Chapter 19: A New Standard

Two weeks after the gallery opening, I received an official courier package delivered directly to our new home in Beaufort.
It wasn't from the courts. It wasn't from federal investigators or corporate liquidators.
It was from the Department of the Army Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
I sat at the polished wooden dining table, carefully sliding a letter opener beneath the heavy wax seal of the envelope. Emily poured two cups of herbal tea, setting one down in front of me before pulling out the chair opposite and sitting down with a curious look.
"What is it, Mom? Another deployment order?" she asked, raising an eyebrow playfully.
"Not quite," I replied, unfolding the heavy cardstock letter.
I read through the formal paragraphs, a slow, proud smile spreading across my face.
"Well?" Emily prompted, leaning forward.
"It's from the Chief of Staff of the Army," I said, looking up to meet her eyes. "They are formally establishing a new Department of Defense initiative focused on supporting military families dealing with domestic crisis, legal intimidation, and systemic abuse—providing absolute, unyielding legal and tactical resources so no military spouse or family member ever feels isolated or trapped by powerful abusers again."
Emily’s breath caught in her throat. She stared at me across the table, her blue eyes shimmering with unshed tears of profound validation.
"And..." I continued, tapping the bottom of the letter, "they want me to head the national advisory board upon my official retirement next month."
The silence in the dining room lasted for several seconds, broken only by the gentle ticking of the wall clock and the distant call of a gulling outside over the harbor.
"You're retiring?" Emily whispered, a mixture of shock and joy in her voice. "Really, Mom?"
"Twenty-five years is a long time to fight other people's wars, Em," I said, reaching across the table to take her hand in mine, squeezing it firmly. "It’s time I dedicated my uniform to fighting for the people who matter most."

Emily smiled, a tear finally spilling over her lashes and tracking down her cheek, but her face radiated pure, unshakable light.
"Then let's do it," she said softly. "Together."
