Chapter 3 - The File That Wasn't Supposed to Exist.

Ryan denied having any envelope.

He denied knowing what M-17 meant.

He denied that Vanessa had entered Elena's medical chart for any reason beyond concern.

By the time the locked fire doors reopened, Elena no longer believed a single sentence that came from his mouth.

Luka moved her into a private consultation room with a glass wall overlooking the nurses' station.

Megan stayed with them.

Ryan and Vanessa were kept outside while hospital security reviewed the electronic lock failure.

Dr. Hall disappeared.

No one seemed to know where he had gone.

Elena sat in a padded chair with Hope sleeping against her chest.

The baby seemed impossibly peaceful in the middle of everything.

Luka stood near the door, reading the access logs again.

“You said my father gave you something.”

Luka looked up.

“He did.”

“Then start talking.”

“You need rest.”

Elena laughed once.

“If you say I'm emotional, I will throw this water pitcher at you.”

Megan covered a smile.

Luka nodded.

“Fair.”

He pulled a chair across from Elena and sat.

“I met Thomas Bennett eighteen years ago.”

Elena frowned.

“I was seven.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because he had your picture in his wallet.”

Elena's anger paused.

Luka continued.

“I was twenty-two and stupid enough to think being strong meant nothing could happen to me.”

“What happened?”

“I was working private security overseas.”

He touched the scar beneath his ear.

“I came home injured and ended up in an emergency unit where your father was consulting.”

“My father was a pediatric geneticist.”

“He was also a physician who didn't walk past people who needed help.”

That sounded like Thomas Bennett.

Elena's throat tightened.

“He treated you?”

“He did more than that.”

Luka leaned forward.

“He recognized my last name.”

“Moretti?”

“Yes.”

“And that mattered because?”

Luka was silent for a moment.

“Because your father had spent seven years looking for my family.”

Elena felt a chill move across her arms.

“Why?”

Luka looked at Hope.

“Because you were connected to us.”

Elena's heartbeat seemed to stop between one second and the next.

“How?”

“I didn't know then.”

“You know now.”

“Yes.”

“Tell me.”

Luka's jaw tightened.

“Not until I can prove it.”

Elena stood too quickly.

Pain shot through her body.

Megan reached for her.

“Easy.”

“No.”

Elena braced one hand against the table.

“I have spent six years thinking my father died with secrets I would never understand.”

She stared at Luka.

“You walk in here, sign my daughter's paperwork, tell me someone is erasing us, and now you want me to wait?”

Luka absorbed every word without interrupting.

Then he reached into the inner pocket of his jacket.

He removed a sealed plastic sleeve.

Inside was a small key.

A number was stamped into the metal.

17.

“Your father mailed this to me three days before he died.”

Elena stared at it.

“With instructions?”

“One sentence.”

“What sentence?”

Luka looked directly at her.

“When Elena has a child, open the box before Cross does.”

Megan whispered, “Cross?”

“Malcolm Cross,” Luka said.

Vanessa's father.

Elena sat again because her knees no longer felt trustworthy.

“My father knew Vanessa's father?”

“They worked in the same research program here in 2001.”

“The year I was born.”

“Yes.”

Elena looked toward the glass wall.

Ryan paced outside, speaking urgently into his phone.

Vanessa stood several feet away, watching the room.

“Where is the box?”

Luka turned the key between his fingers.

“First National Depository.”

“In the city?”

“Three blocks away.”

“Then let's go.”

Megan shook her head immediately.

“You gave birth this morning.”

“I noticed.”

“You are not walking three blocks.”

Luka stood.

“You're not going anywhere until I know who's controlling the exits.”

Elena opened her mouth to argue.

The consultation-room door opened.

Ryan entered without permission.

“Enough.”

Luka stood between him and Elena.

Ryan looked past him.

“Elena, we need to talk alone.”

“No.”

“This man is filling your head with nonsense.”

“You had a prenatal DNA test done without telling me.”

Ryan's face tightened.

“It was for insurance.”

“Then why is M-17 written on it?”

“I don't know.”

“Why did Vanessa access my chart eleven times?”

“She was checking on you.”

“She's not my doctor.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“Elena, you need to stop.”

There was something familiar in his tone.

Not concern.

Control.

She suddenly remembered every argument where he had told her she was overreacting until she apologized for being hurt.

She remembered every bill he insisted on handling.

Every password he changed.

Every time he discouraged her from visiting her mother because “stress wasn't good for the pregnancy.”

Her marriage rearranged itself in her memory.

Not as isolated moments.

As a pattern.

“What did you marry me for?” she asked.

Ryan stared at her.

“What kind of question is that?”

“A simple one.”

“I married you because I loved you.”

Luka looked toward the glass.

Vanessa had stopped pacing.

She was listening.

Elena followed his gaze.

“Then why is your girlfriend terrified of a box my father hid twenty-five years ago?”

Ryan's head turned sharply.

Vanessa stepped back.

That was enough.

Elena's heart sank.

“You do know about it.”

Ryan moved toward the door.

Luka blocked him.

“Stay.”

“Get out of my way.”

“Not until Elena finishes asking questions.”

“This is my wife.”

“No.”

Elena's voice was quiet.

Ryan looked at her.

She held Hope closer.

“You walked away.”

Ryan's face changed.

For the first time, he looked less angry than afraid.

“Elena.”

“You made your choice.”

Ryan's phone buzzed.

He glanced down reflexively.

Luka saw the screen.

“What did it say?”

Ryan locked the phone.

“Nothing.”

Luka stepped closer.

“Show her.”

Ryan laughed.

“You don't give orders here.”

Elena extended her free hand.

“Give me the phone.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Ryan looked at her for a long moment.

Then the phone buzzed again.

This time the preview appeared before he could hide it.

Elena saw only part of the message.

But it was enough.

DID MORETTI OPEN BOX 17?

The sender's name was Vanessa.

Elena looked through the glass wall.

Vanessa was still holding her own phone.

Ryan realized what Elena had seen.

“Elena, listen to me.”

She did not.

She turned to Luka.

“Take me to the box.”

Luka nodded.

Ryan's face went white.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

Ryan tried to recover.

“You can't leave the hospital.”

“Watch me.”

“Elena, if you open that box, you don't know what you'll destroy.”

Her anger became something colder.

“What will I destroy, Ryan?”

He had no answer.

Luka opened the consultation-room door.

Vanessa stepped back.

Megan found a wheelchair.

Elena sat with Hope in her arms.

They had moved less than ten feet when Megan's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed instantly.

“What do you mean she never arrived?”

Elena looked up.

“Who?”

Megan listened.

Then lowered the phone slowly.

“The nurse who collected Hope's newborn blood sample.”

“What about her?”

“She was supposed to deliver it to the lab twenty minutes ago.”

Megan looked at Luka.

“She never got there.”

Luka's eyes hardened.

“What's her name?”

“Dana Wells.”

Luka pulled out his phone.

Megan shook her head.

“You don't understand.”

“What?”

“Dana finished her shift at seven this morning.”

Elena stared at her.

“But she was in my room after eight.”

Megan nodded slowly.

“That's the problem.”

The woman who had taken Hope's blood had not been scheduled to be inside the hospital at all.

Before they left for the depository, Megan brought Elena a clean hospital robe and helped her change.

The ordinary act nearly broke her.

Her body hurt.

Her hands shook from exhaustion.

Milk had begun to soak through the front of the gown.

No conspiracy changed the fact that she had delivered a baby that morning.

Megan fastened the robe gently.

“You are allowed to be overwhelmed by normal things too.”

Elena looked at her in the mirror.

“I don't remember what normal is.”

“You will.”

Outside the bathroom, Luka was on the phone arranging a private exit.

He spoke in clipped phrases and never raised his voice.

Elena listened to him direct people without humiliating them.

It was such a small contrast with Ryan that she hated noticing it.

When she emerged, Luka looked away immediately while she adjusted the blanket around her shoulders.

He handed her a pair of soft shoes.

“My operations manager guessed the size.”

“They're ugly.”

“I'll fire him.”

Elena almost smiled.

Then Ryan's message appeared on her phone again.

COME HOME BEFORE YOU MAKE THIS WORSE.

The old Elena would have reread it until she wondered whether she truly was making everything worse.

This time she deleted nothing and replied with only one sentence.

I AM GOING TO LEARN WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW.

The typing indicator appeared.

Then vanished.

May you like

No answer came.

That silence gave her more confidence than any denial could have.
