Months passed.
Lauren focused entirely on preparing for her baby's arrival.
She repainted the nursery.
Finished every doctor's appointment.
Started laughing again.
Daniel continued paying every expense without argument.
He attended parenting classes alone.
He sent letters instead of text messages.
Sometimes Lauren read them.
Most of the time she didn't.
One afternoon he asked if they could meet in the park.
She agreed.
He looked thinner.
Older.
"I'm not asking you to take me back," he said.
"I know I've lost that right."
She remained silent.
"I only want one chance."
"To do what?"
"To be a good father."
Lauren looked down at her growing belly.
"Our child deserves two parents who love them."
Daniel nodded.
"I'll spend the rest of my life proving I can at least be one of those."
For the first time, she believed he was sincere.
But sincerity couldn't erase betrayal.
