Chapter 7: Safe Haven

Inside the sterile walls of Mercy General, the hospital room had been transformed into a quiet fortress. Two military police officers stood guard outside the double doors, their presence ensuring that no unverified visitors, process servers, or Prescott lackeys could come within fifty yards of the room.

Inside, Emily Hart sat propped up against a stack of crisp white pillows. The worst of the physical shock had faded, replaced by the quiet, trembling relief of a survivor who finally realized the nightmare was over. A breakfast tray sat untouched on the rolling table beside her bed.

When the door clicked open and Victoria walked in, Emily’s eyes lit up.

"Mom," Emily breathed, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I heard the news. One of the nurses saw the report online... Ethan and Brandon... they were detained?"

Victoria walked straight to the bedside, gently brushing a lock of hair away from her daughter’s forehead. Her tough, unyielding military demeanor melted away instantly, replaced entirely by the tender warmth of a mother.

"It's over, sweetheart," Victoria said softly, taking Emily’s hand in both of hers. "They can never hurt you again. The federal government has frozen their assets, and a restraining order has been signed by a federal judge. You are entirely safe."

Emily let out a long, shuddering breath—a breath she felt like she had been holding for three miserable years of marriage.

"I was so afraid, Mom," Emily whispered, her voice breaking. "They told me no one would believe me. They said because of who they were, my voice didn't matter."

"They lied to you," Victoria said fiercely, her eyes burning with a protective intensity. "They forgot that the most powerful force on this earth isn't old money or corporate boardrooms. It's a mother protecting her child. And nobody messes with my daughter."

Suddenly, a soft knock sounded at the hospital room door.

The door opened an inch, and a young civilian doctor poked his head in, looking hesitant. "Excuse me, Colonel Hart? Sorry to interrupt, but we have a discharge paperwork clearance ready for Mrs. Prescott—or, well, Miss Hart. Whenever you're ready to take her home."

Victoria stood up, squaring her shoulders, her eyes fixed on the future.

"We are ready right now, Doctor," Victoria said. "Pack your bag, Emily. We're going home."
