Six months after the trial concluded, the sun beat down warmly on the parade grounds of Fort Liberty during an annual change-of-command ceremony.
Brigadier General Victoria Hart stood tall at the podium, addressing a formation of thousands of service members, families, and civilian leaders. Her voice rang out clear and authoritative, commanding the absolute attention of the entire base.
"Service is not merely about wearing a uniform, following orders, or executing tactical objectives," Victoria declared, her voice carrying across the field. "True service is about protection. It is about standing like a wall between the innocent and those who wish to exploit them—whether that threat wears a foreign uniform or hides behind a corporate title and generational wealth."
Applause rippled through the ranks.
In the VIP seating area, Emily smiled proudly alongside Major General Arthur Vance and several community leaders who had partnered with her newly established advocacy foundation. The foundation had already successfully helped dozens of individuals escape dangerous domestic environments, providing them with legal resources, housing, and a renewed sense of dignity.
After the ceremony ended, soldiers and officers lined up to shake General Hart's hand and offer their congratulations on her upcoming transition to a high-level advisory role within the Department of Defense leadership.
As the crowd slowly thinned out, Emily walked up to her mother, holding a small bouquet of white lilies.
"Another successful deployment, General," Emily joked lightly, handing her mother the flowers.
