Chapter 11 - The Empty Crib.

For seventeen seconds, Daniel Mercer forgot how to breathe.
He remembered the exact number later because the security footage from Marcus’s temporary cameras showed him standing in the nursery doorway for seventeen seconds before his body began moving again.
Lily reached the terrace first.
She picked up Ethan’s gray blanket with both hands.
“Ethan!”
Daniel ran past her into the garden.
The terrace opened onto three acres of hedges, stone paths, and old oak trees.
Beyond them stood the carriage house and the service drive.
Marcus shouted into his radio.
“Seal every exit.”
Detective Ortiz called for additional units.
Claire searched the downstairs rooms even though everyone knew Ethan was not there.
Margaret stood in the foyer repeating his name like a prayer.
Daniel ran toward the service drive.
A groundskeeper pointed toward the east gate.
“I saw a black SUV.”
“When?”
“Maybe two minutes ago.”
“Who was driving?”
“I could not see.”
“Did you see a child?”
The man shook his head.
Daniel nearly collapsed from the force of helplessness.
Then Lily grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.”
He turned.
She was holding Ethan’s blanket close to her chest.
“Look at the corner.”
A small white thread was caught in the fabric.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
“This is not his blanket.”
Everyone froze.
Lily unfolded it.
Ethan’s gray blanket had blue stitching around the edge.
This one had white.
“They staged this.”
Daniel’s mind snapped back into focus.
“Why?”
“To make us think he went outside.”
Marcus understood first.
“He may still be in the house.”
They turned as one.
Ortiz immediately redirected officers inside.
Every room was searched.
Closets.
Bathrooms.
Storage spaces.
The basement wine room.
The attic stairs.
Nothing.
Lily stood in the central hall, trying to think like someone who knew the mansion.
Then she looked toward the service elevator.
“It was not called.”
Marcus checked the indicator.
The elevator showed basement level.
Daniel frowned.
“No one uses the basement entrance anymore.”
Lily ran.
The basement corridor led to an old delivery tunnel built when the estate was renovated twenty years earlier.
Daniel had forgotten it existed.
Paul had not.
The tunnel connected the mansion to the detached garage beneath the carriage house.
Marcus opened the steel door.
Fresh tire marks crossed the garage floor.
A black SUV space was empty.
Daniel’s stomach dropped again.
The blanket had been a diversion, but Ethan had still been taken.
“Camera?”
Marcus shook his head.
“Old garage network.”
“Disconnected last year.”
Lily looked at him.
“By Paul?”
Marcus nodded.
Daniel called Paul from the hospital corridor through Ortiz’s phone.
Paul answered on the second ring.
“Where does the tunnel exit?”
“Carriage garage.”
“We know.”
“What vehicle did Serena have access to?”
Paul hesitated.
“There is an old black Range Rover registered to the estate.”
“Plate?”
Paul gave it.
Ortiz broadcast the vehicle information immediately.
Daniel turned toward Lily.
Her face was pale but focused.
“Why would Serena take him?”
Lily answered without hesitation.
“Because everything else is gone.”
“The story.”
“The evidence.”
“Your family.”
“She has one thing left that matters to you.”
Daniel’s knees weakened.
Ortiz looked at him sharply.
“Do not assume she intends to hurt him.”
Daniel stared at her.
“How can you say that?”
“Because panic makes people do things for leverage.”
“If she wanted the child harmed, she had opportunities before.”
Lily’s face tightened at the truth of that sentence.
Ortiz continued.
“We treat this as an abduction and we find him.”
Daniel nodded.
He forced himself into the role everyone needed.
“What does Serena know about places connected to the family?”
Claire joined them.
“The lake house.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Richard’s?”
“No.”
“Dad’s old one.”
The Mercer family had owned a lake house near Lake Geneva for decades.
After Daniel’s father died, the property sat mostly unused.
Richard kept a key because he occasionally inspected it.
Serena had attended one family weekend there before the wedding.
Daniel called Ortiz’s attention to it.
She sent Wisconsin authorities to check.
They did not rush there blindly.
They coordinated.
They pulled traffic cameras.
They checked toll records.
They confirmed the Range Rover had crossed north less than twenty minutes earlier.
Daniel wanted to drive.
Ortiz refused.
“You are not turning this into a chase.”
“My son is in that car.”
“And we are going to get him back.”
“You stay with me.”
Lily stepped closer to Daniel.
“She is right.”
He turned on her.
“You want me to stand here?”
“I want you to be alive and useful when Ethan comes back.”
The sentence stopped him.
Daniel hated it.
He obeyed it.
They moved to the security office, where highway cameras were routed to a police liaison.
At 12:24 p.m., the Range Rover appeared at a gas station north of the state line.
The driver wore a baseball cap.
The passenger seat looked empty.
Then the rear door opened.
Serena stepped out.
Daniel leaned toward the screen.
She opened the back door.
For one unbearable second, the camera angle blocked the interior.
Then Serena lifted Ethan from a car seat.
He was alive.
He was awake.
He was crying.
Lily’s hand closed around Daniel’s wrist.
“There.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
Serena carried Ethan inside the gas station.
The driver remained in the vehicle.
Marcus zoomed the footage.
The driver turned his head.
Daniel recognized him from Richard’s Christmas party.
Gavin Shore.
The consultant Paul had named.
Police units moved toward the station, but the SUV left before they arrived.
The clerk reported that Serena had bought diapers, milk, and a prepaid charger.
She had not threatened anyone.
She had looked terrified.
That detail mattered to Ortiz.
“She is improvising.”
Daniel did not care why.
“I want my son back.”
At 1:08, Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Ortiz activated the recording system.
Daniel answered.
“Serena.”
Her voice shook.
“You finally sound scared.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Is Ethan safe?”
“He is fine.”
“Let me hear him.”
A pause.
Then Daniel heard Ethan fussing softly.
His chest broke open.
“Bring him home.”
Serena laughed, but the sound was unstable.
“Home?”
“You searched my office.”
“You let that nanny destroy my life.”
“You destroyed your life.”
Ortiz motioned for Daniel to stay calm.
He swallowed his anger.
“What do you want?”
“I want Richard to fix this.”
Daniel looked at Ortiz.
“What does that mean?”
“He promised me protection.”
“From what?”
“From you.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“You took my child.”
“He is my stepson.”
“You have no right to take him.”
Serena’s breathing became ragged.
“You do not understand.”
“Then explain it.”
For several seconds, only road noise came through.
Then Serena whispered.
“Richard said if I held everything together until the hearing, I would be protected.”
“What hearing?”
“The emergency petition.”
Daniel looked at Olivia.
She went pale.
“What petition?”
Serena answered.
“To remove you from the trust.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow.”
Daniel felt the entire scheme accelerating.
Richard intended to file while Daniel appeared to be in the middle of a domestic scandal.
Serena continued.
“He said the nanny would be charged.”
“He said your board would force you to step aside.”
“He said nobody would care about anything else.”
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“And Ethan?”
Serena did not answer.
“Did Richard tell you to hurt him?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Lily closed her eyes.
Daniel continued.
“Did anyone tell you to be rough with him?”
Serena’s voice cracked.
“No.”
“That was you.”
Silence.
Daniel felt sick.
Serena finally whispered.
“He would not stop crying.”
Lily turned away.
Daniel gripped the desk until his knuckles whitened.
“Where are you?”
“You know where.”
The call ended.
Ortiz immediately ordered units toward the Mercer lake house.
The phone trace confirmed a tower near Lake Geneva.
Daniel looked at her.
“I am going.”
This time she did not refuse.
“You ride with us.”
The drive north was silent.
Lily came because Serena had repeatedly centered her in the conflict and because Ethan responded to her voice.
Claire stayed behind with Margaret and Olivia.
Marcus rode with a second vehicle.
At 2:46 p.m., police established a perimeter two roads away from the lake house.
The Range Rover was parked outside.
Gavin Shore was visible through a side window.
Serena was not.
Neither was Ethan.
Then an officer handed Ortiz binoculars.
“Movement on the dock.”
Daniel took them.
Serena stood at the end of the wooden dock with Ethan in her arms.
She was not near the water’s edge.
She was simply staring across the lake.
Ethan’s head rested against her shoulder.
Lily whispered.
“She is waiting for someone.”
Daniel lowered the binoculars.
A black sedan appeared on the road behind the police perimeter.
It slowed.
Then stopped.
The driver stepped out with both hands visible.
May you like
Daniel recognized the silver hair before the man even turned.
Richard Mercer had arrived.
