Chapter 8: Face to Face After Six Years

Chapter 8: Face to Face After Six Years

The monitors went dark.

Silence swallowed the hallway.

No one spoke.

No one dared to interrupt the moment that had just shattered six years of grief.

Ethan stood frozen.

His heartbeat thundered in his ears.

He had seen her.

Not a photograph.

Not a recording from years ago.

Emily.

Alive.

Smiling.

His knees nearly gave out.

The little boy tugged gently on his sleeve.

"Daddy..."

Ethan looked down.

"Was that really Mommy?"

For a moment, he couldn't answer.

His throat tightened.

Then he slowly nodded.

"I think..."

He swallowed.

"I think it was."

The little boy's eyes filled with tears.

"I knew she wasn't gone."

Ethan blinked.

"What?"

The child looked embarrassed.

"I used to talk to her."

The hallway fell silent again.

Victor frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The boy looked around nervously.

"I thought everyone would think I was making it up."

Ethan knelt beside him.

"You can tell me anything."

The child hesitated.

"Sometimes..."

"I heard her voice."

Everyone stared.

"Where?"

"In the walls."

A chill spread through the corridor.

The little girl nodded immediately.

"I heard her too."

Every adult looked at her.

"You did?"

She nodded.

"Sometimes at night."

"She told us to stay quiet."

"She said she'd come back."

Victor slowly removed his glasses.

His hands trembled.

"So she found the tunnels."

Agent Daniel Ross nodded.

"And she used them."

He turned toward Ethan.

"Your wife wasn't hiding."

"She was building a case."

Ethan looked at him.

"All alone?"

Ross shook his head.

"We don't know."

Victor suddenly spoke.

"I do."

Everyone turned toward him.

"There was someone helping her."

Ethan narrowed his eyes.

"Who?"

Victor looked toward the darkness at the end of the passage.

"I never learned his name."

"But Emily trusted him."

"He was the reason she stayed alive."

Adrian laughed despite the blood soaking through his jacket.

"You still don't understand."

Ross immediately pointed his rifle at him.

"Don't move."

Adrian ignored him.

Instead, he looked directly at Ethan.

"Ask yourself one question."

Ethan remained silent.

"If Emily has been alive all these years..."

"Why didn't she come back for your son?"

The words hit like a punch.

Ethan froze.

The little boy looked confused.

"Mommy loves me."

Adrian smiled.

"Does she?"

Ross stepped forward.

"Enough."

Adrian looked almost amused.

"I'm only asking the obvious question."

He turned back to Ethan.

"Six years."

"She contacted federal agencies."

"She hacked our network."

"She gathered evidence."

"But somehow..."

"She never rescued her own child."

The hallway became painfully quiet.

The doubt lingered only for a second.

Then Victor shook his head.

"No."

Adrian looked at him.

"You're wrong."

Victor spoke with certainty.

"Emily didn't know."

Adrian's smile faded.

Victor continued.

"The boy disappeared eight months ago."

"Emily vanished six years ago."

"She believed he was safe with Ethan."

Realization spread across the room.

Adrian's expression hardened.

Victor was right.

Emily couldn't rescue a kidnapping she never knew had happened.

Ross looked toward Ethan.

"He has a point."

Ethan slowly nodded.

The doubt disappeared.

Replaced by determination.

"I'm going to find her."

Adrian quietly laughed.

"If she's still alive."

Ross's radio suddenly crackled.

A female voice came through.

"Agent Ross."

He immediately picked it up.

"Go ahead."

"We've secured the east wing."

Another voice interrupted.

"The ballroom is clear."

"Medical teams are entering."

Ross glanced around the hallway.

"We're in the underground passage."

"Any sign of Emily Winters?"

A pause followed.

Then...

"Negative."

Ross frowned.

"What do you mean negative?"

"We located the control room."

"It was empty."

Ethan's heart sank.

Ross asked quickly,

"How long ago?"

"No more than two minutes."

Adrian smiled again.

"There it is."

Ross slowly lowered the radio.

"She left."

Victor looked thoughtful.

"No."

"She moved."

Everyone stared.

"What?"

Victor pointed upward.

"Emily knew Adrian would trace the broadcast."

"She was never going to stay in one place."

Ross considered it.

"That makes sense."

A loud metallic door slammed somewhere deeper in the tunnels.

Everyone turned.

Another sound followed.

Footsteps.

Running.

Fast.

Ross immediately signaled his team.

"Weapons ready."

Several FBI agents moved into defensive positions.

The footsteps grew closer.

Then stopped.

A frightened teenage boy stumbled into the hallway.

He couldn't have been older than sixteen.

His clothes were torn.

His face was covered in dirt.

He looked exhausted.

The moment he saw the armed officers, he raised both hands.

"Please!"

"Don't shoot!"

Ross kept his weapon trained.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Noah."

"How did you get down here?"

"I escaped."

Ethan frowned.

"Escaped from where?"

The teenager pointed back toward the darkness.

"There are more."

The words echoed through the corridor.

Victor looked at him carefully.

"What do you mean more?"

"More rooms."

Noah struggled to catch his breath.

"I counted at least seven."

The little girl began crying.

"I told you."

Ross stepped forward.

"Who's inside those rooms?"

Noah looked down.

"Kids."

The hallway fell silent.

"How many?"

"I don't know."

"Some have been there a long time."

Ethan felt sick.

"My God..."

Noah continued.

"I wasn't supposed to get out."

Ross asked,

"Who was keeping you there?"

The teenager slowly turned.

His eyes settled on Adrian.

"That man."

Every eye shifted to Adrian.

He remained strangely calm.

Noah pointed directly at him.

"He came every month."

"He said nobody was ever coming."

"He said we didn't exist anymore."

The little boy hiding beside Ethan suddenly whispered,

"I remember him."

Ethan looked down.

"What?"

"He used to smile."

The child shivered.

"I hated when he smiled."

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

For the first time...

He looked tired.

Ross stepped closer.

"How many children?"

Adrian remained silent.

Ross repeated the question.

"How many?"

Adrian slowly opened his eyes.

Then quietly answered.

"I stopped counting."

The hallway erupted.

Guests shouted.

Security officers cursed.

One FBI agent had to restrain a grieving father who tried to attack Adrian.

Ethan simply stood there.

Speechless.

The truth was even darker than he imagined.

This had never been about one missing boy.

There were others.

Many others.

Children who had been erased.

Forgotten.

Hidden beneath one of the richest estates in the country.

Suddenly...

Every emergency light in the tunnel flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the backup power shut off completely.

Darkness swallowed everyone.

Only a few flashlight beams cut through the black.

Ross reached for his radio.

Nothing.

Dead.

A woman's voice echoed through the darkness.

Not from the speakers.

From somewhere inside the tunnel itself.

"Ethan..."

His heart stopped.

It was Emily.

This time...

She wasn't speaking through a microphone.

She was somewhere nearby.

Very nearby.

"I found the children."

Her voice trembled for the first time.

"But..."

She paused.

"They found me too."

Then came the unmistakable sound of a gunshot.

Followed by Emily's scream.

May you like

And then...

Silence.
