Chapter 10: My Father’s Final Message

I stared at the first line of my father’s letter for what felt like an eternity.

"Dear Jake, if you are reading this, it means your mother failed to keep the truth hidden forever."

My hands trembled.

I had not seen my father’s handwriting in years.

Even after all this time, I recognized it immediately.

The way he formed his letters.

The slight tilt of his words.

The careful way he always wrote my name.

For a moment, I wasn’t a thirty-year-old husband standing in a small apartment.

I was a child again.

Sitting beside him at the kitchen table.

Watching him fix broken toys.

Listening to him promise that no matter what happened, he would always protect me.

I swallowed hard and continued reading.

"Jake, if you are reading this, something has gone wrong. I hoped you would never need to know these things, because I wanted you to grow up believing your family was safe."

I stopped.

My eyes burned.

My father had known.

He had known something was wrong.

Megan sat beside me silently.

She didn’t interrupt.

She just held my hand.

And that meant everything.

I continued.

"Your mother is not the person everyone believes she is."

My chest tightened.

Those words felt impossible.

Because they came from the one person whose opinion mattered most.

My father.

"I loved your mother. I truly did. But over time, I realized she became obsessed with controlling everything around her."

I looked away.

The words matched everything I had experienced.

The accusations.

The manipulation.

The need to control every decision.

"After I discovered what she had done, I began making arrangements to protect you."

My heart started racing.

"What she had done?"

I whispered the words.

Megan looked at me.

I nodded.

The next paragraph was harder.

"Years ago, I discovered that money was missing from the family business. At first, I believed it was a mistake. But the records showed someone had been moving funds without my knowledge."

My hands tightened around the paper.

The family business.

The same business my father built before he died.

"When I confronted your mother, she denied everything. But I later discovered she had been working with someone I trusted."

I looked at Megan.

Richard.

The name immediately came to mind.

"I was preparing to expose the truth when I became sick."

My breathing stopped.

My father’s death had always been explained simply.

A sudden illness.

A tragic event.

That was what I had been told.

But now...

I wasn't sure.

The letter continued.

"Jake, I need you to understand something. Your mother may try to convince you that I was wrong. She may try to make you feel guilty for questioning her. Don't let her do that."

I closed my eyes.

Because that was exactly what she had done my entire life.

"The person who controls the truth controls the story."

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it explained everything.

My mother controlled the story about Megan.

She controlled the story about my father.

She controlled the story about everything.

Then I reached the final page.

The last paragraph was shorter.

But it changed everything.

"Jake, there is one person who knows the entire truth. Someone who was there when everything happened."

My eyes moved to the final sentence.

"Find your father’s old business partner, Thomas Reed."

I looked at Megan.

"Who is Thomas Reed?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

I folded the letter carefully.

"We need to find him."

Before we could continue, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

"Hello?"

A man’s voice spoke.

"Jake Walker?"

"Who is this?"

"My name is Thomas Reed."

My entire body froze.

Megan looked at me.

The timing was impossible.

"How did you get this number?"

"I've been waiting for you to find that letter."

My heart started pounding.

"You knew about it?"

"Yes."

"Then tell me the truth."

There was a long silence.

Finally, Thomas spoke.

"Your father wasn't planning to leave your mother."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means the story your mother told everyone..."

His voice became lower.

"Was a lie."

I stood up.

"What story?"

Thomas took a breath.

"The story about how your father died."

The room went completely silent.

Megan covered her mouth.

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What are you saying?"

Thomas answered slowly:

"Jake, your father's death was not just a tragedy."

A pause.

"It was the beginning of your mother's biggest secret."

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

My father.

My mother.

The lies.

The hidden documents.

The years of manipulation.

Everything connected back to one moment.

The day I lost my father.

And now I had to uncover what really happened.
