Chapter 15: The Founder of The Circle

Chapter 15: The Founder of The Circle
Alexander Voss looked into the camera with the composure of a man who had never been questioned.
Not by a government.
Not by a court.

Not by his enemies.
He adjusted the cuff of his black suit.
Every movement was precise.
Deliberate.
Controlled.
Behind him was a room unlike anything Ethan had seen before.
Dark wood walls.
Ancient paintings.
A massive round table made of black marble.
Empty chairs surrounded it.
Each chair bore the same silver emblem.
A perfect circle crossed by a single vertical line.
The symbol of The Circle.
Victor stared at the screen.
"I watched him die."
Alexander smiled faintly.
"Many people did."
"And yet..."
"Here I am."
Ross stepped closer to the monitor.
"You're under arrest."
Alexander actually laughed.
The sound was soft.
Almost grandfatherly.
"Agent Ross..."
"You've been chasing shadows."
"You cannot arrest an idea."
Ross's jaw tightened.
"You murdered children."
Alexander's expression remained unchanged.
"No."
"I preserved an institution."
Ross fired back.
"You call this preserving?"
Alexander folded his hands.
"I call it continuity."
Ethan had stopped listening.
He was already moving through the crawlspace.
His flashlight illuminated only a few feet ahead.
The tunnel was barely wide enough for his shoulders.
Every breath echoed off the concrete.
Behind him, Ross's voice faded into the distance.
"Ethan!"
"Stay on the marked points!"
Ethan looked down.
The brass compass lay open in one hand.
The tiny map guided every movement.
Red marks.
Safe places.
Nothing else mattered.
He carefully placed his boot on the first mark.
Then the second.
Then the third.
Not one inch to either side.
His breathing slowed.
His heartbeat became his metronome.
One careful step at a time.
Back in the command center, Alexander continued speaking.
"You all believe Adrian Blackwell betrayed me."
Victor looked at him.
"He did."
Alexander shook his head.
"No."
"He disappointed me."
"There is a difference."
Ross folded his arms.
"So what now?"
"You eliminate everyone?"
Alexander looked almost offended.
"Violence is inefficient."
"I prefer succession."
Victor frowned.
"Succession?"
Alexander nodded.
"The Circle has always survived by replacing people."
"Not institutions."
He looked directly into the camera.
"Adrian failed."
"So another will take his place."
Ross asked,
"And who would that be?"
Alexander smiled.
"You've already met her."
Silence filled the room.
Victor's eyes widened.
"No..."
Alexander nodded.
"Yes."
Ross looked confused.
"Who?"
Alexander answered without hesitation.
"Isabella."
Ethan's estranged wife.
The woman who had helped hide his son.
The woman everyone believed had merely been manipulated.
Victor shook his head.
"She isn't capable of leading The Circle."
Alexander smiled knowingly.
"Capability is overrated."
"Obedience is not."
Ross immediately spoke into his radio.
"Find Isabella."
No response.
Only static.
One of the agents checked another channel.
"Sir..."
"We can't find her."
Ross looked around.
"What do you mean?"
"She disappeared during the blackout."
Victor closed his eyes.
"She escaped."
Alexander nodded approvingly.
"Exactly as planned."
Meanwhile...
Ethan reached the first section of explosives.
His flashlight swept across the floor.
Metal cylinders rested beneath thin concrete panels.
Almost invisible.
Without the scanner...
He would never have known they were there.
He stepped exactly where the compass indicated.
One safe point.
Then another.
His breathing remained steady.
Halfway across the section...
A cracking sound echoed above him.
He froze.
The ceiling.
One of the old support beams had begun to split.
Dust drifted onto his shoulders.
The tunnel groaned.
Another crack.
Louder this time.
Ethan slowly looked up.
The beam bent under its own weight.
If it collapsed...
It wouldn't matter whether he avoided the explosives.
He'd be buried alive.
He forced himself forward.
One careful step.
Then another.
The beam continued creaking.
Back in the command center, Noah suddenly pointed toward one of the inactive monitors.
"Wait!"
The screen flickered.
A hidden security camera came online.
Not inside the tunnel.
Inside the hangar.
Emily and Grace were gone.
Their restraints lay empty on the floor.
Ross leaned closer.
"They escaped."
Victor wasn't convinced.
"No."
He pointed at the image.
A trail of blood stretched across the concrete.
Someone had been dragged.
The camera slowly rotated.
Automatically tracking movement.
Then it stopped.
Near the far corner of the hangar.
Emily stood with a pistol in her hand.
Grace stood behind her.
Facing them...
Six armed operatives.
Emily's shoulder bled heavily.
Her hands trembled.
But the gun never wavered.
One of the operatives stepped forward.
"Mrs. Winters."
"This doesn't have to end badly."
Emily smiled.
"It already did."
The operative lowered his rifle.
"Come with us."
"No."
"You don't have another option."
Emily answered quietly.
"I've been hearing that for six years."
Grace whispered,
"Mom..."
Emily never looked away from the men.
"When I say run..."
"You run."
Grace shook her head.
"I'm not leaving you."
Emily smiled sadly.
"I know."
The operative sighed.
"I was hoping to avoid this."
He slowly raised his weapon.
Emily fired first.
The shot echoed through the hangar.
One operative collapsed instantly.
The others scattered behind cover.
Gunfire erupted.
The camera shook violently.
Then the feed froze.
Static swallowed the image.
Ross slammed his fist against the console.
"Damn it!"
Victor looked toward the tunnel entrance.
"Ethan has to hurry."
Inside the crawlspace...
Ethan reached the final section.
Just as Emily had warned.
The safe markers ended.
Nothing matched the map anymore.
He remembered her words.
Not the floor...
The ceiling.
He aimed his flashlight upward.
Rusted maintenance rails stretched above him.
Some bolts had already pulled away from the concrete.
The metal looked ready to collapse.
He clipped Ross's rescue harness to the rail.
Tested his weight.
The rail groaned.
But it held.
Slowly...
He pulled himself upward.
His boots left the floor.
Dangling directly above the hidden explosives.
Every movement had to be controlled.
Every shift of weight mattered.
Halfway across...
A bolt snapped.
The sharp metallic crack echoed through the tunnel.
The rail lurched violently.
Ethan swung sideways.
His shoulder slammed into the concrete wall.
Pain shot through his arm.
The flashlight slipped from his hand.
It tumbled downward.
Striking the floor between two explosive charges.
The light spun wildly.
Casting frantic shadows across the tunnel.
Ethan held perfectly still.
One more broken bolt.
One more slip.
Everything would explode.
His breathing became shallow.
Then...
From somewhere ahead...
He heard a familiar voice.
Soft.
Weak.
"Ethan..."
Emily.
She was close.
Very close.
He looked toward the darkness beyond the tunnel.
A faint beam of light shone through a narrow opening.
And in that light...
He could just make out Emily's silhouette.
She wasn't alone.
Standing beside her...
With a pistol pressed against Grace's head...
Was Isabella.
She smiled coldly as Ethan stared at her from the tunnel.
May you like
Then she spoke the words that made his blood run cold.
"You should have stayed at the party."
