Chapter 3: The Name He Never Asked About

Julian stood frozen in the center of the lobby.

The television screen faded back to the resort's welcome display.

The announcement was over.

The silence it left behind was far louder.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Every employee waited to see what their former CEO would do next.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Julian..."

He didn't look at her.

"There has to be a mistake."

She forced a smile.

"Exactly."

"We'll call the lawyers."

"We'll fix this."

Julian slowly shook his head.

"No."

"This wasn't a mistake."

His voice had lost its usual confidence.

"This was planned."

Across the lobby, two housekeeping employees whispered to each other.

"Did you know?"

"No."

"But my supervisor always said there were invisible owners."

"I thought it was just another corporate rumor."

"So did I."

Julian turned toward the concierge desk.

"Get me every legal document connected to this property."

The concierge hesitated.

"I'm sorry, sir."

"I no longer report to you."

Julian slammed his palm onto the marble counter.

"I said get them."

Before anyone could respond, another voice interrupted.

"You should leave."

Julian turned.

Standing beside the revolving doors was Michael Grant.

The resort's General Manager.

For seven years, Michael had answered to Julian.

Today, everything had changed.

Julian laughed bitterly.

"You're throwing me out now?"

Michael remained calm.

"I've received direct instructions from the Board."

"I'm required to escort unauthorized individuals off company property."

"Unauthorized?"

Julian stared at him in disbelief.

"You've got to be kidding."

"I wish I were."

Vanessa stepped in front of Julian.

"You can't treat him like this."

Michael looked at her politely.

"Ma'am."

"I'm asking both of you to leave peacefully."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"We're staying."

Michael reached into his jacket.

He removed a sealed envelope.

"This arrived for Mr. Whitmore at six this morning."

Julian snatched it from his hand.

His name was printed neatly across the front.

Inside was a single page.

No signature.

No greeting.

Just one sentence.

Your occupancy privileges ended at 6:00 a.m. Please collect your personal belongings within thirty minutes.

Julian read it twice.

Then a third time.

His hands began to shake.

Meanwhile...

Elena stood inside the Montgomery Archives.

The room resembled a private museum more than a business office.

Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling.

Leather-bound ledgers lined every wall.

Historic photographs filled elegant frames.

Some were more than a century old.

Edward walked beside her.

"Your grandfather spent fifty years building this collection."

Elena smiled softly.

"I used to hide in here when I was little."

"I know."

"You always believed nobody could find you."

She laughed for the first time in days.

"You always did."

Edward stopped in front of an old black-and-white photograph.

A magnificent hotel overlooked the Mediterranean Sea.

"This was the first Montgomery resort."

Elena studied the image.

"It looks familiar."

"It should."

"The architecture inspired nearly every property Julian ever built."

She looked at him.

"You let him copy it."

Edward nodded.

"I wanted to see whether he would ask where the original came from."

"He never did."

"No."

"He preferred admiration over curiosity."

Elena walked farther into the archive.

Her eyes stopped on another photograph.

A young woman stood beside Edward.

She wore a white summer dress.

She couldn't have been older than twenty-five.

"My mother."

Edward smiled.

"She loved these resorts more than anyone."

Elena gently touched the frame.

"I still miss her."

"So do I."

The quiet moment was interrupted by Edward's assistant.

"Sir."

Edward turned.

"What is it?"

"The media has picked up the story."

"How widespread?"

"National."

"And growing internationally."

Edward simply nodded.

"Expected."

Across every major business network...

Breaking news banners filled television screens.

Financial analysts scrambled for answers.

No one had expected the Montgomery name to emerge.

Few people even knew it existed.

That was exactly how Edward preferred it.

Julian sat alone inside a private conference room at a nearby law office.

Three attorneys surrounded the table.

Stacks of paperwork covered every surface.

The lead attorney adjusted his glasses.

"I've reviewed everything."

Julian leaned forward.

"Well?"

"The ownership documents appear legitimate."

"There has to be a loophole."

"I'm afraid not."

"I built that company."

"You managed it."

"I owned it."

The attorney slowly slid one document across the table.

"No."

"You didn't."

Julian stared at the paperwork.

At the bottom of every page appeared the same name.

Montgomery International Holdings.

He looked up.

"Who are they?"

The attorney took a deep breath.

"They've quietly owned controlling interests in luxury hospitality assets for nearly forty years."

"Forty?"

"They rarely appear in public."

"They don't seek attention."

"They acquire land."

"They finance development."

"They allow other people to become the face of the business."

Julian felt his stomach tighten.

"So... I was never the owner."

"No."

"You were the operating executive."

Julian pushed back from the table.

"No."

"This can't be real."

The attorney remained silent.

Julian stood.

"I married Elena."

"Yes."

"Her last name wasn't Montgomery."

The attorney looked uncomfortable.

"She legally changed it after your wedding."

Julian froze.

His mind raced.

He tried to remember.

How many times had he asked about her family?

Almost never.

She had never spoken much about them.

And he had never cared enough to ask.

At that same moment...

Elena sat in her father's library.

A fire crackled softly in the fireplace.

She held an old photo album on her lap.

Edward handed her another cup of tea.

"You've been quiet."

"I'm remembering."

"The good memories?"

She smiled sadly.

"The ones I thought were good."

She opened the album.

The first photograph showed her and Julian standing on an empty stretch of coastline.

Neither of them wore expensive clothes.

Neither of them had security.

Neither of them had wealth.

Just dreams.

Julian held a rolled-up blueprint.

She remembered that day perfectly.

"I told him this beach would become the most beautiful resort in the world."

Edward nodded.

"And it did."

"I believed we were building it together."

She closed the album.

"I didn't realize I was handing him my family's legacy."

Edward looked at her carefully.

"Do you regret hiding the truth?"

She thought for a long moment.

"I regret believing that love could survive unchecked ambition."

Edward didn't answer.

Because he had learned that lesson decades earlier.

Back at the law office...

Julian's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

"Hello?"

A calm female voice responded.

"Mr. Whitmore."

"Who's this?"

"I'm calling on behalf of the Montgomery Family Trust."

Julian's heartbeat quickened.

"I want to speak to Elena."

"I'm afraid that won't be possible."

"I deserve answers."

"You'll receive them."

"When?"

"There will be a formal board hearing tomorrow morning."

Julian frowned.

"A hearing?"

"Your executive conduct during the past nine years is under review."

"What does that mean?"

"It means every financial decision you've made..."

"...every executive action..."

"...every transfer of company assets..."

"...and every use of corporate funds..."

"...will be examined."

The line went silent for a moment.

Then the woman added one final sentence.

"If I were you, Mr. Whitmore..."

"...I would hire the best attorney money can buy."

The call ended.

Julian slowly lowered the phone.

One of his lawyers looked at him.

"What happened?"

Julian swallowed hard.

"They're auditing everything."

The attorney's face turned serious.

"Everything?"

Julian nodded.

Neither man spoke again.

Because both of them understood the same terrifying possibility.

If the board looked closely enough...

They might discover far more than an affair.

And somewhere inside the Montgomery estate...

Elena stood at the window, watching the evening sun disappear behind the mountains.

For the first time in nearly a decade...

May you like

She wasn't wondering whether Julian would come home.

She was wondering how much of the truth he could survive.
