Chapter 7 - The Hearing Before Sunrise.

Elena did not sleep.

Hope woke every two hours, and each feeding became the only part of the night that felt real.

Luka's attorneys worked in the dining room downstairs.

Megan wrote a detailed statement describing the false transfer request, the missing chart, and the stolen newborn sample.

At three in the morning, a second nurse from St. Catherine's called Megan privately.

Dana Wells had been found.

She was alive.

She was also terrified.

“Where?” Luka asked.

Megan put the call on speaker.

“In a motel near the airport.”

The other nurse whispered as though someone might hear her.

“Dana says she never came back into the hospital after her shift.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Then who took Hope's blood?”

“No one knows.”

Luka's attorney, Rebecca Shaw, looked up from her laptop.

“Can Dana testify remotely tomorrow?”

“She says no.”

“Why?”

“She received pictures of her children at school.”

The room went silent.

Elena looked at Hope sleeping in her arms.

Fear turned into anger so clean it almost steadied her.

“They're threatening everyone.”

Luka nodded.

“Which means the evidence matters.”

Rebecca leaned forward.

“The custody hearing is narrow.”

She spoke carefully.

“Do not try to prove the entire M-17 conspiracy tomorrow.”

Elena stared at her.

“Ryan is using the conspiracy to take my child.”

“Yes.”

“And you want me to ignore it?”

“I want you to win the question actually before the judge.”

Rebecca tapped the filing.

“Are you a capable mother who voluntarily left a hospital after being presented with suspicious medical instructions, or are you unstable and being controlled by an unrelated man?”

Elena looked at Luka.

“Unrelated isn't exactly true.”

Rebecca's eyebrows lifted.

Luka gave Elena a questioning look.

She nodded.

“Tell her.”

By four in the morning, Rebecca knew everything Elena knew.

She did not react to the one-hundred-eighty-six-million-dollar trust.

She did react to Luka being Elena's half brother.

“Can you prove that?”

“The sealed panel may prove it,” Luka said.

“May?”

“We haven't opened it.”

Rebecca stared at them both.

“Why not?”

Elena told her about Thomas's instruction and Ryan's plea.

Rebecca leaned back.

“So the condition has been satisfied.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are we waiting?”

Elena looked toward Hope.

“Because I want to know what Ryan is afraid of before I show him what I know.”

Rebecca considered that.

“You're learning quickly.”

Elena did not feel clever.

She felt betrayed.

Morning arrived gray and cold.

The hearing was held by emergency video conference because Elena had given birth less than twenty-four hours earlier.

Judge Maria Alvarez appeared on a large screen in Luka's study.

Ryan sat in a conference room at his attorney's office.

Vanessa was not visible.

Dr. Hall sat beside Ryan.

The judge reviewed the petition.

“Mr. Keller, you are requesting emergency temporary custody of a newborn who is currently nursing and whose mother was discharged less than one day ago.”

Ryan's attorney nodded.

“We are requesting immediate protective supervision, Your Honor.”

“Based on what immediate danger?”

“Mrs. Keller left medical care under the influence of a man she had never met.”

Rebecca spoke calmly.

“Mr. Moretti is not unrelated to my client.”

Ryan looked sharply at his screen.

The judge raised an eyebrow.

“Explain.”

Rebecca glanced at Elena.

Elena answered herself.

“He is my half brother.”

Ryan's face changed.

Dr. Hall looked stunned.

The judge leaned closer.

“Did you know that before leaving the hospital?”

“No.”

“Do you have reason to believe it is true?”

“Yes.”

“Documented reason?”

“Yes.”

Rebecca uploaded Thomas's letter and the depository access instructions.

Ryan's lawyer objected.

The judge overruled him for the limited purpose of determining Elena's state of mind.

Then Megan testified.

She described the erased chart.

She described the transfer to sublevel two.

She described the access log showing Vanessa Cross's account.

Dr. Hall shifted in his chair.

Ryan's attorney attacked Megan's credibility.

“You abandoned your shift to accompany a patient off hospital property.”

“I reported a compromised medical record.”

“You are not an information-security specialist.”

“No.”

“Then you cannot know the system was compromised.”

Megan looked directly into the camera.

“I know St. Catherine's does not deliver newborns to boiler rooms.”

Even Judge Alvarez looked momentarily surprised.

Then Dr. Hall testified.

He claimed sublevel two had been selected as a temporary clinical staging area during a systems outage.

Rebecca asked for documentation.

He had none.

She asked when the area had been inspected for newborn care.

He did not know.

She asked who authorized the transfer.

He said hospital administration.

“Which administrator?”

Hall paused.

“I don't recall.”

Rebecca waited.

“Was it Malcolm Cross?”

Ryan's attorney objected.

Dr. Hall answered before the judge ruled.

“No.”

Rebecca's eyes narrowed.

“I didn't ask whether you spoke to him.”

Hall went still.

The judge noticed.

So did everyone else.

The hearing changed after that.

Ryan was called.

Rebecca asked why he left the hospital.

“I believed Elena needed space.”

“With your girlfriend?”

Ryan's attorney objected.

Judge Alvarez allowed the question.

Ryan looked down.

“Yes.”

“When did you return?”

“About forty minutes later.”

“Why?”

“I was concerned.”

“About Elena?”

“Yes.”

“Or about Box 17?”

Ryan looked at the camera.

The silence lasted four seconds.

It felt like a confession.

His attorney stepped in.

“Your Honor, this has nothing to do with immediate custody.”

Rebecca nodded.

“I agree.”

Ryan's attorney looked confused.

Rebecca continued.

“It has everything to do with motive for filing this petition.”

She uploaded the message Elena had seen on Ryan's phone.

DID MORETTI OPEN BOX 17?

Ryan's attorney requested a recess.

Judge Alvarez denied it.

“Mr. Keller, did you know about this depository box before your wife did?”

Ryan swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Did you tell her?”

“No.”

“Did you know it was connected to the birth of your child?”

Ryan hesitated.

“Yes.”

Judge Alvarez's expression cooled.

“Yet your petition describes Mr. Moretti's appearance as unexpected and suspicious.”

“It was suspicious.”

“Was it unexpected?”

Ryan said nothing.

“Mr. Keller?”

“No.”

Elena closed her eyes.

There it was.

He had known Luka might come.

The judge denied Ryan's emergency request.

She ordered Hope to remain with Elena.

She directed both parents not to remove the child from the state without notice.

She also referred the hospital-record allegations to an independent medical privacy investigator.

Ryan looked stunned.

Elena should have felt victorious.

Instead, she felt empty.

The hearing ended.

Luka's team exhaled.

Megan hugged Elena carefully.

Then Rebecca's phone buzzed.

She read the message twice.

“What?” Luka asked.

Rebecca turned the screen around.

St. Catherine's had reported Megan Parker for unauthorized release of confidential records.

Megan's face fell.

“They're firing me.”

“Not yet,” Rebecca said.

Elena's phone buzzed next.

A message from Vanessa.

I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE CUSTODY PETITION.

Another appeared.

RYAN IS LYING TO BOTH OF US.

Then a third.

MEET ME WITHOUT LUKA.

I'LL SHOW YOU WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR FATHER.

After Judge Alvarez denied Ryan's request, Elena remained seated in front of the dark screen.

Everyone around her began talking at once.

Rebecca discussed preservation orders.

Megan worried about her job.

Luka coordinated security.

Elena heard none of it for several seconds.

Hope had slept through the hearing in a bassinet beside the desk.

Elena leaned down and touched the tiny back beneath the blanket.

“You have no idea what people are arguing about because you exist.”

Hope breathed softly.

That innocence made Elena furious on her behalf.

A newborn should not have to activate trusts, archives, lawsuits, or old men's fears.

She should only have to eat, sleep, cry, and be held.

Elena made herself a promise.

Whatever M-17 became, Hope would never be told she owed anyone for protecting her.

Not Elena.

Not Luka.

Not Ryan if he ever became worthy of the word father.

Protection would be a duty, not a debt.

When Vanessa's messages arrived, Elena almost deleted them.

Then she remembered Thomas's notebook.

Evidence first.

Emotion later.

She screenshot every message and sent copies to Rebecca.

Only then did she answer.

ONE MEETING.

MY TERMS.

Vanessa replied immediately.

AGREED.

Elena looked at Luka.

He frowned.

She smiled faintly.

“You told me to watch what people do when they think I am not watching.”

May you like

“I regret teaching you anything.”

“Too late.”
