Chapter 14: The Final Plea

The federal courtroom was packed to absolute capacity for the pre-trial evidentiary hearing. Media vans lined the streets outside for blocks, and camera crews clamored for position as the federal marshals escorted the prisoners inside.

Margaret Prescott looked completely hollowed out. The titanium shell of arrogance that had protected her for decades had completely shattered. As she walked down the center aisle in her orange jumpsuit, her eyes scanned the gallery, searching desperately for a single friendly face, an ally, a lawyer, anyone who could offer a lifeline.

There was no one.

Seated in the front row, wearing my pristine Class-A uniform with my ribbons and medals catching the morning light through the high courthouse windows, I stared straight ahead. Beside me, Emily sat tall and composed in her navy suit, her expression carved from absolute ice.

Judge Harrison took his seat, hammering his gavel once to quiet the buzzing courtroom.

"We are reconvening for the formal presentation of the consolidated federal and state indictments against Margaret Prescott, Brandon Prescott, and Ethan Prescott," Judge Harrison announced, scanning the documents before him. "The court has received the extensive proffer agreements submitted by the prosecution, along with the newly decrypted digital evidence cache provided by federal investigators."

The lead federal prosecutor stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "Your Honor, in light of the overwhelming evidence—including financial ledgers, video recordings of systemic bribery, and verified witness testimonies—the government is offering a final, non-negotiable disposition."

He paused, letting the silence hang heavy over the courtroom.

"Defendant Brandon Prescott has fully cooperated with the investigation, providing internal corporate records detailing racketeering and tax evasion. In exchange, the government recommends a reduced sentence of ten years at a federal minimum-security facility."

Brandon slumped slightly in his chair, letting out a long, shuddering breath of relief.

"Defendant Ethan Prescott," the prosecutor continued, turning his gaze toward the middle chair, "faces a combined total of thirty-five years across federal financial crimes and state felony domestic battery charges, with no possibility of parole for at least twenty."

Ethan let out a pathetic, choked gasp, burying his face in his cuffed hands as tears spilled over his fingers. The invincible golden boy of Charlotte was gone; there was only a broken criminal facing the raw, unfiltered weight of his actions.

"And finally," the prosecutor said, turning his cold gaze toward the matriarch at the end of the table, "Margaret Prescott. As the primary architect of a multi-million-dollar criminal enterprise, orchestrating decades of fraud, bribery, witness intimidation, and attempted obstruction of justice, the government is pursuing the maximum statutory penalty: fifty consecutive years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, with all remaining personal assets permanently forfeited to the state."

Margaret slowly rose to her feet. Her defense attorney had abandoned her days ago; she stood entirely alone before the bench.

"Your Honor," Margaret began, her voice cracking, losing its former steel-plated authority. "This is a gross miscarriage of justice. I built Prescott Enterprises from the ground up. I provided jobs, economic stability, community leadership... I am an upstanding citizen of this state—"

"You are a criminal who weaponized wealth to terrorize civilians and subvert the rule of law," Judge Harrison interrupted, his voice cutting through her plea like a razor blade. "You believed your money made you immune to the laws that govern ordinary citizens. You believed you could buy, break, or bury anyone who stood in your way."

The judge leaned forward, locking his eyes onto hers.

"You were wrong, Mrs. Prescott."

With a sharp, decisive motion, Judge Harrison brought his gavel down.

"All motions for dismissal are denied. The defendants are remanded back to federal custody immediately, to await final sentencing and institutional transfer."
