Chapter 12 - The Lake House.

Richard Mercer looked offended by the police presence.
That was the first thing Daniel noticed.
Not frightened.
Not confused.
Offended.
He stepped away from the black sedan wearing a navy overcoat and expensive leather gloves.
An officer ordered him to remain beside the vehicle.
Richard raised both hands with theatrical patience.
“I am an attorney for the trust.”
Olivia, who had joined by video call from Chicago, laughed when Ortiz repeated that claim.
“Richard is not an attorney.”
“He is a trustee.”
Ortiz relayed the correction.
Richard’s expression barely changed.
He asked to speak to Daniel.
Ortiz refused at first.
Daniel insisted.
They met within the police perimeter under supervision.
Richard looked older than he had two days earlier.
Or perhaps Daniel was simply seeing him clearly for the first time.
“You need to tell Serena to come inside.”
Daniel stared at him.
“My son is on that dock because of you.”
Richard sighed.
“This is not the place for accusations.”
Daniel almost admired the arrogance.
“Paul confessed.”
Richard’s eyes changed.
“Grace recorded you.”
No response.
“We found Blue Harbor.”
Richard looked toward the lake.
Daniel continued.
“And Amelia left me a file.”
That did it.
Richard slowly turned back.
“What file?”
Daniel felt the answer before he heard it.
The first thing Richard cared about was not Ethan.
Not Serena.
Not the police.
The file.
“Why?”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“What did Amelia leave?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Enough.”
Richard looked toward Ortiz.
Then back to Daniel.
“You do not understand what she thought she found.”
“She found your undisclosed interests.”
“Perfectly legal partnerships.”
“That you wanted to place trust money into.”
“Good investments.”
“That paid you.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“You sound like her.”
Daniel felt the insult beneath the sentence and almost smiled.
“Good.”
Richard lowered his voice.
“Daniel, Serena is unstable.”
Daniel laughed once.
“You built an entire plan around calling everyone else unstable.”
“Lily.”
“Me.”
“Amelia when she questioned you.”
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“Be careful.”
“There it is.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“The threat.”
“The thing you use when charm stops working.”
Ortiz stepped nearer.
Richard looked toward the dock again.
“I did not tell Serena to take Ethan.”
“But you came here.”
“She called me.”
“What did she ask for?”
Richard did not answer.
Daniel understood.
“Money?”
Silence.
“Protection?”
Richard’s mouth tightened.
“She is frightened.”
“She should be.”
Richard looked at Daniel with something almost like pity.
“You think Lily is innocent because she cries at the right moments.”
Daniel’s anger flashed.
“Do not say her name.”
“You are proving my point.”
Daniel stepped back before Richard could bait him further.
He would not give his uncle another clip for Blue Harbor.
On the dock, Serena shifted Ethan from one arm to the other.
Lily stood behind a police vehicle thirty yards away.
She watched Ethan carefully.
“He is tired.”
Ortiz looked at her.
“How can you tell?”
“He is rubbing his ear against her shoulder.”
“He does that before he falls asleep.”
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
Even now, Lily knew what his son needed.
Ortiz’s negotiator spoke to Serena by phone.
Serena refused to come inside unless Richard joined her.
Police refused to send Richard onto the dock.
The standoff lasted twenty-six minutes.
No one shouted.
No weapons appeared.
The danger was emotional uncertainty.
Daniel found that worse.
Finally, Lily asked to speak to Serena.
Daniel turned.
“No.”
Lily looked at him.
“She called me.”
“She wants me involved.”
“That is exactly why you should stay away.”
“Ethan knows my voice.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Ortiz considered it.
“We can put her on the phone.”
Lily nodded.
The negotiator connected the call.
Serena answered immediately.
“What?”
Lily’s voice was calm.
“Is Ethan asleep?”
Serena looked down at the baby.
“Almost.”
“He needs the blue pacifier when he is that tired.”
Serena’s shoulders stiffened.
“I know how to care for him.”
Lily did not challenge her.
“It should be in the side pocket of the diaper bag.”
Serena looked toward the bag on the dock bench.
She found it.
Ethan settled slightly.
Daniel watched with tears in his eyes.
Lily continued.
“He is cold when the wind comes off the lake.”
“There is a knit blanket in the bottom.”
Serena wrapped it around him.
For the first time, her posture softened.
Lily’s voice remained steady.
“He does not know why everyone is upset.”
“He only knows the people around him feel different.”
Serena closed her eyes.
“You think you are better than me.”
“No.”
“Yes, you do.”
“No.”
Lily swallowed.
“I think he deserves better than what happened in that house.”
Serena’s eyes filled.
“You took him from me.”
Lily answered carefully.
“I did not take anything from you.”
“You never loved me.”
The sentence was not about Lily.
Everyone heard it.
It was about Daniel.
Lily glanced at him, then looked back toward the dock.
“This is not about whether Daniel loves you.”
“It is about Ethan being safe.”
Serena began crying silently.
Not the polished tears she had used in the foyer.
These were exhausted and ugly and real.
“I did everything Richard asked.”
Richard shouted from behind the police line.
“Stop talking.”
Every officer turned toward him.
Serena did too.
Her expression changed.
Daniel saw it from thirty yards away.
The dependency broke in real time.
Serena stared at Richard.
“You said you would protect me.”
Richard took one step forward.
An officer blocked him.
“Serena, do not say another word.”
Ortiz looked at Daniel.
“That was helpful.”
Serena’s voice rose.
“Helpful?”
She laughed through tears.
“He told me Daniel would eventually fall apart.”
“He told me to keep records.”
“He told me which arguments to start.”
Richard shouted again.
“She is lying.”
Serena pointed toward him from the dock.
“You gave me the cameras.”
“You gave me the files.”
“You told Paul what to delete.”
Richard’s face went gray.
Ortiz signaled to two officers.
They moved closer to him.
Serena kept talking.
“He promised me a percentage when the trust money moved into Blue Harbor.”
Daniel stared at Richard.
There was the financial link.
Serena continued.
“And when Lily started writing things down, he told me to get rid of her.”
Lily’s face tightened.
Daniel’s voice was barely audible.
“Did he tell you to hurt Ethan?”
Serena looked at him across the distance.
“No.”
Her answer came immediately again.
“That was me.”
The honesty was almost worse than an excuse.
Serena looked down at the sleeping baby in her arms.
“He cried.”
“I was angry.”
“I wanted everything quiet.”
“I wanted him to stop needing her.”
Lily closed her eyes.
Serena’s shoulders shook.
“I hated that he reached for Lily.”
“I hated that he cried when I walked into the nursery.”
Daniel felt sick.
She had punished a baby for being afraid of her.
Serena whispered.
“And every time he pulled away, I got angrier.”
Daniel forced himself not to move.
The negotiator spoke gently.
“Serena, bring Ethan to the house.”
Serena looked toward Richard.
He was now being held several yards back by officers.
His face was furious.
For the first time, he could not control the room.
Serena looked at Daniel.
“You hit me.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“I should not have.”
She seemed surprised by the answer.
Daniel continued.
“I will not excuse it.”
“But I will not let you use my failure to erase what you did to Ethan.”
Serena stared at him.
Then she looked at Lily.
Lily held out her empty hands.
“Bring him here.”
Serena took one step.
Then another.
She walked slowly up the dock.
No one rushed her.
When she reached the grass, Lily moved forward only after Ortiz gave permission.
Serena hesitated.
Ethan stirred.
His eyes opened.
He saw Lily.
Both hands reached toward her.
The reaction destroyed the last of Serena’s composure.
She began sobbing.
Lily took Ethan carefully.
The baby buried his face against her shoulder.
Daniel stepped in and wrapped both of them in his arms for one brief second.
He did not care who saw.
Serena stood two feet away looking at the family she had tried to control.
Ortiz approached her.
“Serena Mercer, turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
Serena did not resist.
As the cuffs closed, she looked at Daniel.
“There is one thing Richard never told you.”
Richard shouted from behind them.
“Do not listen to her.”
Serena smiled through tears.
Daniel felt the next disaster coming.
“What?”
Serena looked directly at Richard.
“He knew about Amelia’s letter before she died.”
Richard’s face changed.
Serena continued.
“He knew she planned to remove him from the trust.”
Daniel stared at his uncle.
Richard said nothing.
May you like
Serena’s smile disappeared.
“And the night before Amelia went to the hospital, Richard asked me to steal the letter.”
