Chapter 9: The Secret My Father Left Behind

I stared at the folder in Richard’s hand.
For several seconds, I didn’t move.
Everything inside me told me not to take it.
Not because I didn’t want the truth.
Because I was terrified of what the truth might be.
My entire life had been built around the belief that I knew my family.
My mother was difficult, but she loved me.
My father was gone, but he had been a good man.
My childhood memories were simple.
Safe.
Now, in one week, everything I believed had started falling apart.
I reached for the folder.
Richard handed it to me without saying another word.
"Jake, whatever you find inside there, understand one thing."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"Your mother has spent years making sure nobody discovered it."
My fingers tightened around the folder.
"And you helped her?"
Richard looked away.
That hesitation told me more than his words could.
"At first."
The answer shocked me.
"What does that mean?"
He took a breath.
"It means I made mistakes."
Megan stepped closer.
"Jake, don't open it here."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because if this is what I think it is..."
She stopped.
"What?"
She shook her head.
"I don't want our baby to be around this."
Her words reminded me of something important.
This wasn't just about my mother.
This wasn't just about my father.
This was about protecting the family Megan and I were trying to build.
We went back inside.
I locked the door.
Not because I was afraid of Richard.
Because I was afraid of anyone else trying to control the truth.
Megan sat on the couch while I opened the folder.
The first page was a document.
A legal agreement.
I read the names.
My father’s name.
My mother’s name.
And another name I didn’t recognize.
My hands became cold.
"What is it?"
Megan asked.
I looked up.
"I don't know."
I continued reading.
The document was from almost fifteen years ago.
It involved money.
Property.
And something called a trust.
I frowned.
"My father had a trust?"
Megan looked confused.
"I didn't know."
I kept reading.
Then I saw a sentence that made my heart stop.
"In the event of Daniel Walker’s death, control of the family assets will transfer to his son upon his twenty-fifth birthday, unless otherwise legally contested."
Daniel Walker.
My father.
Family assets?
I looked at Megan.
"My mother never told me about this."
"Maybe she didn't want you to know."
I turned the page.
There were emails.
Messages.
Dates.
The oldest ones were from before my father died.
Then I saw something that made my breathing stop.
A message from my mother.
To Richard.
"If Jake finds out about the trust, everything changes."
I read it again.
And again.
My mother knew.
She had known about this for years.
"She hid this from me."
Megan reached for my hand.
"Jake..."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
Before she could answer, my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
My mother.
I almost ignored it.
But this time, I answered.
"Hello."
There was silence.
Then my mother's voice.
"Where did you get those papers?"
My heart sank.
She knew.
"You knew about this."
"Jake, listen to me."
"No."
My voice shook.
"You listen to me."
I stood up.
"You lied about Megan. You manipulated me. And now I find out you hid something about Dad?"
"Your father made mistakes."
I froze.
"What mistakes?"
Silence.
That silence was the answer.
"What happened to my father?"
My mother’s voice became quieter.
"Some things are better left in the past."
I laughed bitterly.
"That's what you always say when you're hiding something."
"Jake, you don't understand."
"No, Mom."
I looked at Megan.
"For the first time, I'm starting to."
My mother’s voice changed.
"You need to stop digging."
The warning was clear.
Not a mother's concern.
A threat.
"Why?"
Another pause.
Then she said:
"Because if you keep searching, you'll destroy the image you have of your father."
The call ended.
I stood there holding my phone.
Megan looked at me.
"What did she say?"
I swallowed.
"She knows."
"Knows what?"
I looked back at the folder.
"Everything."
That night, I barely slept.
I kept thinking about my father.
About the trust.
About my mother’s secrets.
But just before sunrise, I found something hidden inside the folder.
A small handwritten letter.
The handwriting was familiar.
My father’s.
The first line made my heart stop.
"Dear Jake, if you are reading this, it means your mother failed to keep the truth hidden forever."
I held the letter with shaking hands.
May you like
Because my father had left me a message.
A message my mother never wanted me to see.
