Chapter 5: Gathering the Troops

By the time Ethan returned to the estate in Charlotte, he looked like a ghost. He burst into his mother’s home office, shaking uncontrollably.

Margaret was pacing behind her massive mahogany desk, screaming into her cell phone.

"What do you mean my accounts are frozen? By whose authority? ... The IRS?! Since when does the IRS freeze an offshore trust account without a thirty-day notice?!"

She slammed the phone down and looked at Ethan, her eyes wild with an emotion she hadn't felt in decades: utter helplessness.

"What happened to you?" she demanded, taking in his disheveled suit and pale face.

"We need to stop, Mother," Ethan stammered, collapsing into a leather armchair. "We need to let Emily go. Sign the papers. Let her take whatever she wants. We have to stop."

"Are you out of your mind?!" Margaret shrieked. "Do you have any idea what's happening? Our shell companies in Panama are being audited. Three of our largest investors pulled out in the last hour because someone leaked confidential internal memos to the Wall Street Journal. This... this Colonel is tearing our lives down!"

"She's not just a Colonel," Ethan whispered, the memory of the red laser dot seared into his mind. "She has people. Monsters. We can't fight her."

Margaret slammed her hands on the desk. "We are the Prescotts! I will not be bullied by some blue-collar military grunt!"

But Margaret didn’t know the reality of the situation. She didn't know that fifty miles away, inside the secure basement of a private legal firm owned by a former Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer, my troops were assembling.

I stood at the head of a long conference table. Sitting around it were five people.

There was Miller, my comms and intel specialist.
Sarah, a forensic accountant who had previously tracked terrorist funding for the CIA.
David, a cyber-security genius who owed me his life from a convoy ambush in Syria.
And Marcus, the Delta operator who owned the cabin, currently sharpening a hunting knife and looking intensely bored.

"Status report," I ordered.

Sarah looked up from her glowing iPad. "I’ve traced Margaret’s offshore accounts. She’s been laundering kickbacks from city contracts through a charity front for ten years. It’s a federal RICO violation waiting to happen. The FBI has the anonymous packet I sent them an hour ago. They're salivating."

"Good," I nodded. "David?"

"I’m deep inside Prescott Enterprises' main servers," David grinned, his fingers dancing across a keyboard. "Ethan has a hidden folder. Photos, blackmail material, NDA documents from his previous victims. I’ve already decrypted them and forwarded copies to the State Attorney General’s office."

"They are bleeding," Miller added, leaning back in his chair. "Their stock is down twelve percent since the market opened. Margaret is trying to reach the Governor to call off the state authorities, but we've jammed her private routing numbers. Every call she makes gets redirected to a dead line."

I looked at the projection screen at the end of the room, displaying the smug, arrogant faces of the Prescott family from a recent magazine cover.

The door to the basement opened softly.

Everyone turned.

Emily stood there. She was dressed in a simple pair of jeans and a sweater. The bruises on her face were still dark, but the shattered, terrified look in her eyes was completely gone. In its place was a fierce, burning resolve. She looked exactly like me.

She walked over to the table and looked at the documents, the server logs, the evidence of her abusers' impending downfall.

"Mom?" she asked, her voice steady and clear.

"Yes, Emily?"

"When do we press charges?" she asked, looking directly at Ethan's photo on the screen. "I want to be the one who signs the complaint. I want him to know it was me."

A proud, dangerous smile spread across my face.

"We press charges tomorrow morning, sweetie," I said, pulling her into a side hug. "Right after we take the rest of their money."

Would you like me to continue writing the next set of chapters (6-10) to see how the FBI raid and the legal battle unfold?
