Chapter 14: The Final Piece of the Puzzle

For a moment, I couldn't understand what Thomas had just said.
"Richard Hale."
The name echoed through my mind.
Richard.
The man who appeared calm.
The man who acted like he was helping us.
The man who claimed he knew the truth about my mother.
Could he really have been behind everything?
I looked at Mark.
His expression told me everything.
He wasn't surprised.
"You knew," I whispered.
Mark looked down.
"Yes."
My chest tightened.
"How long?"
"Years."
The anger inside me became almost impossible to control.
"So everyone knew except me?"
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could deny it.
My entire life, people had been making decisions around me.
They decided what I should know.
What I should believe.
What version of reality I was allowed to see.
And I was tired.
"I want the truth."
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
"No more half-truths. No more protecting me. No more excuses."
Thomas nodded.
"You deserve that."
He walked toward the desk and opened another drawer.
Inside was a small recording device.
"What is that?"
"Your father’s."
I looked at him.
"My father recorded conversations?"
"Only important ones."
Thomas pressed a button.
A few seconds of static filled the warehouse.
Then I heard a voice.
My father's voice.
My knees almost gave out.
"Daniel..." I whispered.
I hadn't heard him speak in ten years.
The recording continued.
"I know what you're trying to do, Richard."
My entire body froze.
Richard.
My father knew.
The recording continued.
"You thought you could move the money quietly. You thought nobody would notice."
A second voice appeared.
Richard.
Calm.
Cold.
"You don't understand the situation, Daniel."
My father replied:
"No. I understand perfectly."
There was a pause.
Then Richard said:
"You really think anyone will believe you?"
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Thomas.
"How did you get this?"
"Your father gave me a copy before he died."
I felt sick.
"My mother wasn't the one who stole the money."
Thomas shook his head.
"Not alone."
Everything clicked.
Richard needed access.
My mother had influence.
Together, they created the perfect plan.
My mother controlled the story.
Richard controlled the legal side.
And my father became the person they needed to remove.
"But why did my mother help him?"
Thomas answered quietly.
"Because Richard promised her she would never lose control."
I closed my eyes.
That was the one thing my mother always wanted.
Control.
Not money.
Not power.
Control over people.
Control over me.
My phone suddenly rang.
This time, I already knew who it was.
My mother.
I answered.
"Mom."
Her voice sounded different.
Tired.
"Jake, where are you?"
"Finding the truth."
A long silence followed.
Then she said:
"You need to stop."
"No."
My voice was steady.
"I spent my entire life listening to you."
"Jake..."
"I believed you when you said Dad was sick."
A pause.
"I believed you when you said Megan was lying."
Another pause.
"But I don't believe you anymore."
My mother’s voice cracked slightly.
"You don't understand what I did to protect you."
I looked at the recording device.
"Did you protect me?"
Silence.
"Or did you protect yourself?"
For the first time...
My mother had no answer.
Then she whispered:
"I never wanted things to go this far."
My heart sank.
Because that sounded like an admission.
"What does that mean?"
She started crying.
"Richard told me everything would be fine."
There it was.
The name.
The confirmation.
"Mom..."
"I was afraid."
I closed my eyes.
"You let him ruin our family because you were afraid?"
"I thought I could fix it."
The call went quiet.
Then she said:
"Jake, please."
"What?"
"Please don't hate me."
I looked around the warehouse.
At the documents.
At the evidence.
At the truth.
"I don't know if I can forgive you."
The words hurt both of us.
"But I know I can't keep protecting your lies."
I ended the call.
For the first time in my life...
I chose the truth over my mother.
But the fight wasn't over.
Because Richard was still out there.
And he knew we had found the evidence.
That night, when I returned home, Megan was waiting.
She hugged me carefully.
"Did you find the truth?"
I nodded.
"Yes."
She looked relieved.
Then my phone buzzed.
A final message.
From Richard.
"Congratulations, Jake. You found the pieces."
My blood ran cold.
The next line appeared.
"But you still don't know why your mother was willing to sacrifice everything."
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
"Ask Megan about the night your father died."
I looked at my wife.
Her face turned completely pale.
May you like
And I knew...
There was still one secret left.
