Chapter 13: The Shadow Above Victor

Chapter 13: The Shadow Above Victor

The handwritten note lay inside an evidence bag.

Stop chasing Victor. He's only the beginning.

Detective Laura Bennett read it one more time.

The handwriting didn't match Thomas Reed's.

It didn't match Victor Langford's known samples either.

Someone new had entered the game.

Or perhaps...

Someone who had been there from the very beginning.

Laura turned toward the lead forensic technician.

"Run every test."

"Handwriting."

"Paper fibers."

"Ink composition."

"I want everything."

The technician nodded.

"It'll take a few hours."

"We don't have a few hours."

At the Montgomery Estate, the mood had changed.

The victory everyone expected after reclaiming the company had disappeared.

Instead, the mansion had become the center of a growing criminal investigation.

Security patrols doubled.

Every entrance was monitored.

Every visitor was screened.

Samuel Hayes personally reviewed every camera feed.

He trusted no one.

Edward stood in his private office, looking out over the estate.

He had spent decades protecting his family's legacy.

Yet somehow...

An enemy had managed to infiltrate nearly every level of the business.

Without firing a single shot.

Elena entered quietly.

"You've been standing here a long time."

Edward smiled faintly.

"Your grandfather used to stand at this window."

"When things became complicated."

"What did he say?"

Edward looked toward the gardens.

"He said..."

"'If you can't see your enemy...'"

"'Look for the person who profits from everyone's mistakes.'"

Elena repeated the words to herself.

"The person who profits..."

Her thoughts immediately returned to Victor.

Then she stopped.

Victor had profited.

But according to the note...

He wasn't at the top.

Meanwhile...

Three states away...

Thomas Reed sat in the back seat of a black SUV.

An oxygen tube remained beneath his nose.

His breathing was still shallow.

The driver never spoke.

Neither did the armed man sitting beside him.

After nearly an hour, the SUV turned through the gates of a secluded mountain estate.

Thomas looked through the window.

His face turned pale.

"No..."

He whispered.

"Not here."

The SUV stopped in front of an enormous stone mansion.

The front doors slowly opened.

A woman in her early sixties stepped outside.

Her silver hair was perfectly styled.

She wore a dark navy suit.

Elegant.

Composed.

Powerful.

She smiled warmly.

"Welcome back, Thomas."

Thomas closed his eyes.

"I hoped you were dead."

The woman laughed softly.

"So did many others."

She introduced herself to no one.

She didn't need to.

Everyone there already knew her.

Her name was Evelyn Blackwood.

Back in New York...

Laura finally received the forensic report.

She hurried into the Montgomery Estate's conference room.

"We have a match."

Edward looked up.

"To the note?"

Laura nodded.

"The handwriting belongs to someone already in our database."

Margaret leaned forward.

"Who?"

Laura placed a file on the table.

The name at the top made everyone freeze.

Daniel Mercer.

Elena looked stunned.

"Daniel?"

Laura nodded.

"He wrote the note."

"So he helped Thomas escape?"

"Most likely."

Samuel frowned.

"I thought Daniel disappeared."

Laura answered,

"He did."

"But not voluntarily."

She opened another folder.

"We recovered fingerprints from Thomas's abandoned hospital room."

"One belonged to Daniel."

"The other..."

She paused.

"...belongs to someone we've never identified before."

Julian entered the room at that moment.

He had been called in as soon as the report arrived.

Laura handed him the unidentified fingerprint profile.

Julian studied it for only a few seconds.

Then his expression changed.

"I've seen this file."

Everyone looked at him.

"When?"

"Years ago."

"It came across my desk."

"It was part of a background investigation."

Margaret frowned.

"Who was being investigated?"

Julian swallowed.

"I don't remember the name."

"But I remember one detail."

"What?"

"The report wasn't about hiring someone."

"It was about making sure nobody ever looked into them again."

Silence filled the room.

Edward folded his hands.

"Can you recover the report?"

Julian nodded slowly.

"Maybe."

"I backed up some executive files before everything collapsed."

Laura looked at him.

"Where?"

"My old storage unit."

Samuel immediately stood.

"I'll send a team."

Julian shook his head.

"No."

"I have to go."

Laura objected.

"You're still under investigation."

"I know."

"But if someone else finds that file first..."

"...it disappears forever."

Edward considered the situation.

Finally, he nodded.

"Samuel goes with you."

"And so do two detectives."

"No exceptions."

Julian agreed.

Two hours later...

The convoy arrived at a secure storage facility on the outskirts of the city.

The manager recognized Julian immediately.

"I heard about everything."

Julian gave a tired smile.

"I'm sure you did."

He unlocked Unit 317.

Dust filled the air as the metal door rolled upward.

Inside were dozens of labeled archive boxes.

Awards.

Blueprints.

Old contracts.

Family photographs.

A forgotten life.

Julian searched quickly.

Finally...

He found a gray document case marked:

Executive Security Reviews

His heartbeat accelerated.

"This is it."

Before he could open the case...

Samuel suddenly raised his hand.

"Nobody move."

Everyone froze.

One detective whispered,

"What is it?"

Samuel pointed toward the floor.

A nearly invisible fishing line stretched across the entrance.

Attached to it...

A small explosive device.

The room went silent.

Julian stared in disbelief.

"That wasn't here before."

Samuel nodded.

"I know."

He slowly backed everyone away.

Laura immediately called the bomb squad.

"No one touches anything."

Twenty minutes later...

The device was safely disarmed.

The lead technician looked at Samuel.

"It wasn't designed to destroy the building."

"What was it designed to do?"

The technician held up a small metal cylinder.

"Destroy paper."

Julian looked toward the document case.

Someone hadn't wanted to kill him.

Someone wanted to erase whatever was inside.

After the area was declared safe, Julian carefully opened the case.

Most files were ordinary.

Routine background checks.

Travel clearances.

Executive security briefings.

Then...

One sealed envelope.

Stamped:

CONFIDENTIAL

AUTHORIZED EYES ONLY

Julian opened it.

A single photograph slipped onto the table.

Everyone leaned closer.

The picture showed Victor Langford standing beside Evelyn Blackwood.

Between them stood a much younger Daniel Mercer.

All three were smiling.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written one sentence by hand.

Never forget who built the first illusion.

Below the sentence...

There was a signature.

Not Victor's.

Not Evelyn's.

Not Daniel's.

Just two elegant initials.

A.C.

Laura stared at the letters.

Edward slowly took the photograph.

His face lost all color.

Elena immediately noticed.

"Dad..."

"You know those initials."

Edward didn't answer right away.

When he finally spoke...

His voice was barely a whisper.

"I was afraid of this."

Elena stepped closer.

"Who is A.C.?"

Edward looked at his daughter with a mixture of disbelief and dread.

May you like

"The only person..."

"...my father ever admitted he couldn't outsmart."
