Chapter 7 - The Voice in the Hospital Room.

Paul Danner looked twenty years older than he had the last time Daniel saw him.
A bandage crossed his forehead.
His left arm was secured against his chest.
Machines blinked quietly beside the hospital bed.
Detective Ortiz stood near the window.
A Wisconsin state trooper remained outside the door.
Daniel entered alone because Paul had insisted on it.
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Paul finally looked away first.
“I am sorry.”
Daniel pulled a chair beside the bed.
“That word is not going to do much today.”
“I know.”
“Why did you run?”
Paul closed his eyes.
“Because Richard called me.”
Daniel’s pulse quickened.
“When?”
“Yesterday morning.”
“What did he say?”
“He said the house was about to become a crime scene.”
“He told me to leave before the police started asking questions.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“And you obeyed him.”
Paul gave a broken laugh.
“I have been obeying him for almost a year.”
Daniel felt the anger rise.
“Start at the beginning.”
Paul stared at the ceiling.
“Richard came to me a few weeks after Amelia died.”
Daniel’s hands tightened.
“He said you were barely functioning.”
“That part was true.”
“He said the estate needed someone to make sure nothing fell apart.”
“I thought he meant bills, staff, schedules.”
“Then he started asking for access.”
“To what?”
“Security logs.”
“Employee records.”
“Your travel calendar.”
“Why?”
Paul swallowed.
“He said you needed privacy while you recovered.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You believed that?”
“At first.”
“What changed?”
“Serena.”
Daniel waited.
“She started coming around more.”
“At first she said she was helping with Amelia’s unfinished charity work.”
“Then Richard asked me to make sure she could enter the house without being announced.”
Daniel felt sick.
He remembered being grateful that Serena always seemed to arrive when he was most overwhelmed.
Now he understood why.
“She did not accidentally become part of my life.”
Paul’s eyes filled with shame.
“No.”
Daniel stood and walked to the window.
Traffic moved below the hospital in indifferent lines.
“Did Richard tell her to marry me?”
“I never heard him say that.”
“Did you hear them discuss me?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Paul took a painful breath.
“Like a project.”
Daniel turned back.
Paul continued before he could ask.
“They talked about your schedule.”
“Your moods.”
“When you slept.”
“When you drank.”
“What made you angry.”
Daniel’s face went cold.
“Why?”
“Richard wanted documentation that you were emotionally unstable.”
There was the word again.
Daniel sat down slowly.
“For the trust.”
Paul nodded.
“He said if you ever became unable to serve as trustee, he would protect Ethan’s inheritance.”
“Protect it from who?”
“From you.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“Richard had been pushing me to approve investments I did not like.”
Paul looked surprised.
“What investments?”
“Private funds controlled by his partners.”
Paul’s expression changed.
“That is what this was about.”
Daniel felt the shape of the scheme come into focus.
Richard did not merely want the trust.
He wanted access to deploy its money.
“What was Serena supposed to do?”
Paul looked away.
“Keep you dependent on her.”
“Isolate you.”
“Record arguments.”
“Make staff complaints about your temper.”
Daniel remembered three staff resignations Serena had blamed on his mood after Amelia died.
He had apologized to employees for behavior he could barely remember.
Had those incidents been manufactured too?
“And Ethan?”
Paul’s face tightened.
“He was never supposed to be part of it.”
Daniel went still.
“That is what you meant when you said Serena did not start this.”
“Yes.”
“Richard started it.”
“Yes.”
“But Serena hurt my son.”
Paul closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“How long did you know?”
Paul did not answer.
Daniel stood.
“How long?”
“Since Grace.”
The room seemed to contract around them.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“You knew for almost a year.”
Paul’s eyes filled.
“I told Richard she was getting rough with the baby.”
“And?”
“He said she was under pressure.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Pressure.”
“I should have gone to you.”
“Yes.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was Lily.”
Daniel’s voice cracked with anger.
“She still stood between Serena and Ethan.”
Paul flinched.
Daniel forced himself to sit again because he did not trust his own body.
“Did you plant the bracelet?”
Paul nodded.
Margaret’s bracelet.
The one that had turned his own mother against Lily.
“Serena gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Yesterday morning.”
“She said Lily was about to accuse her.”
“She told me to put it in the bag.”
“Why did you do it?”
Paul began crying quietly.
“Richard said if I stopped cooperating, he would make sure I went down for the security breaches.”
Daniel felt no sympathy yet.
“Did you plant the money?”
“No.”
“The brooch?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“I do not know.”
Daniel believed that part because Paul looked genuinely confused.
“Did you attack Lily in the nursery?”
Paul’s head snapped toward him.
“No.”
“I was already in Wisconsin.”
Ortiz had confirmed the timing.
Daniel continued.
“Who else did Richard use?”
Paul hesitated.
“His driver.”
“A consultant named Gavin Shore.”
“And maybe Rosa.”
“The maid?”
“She owed money.”
“Serena paid some of her debts.”
Daniel thought of the false statement claiming Lily had entered Margaret’s bedroom.
“Where is Rosa now?”
“I do not know.”
Paul looked toward Ortiz.
“Can I have protection?”
Ortiz stepped closer.
“That depends on how much truth you are giving us.”
Paul nodded weakly.
“There is a file.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What file?”
“Richard kept calling it Blue Harbor.”
“Where?”
“I never saw the whole thing.”
“Serena had copies in the study safe.”
Daniel frowned.
“My study safe?”
“No.”
“Her private study.”
Serena had converted Amelia’s old morning room into an office after the wedding.
Daniel had avoided the room because it still reminded him of Amelia.
That had made it the perfect place to hide something from him.
“What is in Blue Harbor?”
Paul’s voice dropped.
“Draft medical declarations.”
“Statements from staff.”
“Trust papers.”
“And videos of you.”
Daniel felt sick.
“Videos doing what?”
“Arguing.”
“Drinking after Amelia died.”
“Breaking a glass once.”
Daniel remembered the night.
He had dropped a tumbler after receiving one of Amelia’s final medical bills.
Serena had comforted him while a camera apparently watched.
Paul continued.
“They were building a record.”
“For what?”
“To petition the court if they ever needed to.”
“To say grief had made you unable to manage Ethan’s assets.”
Daniel’s voice was almost inaudible.
“How close were they?”
Paul looked at him.
“Richard wanted to file within the next month.”
Daniel understood why the pressure had suddenly intensified.
The planted jewelry.
The deleted cameras.
The attempts to frame Lily.
Something about the schedule had accelerated.
“What changed?”
Paul closed his eyes.
“Richard learned you planned to remove him as trustee.”
Daniel frowned.
“I never told anyone that.”
“But you asked your lawyer to review the trust last month.”
Daniel had.
He had begun questioning Richard’s investment proposals.
His lawyer had requested the removal provisions.
Richard had somehow learned.
Paul looked at him.
“That scared him.”
Daniel stood.
He had heard enough.
As he reached the door, Paul called his name.
“Daniel.”
Daniel turned.
Paul’s face was gray.
“I did not know Serena would hurt Ethan.”
Daniel held his gaze.
“You knew after Grace.”
Paul looked down.
Daniel opened the door.
“That is the part you will have to live with.”
Outside the room, Ortiz stopped him.
“We can use a lot of this.”
“Can you arrest Richard?”
“Not yet.”
“Serena?”
“We are closer.”
Daniel’s phone began vibrating.
Claire.
He answered.
“Lily is being released.”
Daniel exhaled.
“The cash?”
“The bank video shows Serena making the withdrawal.”
“And the maid’s statement is falling apart.”
“How?”
“Rosa called Ortiz’s office.”
Daniel looked at the detective.
Ortiz’s eyebrows rose.
Claire continued.
“She says she lied.”
“Why?”
“Serena paid her.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
There it was.
Another piece.
Then Claire’s voice changed.
“Daniel, there is something else.”
“What?”
“Someone sent the story to the press.”
Daniel went still.
“What story?”
“The version where you assaulted Serena because you are having an affair with Lily.”
Daniel looked through the hospital window at his reflection.
Within minutes, his phone began lighting with messages from board members, reporters, and relatives.
The lie was spreading faster than the truth.
At the bottom of one article was a photograph of Lily carrying Ethan outside the hospital.
The headline called her Daniel Mercer’s secret lover.
The woman who had protected his son was now being publicly destroyed for it.

And when Daniel opened the article, he saw the source credited in one sentence.
A close family friend.
