frowned.

"That's impossible."

Edward shook his head.

"No."

"It means someone wanted it to disappear."

An hour later...

A young forensic analyst rushed into the room.

"I found something."

Everyone turned.

"The company isn't active anymore."

"It dissolved four years ago."

Edward stood.

"Who was the registered director?"

The analyst swallowed.

"Vanessa Lawson."

The room fell silent.

Elena stared at the screen.

"Vanessa?"

The analyst nodded.

"Yes."

"But that's not all."

He clicked another document.

Blue Crest Consulting had received more than thirty international transfers.

Every payment originated from Whitmore Hospitality accounts.

Margaret quickly added the totals.

"$31.8 million."

Edward's expression darkened.

"So the affair wasn't only personal."

"It was financial."

Meanwhile...

Vanessa sat alone in a boutique hotel outside the city.

Most of her belongings had been taken.

Her credit cards had stopped working.

She ordered room service.

The server politely smiled.

"I'm sorry, ma'am."

"The payment was declined."

She frowned.

"Run it again."

"I already did."

Vanessa checked her wallet.

Every premium card carried the same message.

ACCOUNT SUSPENDED

She suddenly realized something.

Julian had promised she would always be taken care of.

But Julian no longer controlled anything.

Her phone rang.

Julian.

She answered immediately.

"My cards don't work."

"I know."

"What do you mean you know?"

"They froze everything."

Vanessa's voice became sharper.

"You said we'd be fine."

"I thought we would."

"You promised."

Julian closed his eyes.

"I was wrong."

Vanessa hung up without another word.

Back at Montgomery Capital...

The forensic accounting team projected a world map onto the conference room wall.

Red lines connected dozens of financial institutions.

Switzerland.

Singapore.

Luxembourg.

The Cayman Islands.

The British Virgin Islands.

Money had traveled everywhere.

Margaret studied the pattern.

"This wasn't random."

"No."

Edward agreed.

"Someone designed this."

The analyst enlarged one final transaction.

Date.

Amount.

Authorization.

Recipient.

Every person in the room leaned closer.

The authorization signature belonged to Julian.

The receiving account holder was hidden.

Only the bank could reveal it.

Edward looked at Margaret.

"Get a court order."

"It's already being prepared."

Late that afternoon...

Julian sat staring at the flash drive.

He still hadn't inserted it into his computer.

Part of him didn't want to know.

The other part already feared the answer.

His phone vibrated again.

This time, it wasn't a reporter.

It was Detective Laura Bennett from the Financial Crimes Division.

He answered cautiously.

"Mr. Whitmore?"

"Yes."

"I'm calling to inform you that we'd like to schedule an interview."

Julian swallowed.

"Am I under investigation?"

There was a brief pause.

"At this time..."

"...you're considered a person of interest."

The call ended.

Julian slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time in his career...

This wasn't about losing his title.

Or his fortune.

Or his reputation.

This was about something far more dangerous.

Freedom.

That evening...

Elena stood alone in the archives.

She spread the copied bank statements across a massive oak table.

One document caught her attention.

It wasn't a transfer.

It was a handwritten note tucked between two pages.

Just eight words.

Julian never knew who stole the money.

Elena read the sentence again.

Then a third time.

A chill ran down her spine.

If the note was true...

Then someone had been stealing from the empire...

While Julian believed he was the one in control.

And somewhere...

The real mastermind was still out there.

Watching.

May you like

Waiting.

And making sure everyone blamed the wrong man.
