Chapter 2 - Ink on the Father Line.

Elena refused to let anyone take Hope from her arms.
The nurse on the phone repeated the transfer request twice.
Megan kept saying there had to be a mistake.
Luka did not believe in mistakes that arrived seconds after twenty-five-year-old medical records vanished.
“Hang up,” he told her.
Megan looked offended.
“I work here.”
“Then you know sublevel two is mechanical storage.”
Megan hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
She hung up.
Within thirty seconds, a hospital administrator appeared at the far end of the corridor.
He was a thin man in a navy suit with a badge that read DR. PETER HALL, CHIEF OF PATIENT SERVICES.
Two security officers followed him.
Elena felt Hope stir against her chest.
Luka stepped slightly in front of them.
Dr. Hall forced a polite smile.
“Mrs. Keller, we've had a minor systems problem.”
“Elena Bennett,” Luka said.
Dr. Hall looked at him.
“I beg your pardon?”
“She hasn't changed her identity because her husband put a ring on her finger.”
Elena glanced at Luka.
The words were strangely comforting.
Dr. Hall's smile tightened.
“Mr. Moretti, this is a medical matter.”
“Then explain the transfer request.”
“A precaution.”
“To a mechanical floor?”
Dr. Hall stopped smiling.
Megan shifted beside Elena.
“Doctor, I checked the directory.”
Dr. Hall ignored her.
“Mrs. Keller, may we speak privately?”
“No.”
The answer came from Elena before fear could stop it.
Dr. Hall's eyes sharpened.
“Your husband has contacted us.”
Elena's stomach dropped.
“He says you're distressed and refusing appropriate care.”
Luka gave a quiet humorless laugh.
“Of course he did.”
Dr. Hall looked at the clipboard.
Then his face changed.
“Who signed that?”
“I did,” Luka said.
“You have no authority to do that.”
“Then correct it through the proper process.”
“That document is invalid.”
“Good.”
Luka stepped closer.
“Then you won't mind preserving it as evidence.”
The word evidence changed the temperature in the hallway.
Dr. Hall glanced toward the security officers.
One of them seemed suddenly interested in the floor.
Elena understood what Luka had done.
He had not signed the form because he believed ink could magically make him Hope's father.
He had signed it because deleting a routine record was easy.
Disputing a witnessed document carrying the name of a major security executive was not.
“You knew they would come,” Elena said.
Luka looked at her.
“I hoped they wouldn't.”
“That's not an answer.”
“No.”
His voice lowered.
“I knew someone was watching your delivery.”
Elena's skin prickled.
“Who?”
Luka glanced toward Dr. Hall.
“That's what I'm trying to find out.”
Dr. Hall took another step forward.
“Mrs. Keller, your daughter needs to be evaluated.”
“She was evaluated twenty minutes ago.”
“Circumstances changed.”
“What circumstances?”
He did not answer.
Instead, a familiar voice sounded behind him.
“Elena.”
Ryan had returned.
Vanessa stood beside him.
This time she was not pretending to be a friend.
Her hand was looped through Ryan's arm.
Elena felt something inside her harden.
Ryan looked from Luka to the clipboard.
“What is he doing here?”
Luka faced him.
“Staying.”
Ryan's mouth curled.
“Who are you?”
“Luka Moretti.”
Ryan's expression changed for half a second.
It was small.
But Elena saw it.
Recognition.
Fear.
Then it vanished.
“You know him,” Elena said.
Ryan looked at her.
“No.”
“You just reacted to his name.”
“Because everybody knows Moretti.”
Vanessa remained silent.
Luka watched her instead of Ryan.
“You're Vanessa Cross.”
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“And you're making a scene in a maternity ward.”
“You're Malcolm Cross's daughter.”
Elena looked between them.
“Who is Malcolm Cross?”
No one answered immediately.
Megan did.
“He used to be chief medical officer here.”
“Used to?”
“He's on the hospital board now.”
Luka nodded.
“And twenty-five years ago, he ran neonatal research.”
Vanessa's face lost color.
Ryan stepped toward Elena.
“This man is manipulating you.”
“You left me three hours after I gave birth.”
“I needed space.”
“With her?”
Ryan's eyes flicked toward Vanessa.
“That has nothing to do with Hope.”
“Then hold your daughter.”
Ryan froze.
Elena extended the baby slightly.
“Go ahead.”
Ryan looked at Hope as though Elena had handed him a test he had not studied for.
He did not move.
That hesitation hurt more than his leaving.
Luka watched him carefully.
“You knew about the test,” Luka said.
Ryan's face hardened.
“What test?”
“The prenatal sample collected at eleven weeks.”
Elena stared at her husband.
“What prenatal sample?”
Ryan said nothing.
Vanessa looked at him.
That was the second reaction Elena noticed.
Luka reached into his jacket and removed a folded laboratory requisition.
Elena recognized Ryan's signature at the bottom.
Her hands began to shake.
“You had a DNA test done?”
Ryan swallowed.
“It was routine.”
“No, it wasn't.”
Elena's voice came out sharper than she expected.
“You never told me.”
Ryan stepped closer.
“Elena, you're exhausted.”
“Stop saying that like it makes me stupid.”
Megan looked away to hide a flicker of approval.
Luka handed Elena the requisition.
The sample type read MATERNAL BLOOD / FETAL FRACTION.
A handwritten note appeared beneath the order number.
M-17 cross-check required.
Elena's throat tightened.
She looked at Luka.
“What does M-17 mean?”
“Not here.”
Ryan moved suddenly.
He reached for the paper.
Luka caught his wrist before his fingers touched it.
The movement was fast but controlled.
No punch.
No shouting.
Just absolute refusal.
“Don't,” Luka said.
Ryan pulled his arm back.
“You think tattoos and a security company make you important?”
“No.”
Luka's gaze remained steady.
“The documents do.”
Vanessa stepped in.
“This is ridiculous.”
She looked at Dr. Hall.
“Do something.”
Dr. Hall looked suddenly trapped.
Elena noticed it.
So did Luka.
“Why would she expect you to take orders from her?” Luka asked.
Dr. Hall's face tightened.
“She doesn't.”
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“I didn't mean it that way.”
Luka turned to Megan.
“Can you print the access log for Elena's chart?”
Megan hesitated.
Dr. Hall answered for her.
“No.”
Luka smiled without warmth.
“That wasn't your question.”
Megan looked at Elena.
Elena nodded.
“Please.”
Megan walked to the nurses' station.
Dr. Hall followed.
“You are not authorized to release that information to him.”
“I'm releasing it to the patient.”
Elena realized Megan had chosen a side.
The printer started.
A single page emerged.
Then another.
Then a third.
Megan picked them up.
Her face went pale.
“What?” Elena asked.
Megan brought the pages over.
“Someone accessed your chart fourteen times last night.”
Luka looked at the timestamps.
“From where?”
Megan pointed to the terminal codes.
“Three from labor and delivery.”
She swallowed.
“Eleven from executive administration.”
Elena looked at Dr. Hall.
He said nothing.
“Whose login?” Luka asked.
Megan's finger moved down the page.
Then stopped.
Her eyes lifted slowly toward Vanessa.
The account name was printed clearly beside the final access.
V. CROSS.
Vanessa's face went blank.
Ryan stepped between Elena and the page.
“This proves nothing.”
Elena stared at him.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“You knew she was in my medical record.”
“No.”
Luka leaned closer to Ryan.
“Your problem is that you lie before you know what evidence exists.”
Ryan's expression cracked.
Just slightly.
Then a loud electronic tone sounded from the nurses' station.
Every monitor screen went black at once.
Megan whispered something Elena almost did not hear.
“That's impossible.”
The lights flickered.
A second later, the fire doors at both ends of the maternity corridor locked shut.
Hope woke and began to cry.
Elena pulled her close.
Luka turned toward the dark monitors.
His hand went to the radio clipped under his jacket.
Then his phone buzzed.
He looked at the message.
For the first time since entering the hospital, Luka Moretti looked afraid.
“What?” Elena demanded.
He showed her the screen.
A photograph had been sent from an unknown number.
It showed Elena asleep in the maternity room less than an hour earlier.
Hope lay beside her.
Under the photograph were six words.
GIVE US THE M-17 ENVELOPE.
Elena's mouth went dry.
“I don't have an envelope.”
Luka looked toward Ryan.
“No.”
His voice dropped.
“But I think your husband does.”
The photograph on Luka's phone remained open after the message arrived.
Elena forced herself to study it instead of looking away.
She was asleep on her side.
Hope rested in the clear hospital bassinet less than two feet away.
The angle came from inside the room.
Not from the hallway camera.
Someone had stood beside her bed.
Megan checked the room-access log from memory.
“Housekeeping came in once.”
“When?” Luka asked.
“Before seven.”
“The photo timestamp is eight-twelve.”
Megan's face tightened.
“No one should have been in there.”
Elena remembered waking briefly to the smell of expensive citrus perfume.
She had assumed it belonged to Vanessa.
Now she was not sure.
“Was Hope alone at any point?” Luka asked.
Elena's chest tightened.
“Maybe five minutes when I went to the bathroom.”
Megan immediately shook her head.
“A nurse was supposed to remain nearby.”
“Supposed to?”
Megan looked ashamed.
“The floor was short-staffed after the system outage.”
Luka did not blame her.
That surprised Elena.
He simply wrote down the time.
“Systems fail,” he said.
“People exploit the gap.”
Elena stared at the photograph again.
Whoever had taken it could have touched Hope.
Could have moved the clipboard.
Could have copied every name on the registration form.
The idea made her arms tighten around her daughter until Hope protested with a soft grunt.
Elena loosened her hold.
“Sorry, baby.”
Then she looked at Luka.
“Find out who was in that room.”
“I will.”
“No.”
May you like
Her voice steadied.
“We will.”
