Chapter 10 - Two Envelopes, One Child.

Elena watched Ryan through the security monitor.

He looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Terrified.

Richard stood several feet behind her, staring at the son who had believed him dead for years.

“Does he know you're alive?” Elena asked.

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

The answer changed everything about Ryan's face on the screen.

He was not coming to confront a father he knew had survived.

He was walking toward a ghost.

Luka looked at Elena.

“Your decision.”

She appreciated that he said it.

“Let him in.”

Ryan entered slowly.

He held the newborn DNA envelope in one hand.

Then he saw Richard.

The envelope slipped from his fingers.

No one moved to pick it up.

Ryan's face drained of color.

“Dad?”

Richard's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Ryan took one step backward.

“You're dead.”

“I know what you were told.”

“You're dead.”

“Ryan.”

Ryan crossed the room in three fast steps.

For one moment, Elena thought he might embrace him.

Instead, he stopped inches away.

“You let me bury you.”

Richard's eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“You let me stand beside an empty grave.”

“Yes.”

“You let me think I was alone.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Ryan laughed.

The sound was broken.

Elena had heard that sentence too many times in twenty-four hours.

Richard reached for him.

Ryan moved away.

“Don't touch me.”

The room became painfully quiet.

Hope began crying upstairs.

Elena instinctively turned toward the sound.

Ryan did too.

For the first time, Elena saw something real in his face when he heard his daughter.

Pain.

Maybe guilt.

It did not erase anything.

But it was real.

Megan brought Hope downstairs.

Ryan looked at the baby.

He did not approach.

Elena took her and sat.

“What is in your envelope?”

Ryan looked down at the floor where it had fallen.

“A test I ordered after you left the hospital.”

“How did you get a newborn sample?”

Ryan looked at Vanessa.

“She told me where the stolen card was being held.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You went to my father?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Dr. Hall.”

Megan's expression hardened.

“He had Hope's blood sample?”

Ryan nodded.

“He said he was keeping it safe.”

Luka gave a cold laugh.

“Of course he did.”

Ryan looked at Elena.

“I took it from him and sent it to an independent lab.”

“Why?”

“Because Malcolm kept saying the child would fail verification.”

Elena's pulse quickened.

“Why would he say that?”

“I didn't know.”

“And now?”

Ryan picked up the envelope.

“I still don't.”

He handed it to her.

Elena opened it.

The report listed three comparisons.

Child to Elena Bennett Keller.

Probability of maternity: greater than 99.99 percent.

Elena exhaled.

She had not realized how deeply Ryan's earlier threat had lodged inside her.

Hope was hers.

The second comparison was child to Ryan Keller.

Probability of paternity: greater than 99.99 percent.

Elena looked up.

Ryan's eyes were wet.

“I knew she was mine from the prenatal test,” he said.

“Then why didn't you hold her?”

He looked away.

No scientific report could answer that.

Elena returned to the page.

The third comparison was not a parentage test.

It identified a rare inherited marker associated with the original M-17 profile.

MATCH CONFIRMED.

Elena felt Luka lean closer.

“That verifies the descendant condition,” he said.

“The archive unlocks,” Vanessa whispered.

Ryan looked at her.

“Yes.”

Vanessa went pale.

“My father will know.”

Luka already had his phone out.

Rebecca opened the trust portal on an isolated device.

A status line appeared.

M-17 BENEFICIARY DESCENDANT VERIFIED.

ARCHIVE RELEASE AUTHORIZED.

Then another line appeared.

SECONDARY IDENTITY PANEL REQUIRED.

Elena looked toward Thomas's sealed envelope.

“The final DNA panel.”

Luka nodded.

Ryan's face changed.

“No.”

There it was again.

The word Thomas had predicted.

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

Ryan's breathing became shallow.

“Because my father is here now.”

Richard looked confused.

“What does that have to do with it?”

Ryan turned on him.

“You don't know?”

“No.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“Then you've been hiding for twenty-five years and you still don't know why Malcolm let you live.”

Richard's face went gray.

Elena held the sealed envelope.

“Tell me.”

Ryan shook his head.

“Don't make me.”

“You filed to take my daughter from me this morning.”

His eyes closed.

“I know.”

“You stood beside Vanessa while I was bleeding in a hospital gown.”

“I know.”

“You knew my father had warned me about you before I ever met you.”

“Yes.”

“Then you do not get to decide which truth I can survive.”

Ryan looked at Hope.

“I thought if I controlled the trust, I could keep Malcolm away from you.”

Elena stared.

“You tried to protect me by stealing control of my life?”

“I grew up believing my father died because he knew this secret.”

Richard flinched.

Ryan continued.

“Then four years ago, I received a letter in his handwriting.”

Richard looked shocked.

“I never sent you a letter.”

Ryan turned toward him.

“What?”

“I never contacted you.”

Ryan froze.

Luka's eyes narrowed.

“Who gave you the letter?”

“It was mailed to my apartment.”

“What did it say?”

“That Elena Bennett was in danger.”

Ryan looked at Elena.

“That I should find you before Malcolm did.”

Elena felt sick.

“Someone arranged our meeting.”

“Yes.”

Ryan's voice broke.

“I thought it was my father.”

Richard shook his head.

“It wasn't.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“My father.”

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at Ryan.

“He put you near Elena.”

Ryan's face changed as the realization hit.

“He wanted me to marry her.”

Luka's voice was quiet.

“Why?”

Vanessa looked at Hope.

“To create the verified descendant.”

Elena's stomach turned.

She had believed Ryan targeted her for money.

The truth might be worse.

Someone had engineered their meeting because the M-17 trust required her to have a child before its evidence archive could be manipulated.

Ryan sank into a chair.

For the first time, his arrogance disappeared completely.

“I thought I was using the information against Malcolm.”

Elena looked at him.

“He was using you.”

“Yes.”

Richard sat across from his son.

“Ryan, who told you the final panel was dangerous?”

Ryan stared at Thomas's envelope.

“Malcolm.”

“When?”

“After I ordered the prenatal test.”

“What did he say was inside?” Elena asked.

Ryan swallowed.

“He said it would prove Richard Keller was not my father.”

Richard looked down.

“That part is true.”

Ryan's voice became almost inaudible.

“And he said it would prove who was.”

Vanessa slowly backed away from the table.

Elena looked from Ryan to Vanessa.

They both had the same unusual green-gray eyes.

She had noticed it before.

She had never thought anything of it.

Now Vanessa looked toward the door.

“No.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Vanessa.”

“No.”

Her face went white.

“Do not open that envelope.”

Elena stared at both of them.

Then she broke the red wax.

Before Elena broke Thomas's red wax seal, she placed Hope in the bassinet beside Megan.

The gesture was deliberate.

She did not want to be holding her daughter when whatever old secret entered the room.

Hope was not a shield.

She was not evidence.

She was a baby.

Ryan watched Elena tuck the cream blanket beneath Hope's chin.

“I should have done that at the hospital.”

Elena looked at him.

“Yes.”

He flinched at the absence of comfort in her answer.

“I was scared.”

“So was I.”

“I know.”

“No, Ryan.”

Elena stood.

“You were scared of a secret.”

“I was scared while bleeding, exhausted, holding a newborn, and watching my husband leave with another woman.”

Ryan lowered his eyes.

“Those are not the same fear.”

“No.”

Vanessa stared at the floor.

Richard looked as if every sentence were directed at him too.

Luka said nothing.

The silence gave Elena room to hear herself clearly.

This was not only a mystery about parentage.

It was a story about people using fear as permission.

Malcolm used fear to control.

Richard used fear to vanish.

Ryan used fear to betray.

Thomas had used fear to keep secrets.

Even Luka had nearly used fear to make decisions for her.

May you like

Elena touched the wax seal.

Then she opened the envelope because fear no longer got the final vote.
