Chapter 8 - The Trust Clause.

By sunrise, Lily Carter’s name had been searched more than a million times.

Daniel knew because his communications team sent him the number despite being told not to.

People who had never met her called her a thief.

Others called her a home-wrecker.

Anonymous accounts posted photographs taken from her old social media pages.

Someone published the neighborhood where her mother lived.

Daniel read three comments and stopped.

Lily read none of them.

At least that was what she told Claire.

Daniel knew she was lying because he saw her sitting in the west hallway at six in the morning with her phone turned facedown beside her.

Ethan slept against her shoulder.

She looked exhausted.

Daniel sat across from her.

“I am getting the articles removed where I can.”

Lily nodded.

“You do not have to explain.”

“I do.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You did not publish them.”

“My family did this to you.”

“Serena did this.”

“We do not know that.”

Lily gave him a tired look.

“You sound like Detective Ortiz.”

“She is usually right.”

“I know.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“I need you to leave the estate for a few days.”

Lily’s expression hardened instantly.

“No.”

“Listen.”

“I am listening.”

“You were attacked here.”

“Evidence was planted in your things here.”

“Someone accessed your room here.”

“I can move Ethan with you.”

That changed her expression.

Daniel continued.

“Claire has a condo with private security.”

“No staff.”

“No shared access system.”

“Marcus can secure it.”

Lily looked down at Ethan.

“If he goes, I go.”

“That is the plan.”

Serena’s voice came from the doorway.

“You are taking my stepson away with the woman the police just questioned?”

Daniel stood.

Serena wore a white blouse and dark trousers.

She looked composed enough for television.

Her attorney stood behind her.

Daniel realized that was probably intentional.

“You paid Rosa to lie.”

Serena’s face did not move.

“Rosa is desperate for attention.”

“You withdrew the cash found in Lily’s locker.”

“That was household money.”

“Why was it in her locker?”

“I have no idea.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Paul confessed.”

That did it.

Serena’s eyes widened before she could stop them.

Peter Cole touched her elbow.

“Do not respond.”

Daniel watched her.

“You did not know he survived the crash.”

Serena recovered.

“I did not even know he had been in a crash.”

Another lie.

Daniel had not told her the crash occurred.

He had only said Paul confessed.

Claire appeared at the top of the stairs.

She had heard it too.

Serena realized the mistake.

Her face flushed.

Cole spoke sharply.

“This conversation is over.”

Daniel let them leave.

He no longer needed Serena to confess in a hallway.

He needed her to keep making mistakes.

At nine, Olivia Grant arrived with a copy of the Mercer-Stanton trust.

She spread the documents across the library table.

Detective Ortiz attended unofficially because the trust itself was not yet evidence in a criminal case.

Marcus stood near the door.

Claire brought coffee no one drank.

Lily stayed upstairs with Ethan.

Olivia pointed to Section Twelve.

“This is the incapacity clause.”

Daniel had read it before.

This time, every word felt weaponized.

“If Daniel is found unable to perform fiduciary duties due to medical or psychological incapacity, Richard becomes acting sole trustee pending review.”

Claire folded her arms.

“How long can pending review last?”

“Potentially months.”

“And during that time?”

“He can make ordinary investment decisions.”

Daniel looked at Olivia.

“Define ordinary.”

“That is where the problem begins.”

She turned several pages.

“The trust permits private placements within broad risk limits.”

“Richard’s funds?”

“Possibly.”

Daniel swore quietly.

Olivia continued.

“But there is another clause.”

She pointed lower.

“If Daniel were removed for misconduct involving Ethan, the family court could also review his parental fitness.”

Claire stared at her.

“So Serena makes him look violent.”

“Richard makes him look unstable.”

“They take control of the money and potentially influence custody.”

Olivia nodded.

“That is one theory.”

Daniel thought of the slap.

Serena had provoked no physical response before that day.

Had she been waiting for one?

The thought did not excuse what he had done.

It made the moment even more useful to her.

He looked at Ortiz.

“She wanted me to hit her.”

Ortiz did not agree.

“She may have expected you to lose control.”

“That is not the same as making you do it.”

Daniel accepted the correction.

“I know.”

Olivia turned to another document.

“This is more troubling.”

She placed a photocopy on top of the trust.

Daniel recognized his signature.

At least, it looked like his signature.

“What is that?”

“A draft resignation as co-trustee.”

Daniel stared.

“I never signed this.”

Olivia nodded.

“I did not think so.”

Claire leaned closer.

“It looks real.”

“It is a scanned signature.”

Olivia pointed to the pixelation.

“Someone lifted it from another document.”

“Where did you get this?”

Olivia looked at Marcus.

“An anonymous email last night.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Anonymous?”

“It contained three pages from something called Blue Harbor.”

Everyone in the room went still.

Paul had used the same name.

Ortiz immediately asked for the email headers.

Olivia handed over a printed technical report.

“The sender hid the origin.”

“But the files are real enough to examine.”

The second page was a draft affidavit from Serena.

It described Daniel as emotionally volatile, frequently absent, and dangerously attached to alcohol after Amelia’s death.

The third page was a proposed statement from Paul claiming Daniel had once left Ethan alone for hours.

Daniel looked at the date.

It had never happened.

On that date, Daniel had been in the nursery with Ethan all afternoon because the baby had a fever.

Lily had been there too.

“They were manufacturing witnesses.”

Ortiz nodded.

“Looks that way.”

Daniel’s phone rang.

Richard Mercer.

Every person in the room saw the name.

Ortiz held up one finger.

“Answer.”

Daniel did.

“Richard.”

His uncle’s familiar voice came through warm and concerned.

“Daniel, I have been trying to reach you.”

“You ignored me yesterday.”

“I was in meetings.”

Daniel looked at Ortiz.

She motioned for him to continue naturally.

Richard sighed.

“I saw the news.”

“You need to get control of this before the board gets nervous.”

Daniel almost admired the nerve.

“My son was hurt.”

“Yes.”

“And that is terrible.”

“But you cannot let a domestic employee manipulate you into destroying your marriage.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What do you know about Lily?”

“Only what Serena told me.”

Across the room, Claire silently mouthed liar.

Daniel continued.

“What did Serena tell you?”

“That the girl is unstable.”

The word again.

Daniel felt Ortiz watching him.

“Richard, did you ever meet Grace Holloway?”

Silence.

Only one second.

But it was there.

“Who?”

“The nanny before Lily.”

“I may have seen her.”

“Did you threaten her?”

Richard’s voice changed.

“Daniel, you are exhausted.”

“Did you help Serena threaten her?”

“You need to stop.”

“Did you?”

Richard exhaled.

“This is exactly what I was afraid of.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“What were you afraid of?”

“You becoming irrational.”

There it was.

Richard continued.

“You hit your wife.”

“You are hiding your child with an employee.”

“You are accusing family members of conspiracies.”

“If the board hears you like this, they will have questions.”

Daniel looked at Olivia.

She wrote one word on a legal pad.

PRESSURE.

Daniel changed direction.

“Did Serena hurt Ethan?”

Richard answered too fast.

“She was never supposed to hurt the boy.”

The room froze.

Richard froze too.

Daniel said nothing.

The silence became unbearable.

Then Richard tried to repair the sentence.

“I mean, if anything happened, obviously nobody wanted that.”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Nobody?”

“Daniel.”

“Who is nobody?”

Richard hung up.

Ortiz immediately saved the recording authorized under Illinois law because Daniel had consented as a party to the call.

Claire stared at the phone.

“He just admitted there was a plan.”

Ortiz remained careful.

“He admitted knowledge of something he says did not include hurting Ethan.”

“That is important.”

Daniel’s phone rang again.

This time it was Margaret.

He answered.

His mother was crying.

“Daniel, I need to see you.”

“Where are you?”

“At my apartment.”

“What happened?”

There was a long pause.

“I found your bracelet.”

Daniel frowned.

“My what?”

“The leather bracelet Amelia gave you when Ethan was born.”

Daniel had thought it was lost months ago.

Margaret’s voice broke.

“It was inside an envelope Serena asked me to hide.”

Daniel stood.

“What else is in the envelope?”

His mother started crying harder.

“A key.”

“To what?”

“I do not know.”

“And a note from Amelia.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

“What note?”

May you like

Margaret whispered the first line.

“Daniel, if anything ever happens to me, do not let Richard control Ethan’s future.”
