Chapter 9: Rebuilding the Ranks

Far away from the media circus and the falling empire of the Prescotts, the Hart family home sat nestled on a quiet, tree-lined street just outside Fort Liberty.
The house was warm, smelling faintly of cinnamon tea and old books. Sunlight streamed through the bay windows of the living room, casting a golden glow over the Persian rugs and the wooden bookshelves lined with military histories and family photographs.
Emily sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket on the living room sofa, holding a steaming mug of tea between her hands. She watched as her mother walked into the room carrying a small cardboard box containing the last remnants of her old life—clothes, books, and personal trinkets retrieved from the Prescott guest house under military police escort.
"Is that everything?" Victoria asked gently, setting the box down on the coffee table.
"Yes, Mom," Emily said softly, looking around the room. For the first time in three years, she didn't feel a suffocating weight pressing down on her chest. The air in this house felt clean. Safe. Real. "It feels strange being back here. Like I woke up from a three-year-long bad dream."
"You don't ever have to look back, sweetheart," Victoria said, sitting down on the edge of the sofa and taking Emily's hand. "Your old room is exactly the way you left it. Take all the time you need to heal. You are home now."
Emily leaned her head against her mother's shoulder, a single tear of pure relief slipping down her cheek. "Thank you, Mom. For coming after me. For not letting them win."
Victoria wrapped her arm around her daughter, holding her close. "I'd storm the gates of hell before I let anyone hurt you, Emily. Never forget that."
Just then, Victoria's secure cell phone buzzed on the coffee table.
She glanced down at the screen. It was an encrypted message from Major General Vance:
SEC_UPDATE: FEDERAL ASSET FREEZE COMPLETE. PRESCORTT ASSETS PLACED UNDER DOJ RECEIVERSHIP. CONGRESSIONAL INQUIRY CLOSED WITH COMMENDATION FOR INTEGRITY.

Victoria locked the screen, turned her phone face down, and smiled down at her daughter.
The battle was won. The war was over. And the Hart family was finally, truly safe.
