Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Messages

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

"The person who sent that message."

Megan’s words echoed in my mind.

I stared at her, waiting for her to explain.

"Who was it?"

She looked down.

"I don't know his name."

"His?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

A strange feeling moved through my chest.

A man.

Someone I had never heard about.

Someone connected to my mother.

"Megan, why didn't you tell me this before?"

She closed her eyes.

"Because I didn’t know if it mattered."

I sat beside her.

"Everything matters now."

She nodded slowly.

"The night before our wedding, I couldn’t sleep."

She looked toward the window, remembering.

"I was nervous. Excited. Scared. Everything at once."

A small smile appeared for a second.

"I was thinking about how my life was about to change."

Then the smile disappeared.

"That’s when I heard voices outside."

"Outside?"

"Near the parking area behind the building."

I listened carefully.

"I saw your mother standing there with a man."

"What were they doing?"

"They were arguing."

My heart started beating faster.

"About what?"

Megan shook her head.

"I couldn't hear everything. But I heard your mother say one thing clearly."

"What?"

She looked at me.

"She said, 'I can't let him make this mistake.'"

The room felt colder.

"She was talking about me."

Megan nodded.

"I think so."

I stood up and walked around the apartment.

Everything I thought I knew about my mother was falling apart.

She had not suddenly changed.

Maybe this had been happening long before I noticed.

"Did you recognize the man?"

Megan shook her head.

"No. But I saw him again."

"When?"

"Three weeks ago."

My eyes narrowed.

"The same time your injuries started?"

She nodded.

My anger grew.

"Where?"

"Outside our building."

I froze.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because he saw me."

"And?"

"He smiled."

That single word made my skin crawl.

"Like he knew something."

I grabbed my phone.

"We need to find out who he is."

Megan reached for my hand.

"Jake, be careful."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because your mother isn't acting alone."

Those words confirmed what I had been afraid to admit.

This wasn't just a family argument.

It was something planned.

Later that afternoon, I called Linda.

She answered immediately.

"Jake?"

"I need your help."

There was a pause.

"Did something happen?"

I explained everything.

The messages.

The picture.

The man my mother was seen with.

When I finished, Linda was silent.

Then she said:

"I think I know who it is."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

"His name is Richard Hale."

The name meant nothing to me.

"Who is he?"

Linda hesitated.

"He used to work with your mother."

"Where?"

"At a family law office."

My stomach tightened.

"Family law?"

"Yes."

The meaning hit me instantly.

Custody.

Divorce.

Legal battles.

My mother wasn't just trying to scare Megan.

She had been preparing.

"How long has she known him?"

"Years."

I looked at Megan.

She looked terrified.

Linda continued.

"Jake, you need to understand something."

"What?"

"Richard is very good at making people believe a story."

I swallowed.

"What kind of story?"

"The kind where the victim looks like the problem."

Those words were painfully familiar.

Because that was exactly what happened to Megan.

I thanked Linda and ended the call.

For the next hour, I searched through old memories.

Things I had ignored.

Small details.

Comments my mother made.

Questions she asked.

Then I remembered something.

Six months earlier, my mother asked me:

"If something happened, would you know what to do legally?"

At the time, I thought she was talking about protecting the baby.

Now I wondered.

Protecting the baby from who?

That evening, Megan and I sat together on the couch.

For the first time in weeks, we talked honestly.

No accusations.

No fear.

Just the truth.

"I should have listened," I said.

Megan looked at me.

"I know."

The answer surprised me.

She wasn't pretending everything was okay.

She wasn't saying the pain disappeared.

Because it didn't.

Trust had been damaged.

But we were trying to rebuild it.

Then suddenly, there was another knock at the door.

Both of us froze.

Not because we were expecting someone.

Because we weren't.

I stood up slowly.

"Stay here."

I walked toward the door.

Before I opened it, my phone received a new message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

"If you open that door, you'll finally learn what Megan has been hiding from you."

I looked at the door.

Then at my wife.

May you like

And for the first time...

I wasn't sure which truth was waiting on the other side.
